November 2011 Photo Challenge

The winner of October's contest was Starbase1 so he chose the next topic.

Topic For November

"Light against the dark / Dark against the light"

Rules as they exist thus far:

Submissions are open from November 1st to November 31st and are limited to 2 per person.
Sky's the limit for resolution (though it's understandable if people don't want to share highest res originals if they don't want to)
Probably good to keep file size under 2MB
Photo-manipulation is okay (retouching, red eye, colour balance tweaks etc) (in this case a before and after would be required)
Obvious photo-shopping is discouraged (no adding stuff that isn't there at all, or using canned 'make pretty picture' presets)
Content-aware deletions/fill-ins are cheating...:p
Submitting photos which were submitted in previous challenges is discouraged. Use a new one!

Not that it's really all that important, but that Blue bug is a cuckoo wasp.

They seem to congregate on my Teal Jeep in their season. Guess they are confused by it being the same metallic color as they are... :D

That's why it's called a cuckoo, right?

Here are a few photos I've taken since I got my camera. Nothing spectacular, but decent photos, in my own opinion :)

*EDIT* I've revised the post to include just the two that we're allowed to upload *EDIT*

I got this one on the way home on Friday! Very difficult to hold the camera steady by hand, but I think this just about works.

I did some 'levels' editing in PSE, to get the brightness right, but nothing very extreme

Nick

PS - Some exceptional entries in my view! Maybe time for one or two more?
:-)

Hopefully sneak two in here this month.
First is morning balloon flight, yarra valley, here in Melbourne, (Oz), at about 5am and climbing thru 800 meters to top at 2000mt.

Second, sunset just crossing from Minosota back into Wisconsin, on my Harley, after riding back from Sturgis. And with a very sore arse in the process ... from the seat...

just edited added a larger balloon, will try to rescan the biker image..

And with less than 4 hours to go local timer, here's one I took on the way home.

Handheld time exposure,no flash, (which is why the bus is blurred) of a London bus going over the central section of Tower Bridge.

Very nice handheld shot Nick! I can never hold the camera steady enough to get a good shot in the dark.

Well, I guess I had better get a couple of shots in here too!

The first shot was using a new tripod I picked up while in Las Vegas. It is taken from the top stair of a pedway over the intersection, so it was actually kinda hard to get this shot as people are constantly walking on the pedway and I could feel it moving.

The second shot was also taken in Vegas. I love the old theatre style entrance, and just as I was getting ready this beautiful young woman walked out. I tried to catch her profile, but couldn't get what I wanted. I asked her if I could get her to pose for a picture there, but she didn't want to have anything to do with me. :(

Yes, I'd say it's clearly the highest standard as well as greatest number of entries we've ever seen in this photo challenge...
