October 2011 Photo Challenge

The winner of September's contest was Starbase1 so he chose the next topic.

Topic For October

"Now that's big!"

Hopefully everyone lives near something either natural or man made which is of an unusually large size. Give us a photograph of it if you do!

Rules as they exist thus far:

Submissions are open from October 1st to October 31st and are limited to 2 per person.
Sky's the limit for resolution (though it's understandable if people don't want to share highest res originals if they don't want to)
Probably good to keep file size under 2MB
Photo-manipulation is okay (retouching, red eye, colour balance tweaks etc) (in this case a before and after would be required)
Obvious photo-shopping is discouraged (no adding stuff that isn't there at all, or using canned 'make pretty picture' presets)
Content-aware deletions/fill-ins are cheating...:p
Submitting photos which were submitted in previous challenges is discouraged. Use a new one!

Here's one of my entries for this month.

No, that's not the ocean. That is Lake Huron, second largest of the Great Lakes. This was taken in Kincardine, Ontario in 2010.

Now that's big! Not the biggest I've seen, but big.

This is a picture of a block of flats that are being demolished. 10 years ago I lived on the 17th floor and now there is a BIG hole where my kitchen used to be. :p

That's why your mother told you to make sure the gas on the stove is always OFF!

:)

I'll get that added to the list.

Quick one from me: a big, choppy sea, photographed a mere 24 hours ago.

Second one from me. This was a KLM plane that we rode in for a flight to Germany some years ago.

Hey I used to fly big parafoil kites!

Not on water though, I just got dragged on my arse across the wet grass in the local parks... Thats when I worked out there was a down side to using 200 Kg breaking strain kite lines...

Hopefully I am in time to get this in under the wire for submission deadline. It's still the 31th by my clock.

This is a Russian MI-26 helicopter that was used to move a drilling rig in northern British Columbia, very near to the Northwest Territories border. There was no road at the time, so a skidder, a dozer, and a bed truck were flown in to clear the area and support the move, and everything was brought in with this helicopter. The entire drilling rig, a 4,500 meter triple which was subsequently equipped with a Columbia walking beam system, was flown in with this helicopter and assembled on site.

One more big thing I saw while up in the great white north was wild buffalo. I've seen plenty of buffalo before on farms, confined behind big fences and clipped of their tasty wings, but none of them compare to the sheer size of the wild wood buffalo found way up north. I climbed onto the roof of my truck and used a 75-300mm lens to catch this one, and screamed and yelled and could barely get him to even look up from his foraging to get a good picture. He could really give a flying EFF about me or my truck or anything, for that matter.
