December 2011 Photo Challenge
The winner of October's contest was Reaperman so he chose the next topic.
Topic For December
"People and Portraits"
Rules as they exist thus far:
Submissions are open from December 1st to December 31st and are limited to 2 per person.
Sky's the limit for resolution (though it's understandable if people don't want to share highest res originals if they don't want to)
Probably good to keep file size under 2MB
Photo-manipulation is okay (retouching, red eye, colour balance tweaks etc) (in this case a before and after would be required)
Obvious photo-shopping is discouraged (no adding stuff that isn't there at all, or using canned 'make pretty picture' presets)
Content-aware deletions/fill-ins are cheating...:p
Submitting photos which were submitted in previous challenges is discouraged. Use a new one!

Do the portraits have to be people as well or can we have pet portraits?
Rigel
6th December 2011, 01:10 AM
As the topic says "People and Portraits" I'm going to say the portraits should be people.
However, if there happens to be a pet in there with the people . . . :)

Sorry, I can't find the original at the moment. But I suppose it was just more coloured. :D
I hope that's ok with the rules.
And yes, my girlfriend has a dark site. :D

Hmmm, colourizing is not one of the things allowed under Rule #4. But then, it is not specifically disallowed under Rule #5. I also did not write the rules originally so I'm not sure what that person's intent was, other than the image should be as close as what came out of the camera as possible.
But, in my opinion, adding colour to the cake has not significantly altered the image so I will allow it.
Nice girlfriend; I like a woman who's good with a knife!

The original intent with rule #4 and 5 as best as I can remember was to allow color balance and level tweaks, but discourage the use of canned photoshop presets or outright photoshopping.
I'd say selective desaturation is certainly fine, as it's the actual artist/photographer who is doing the coloration, as opposed to just pressing a "make cool" button.

Some cool entries this month. I'm really glad the photo challenge took off the way it did, starting up a monthly photo challenge on a CG oriented site wasn't a sure thing but it seems to have worked out quite well. :)

As the discussion has started...
I think the intent should be to show skill as a photographer. So yes, compositing in, or processing out of all recognition makes it a photoshop contest, not a photography contest.
I'd also suggest that a lot can be left to the voters - if people in general think something is over processed, it won't do well in the voting.
But , as always, the mods decision should be respected, its not easy to keep everyone happy! (Well, dam near impossible, truth be told!)
Reaperman

well for my $0.02 i think selective desaturation is fine, its a fairly common photo 'tweak' and often used to draw focus to an aspect of an image (lost count of the B&W London shots with a bright red Routemaster on sale in town)
i also think its a cool pic, but is the cake a lie :p ;)

I haven't had a lot of time for photography lately and I generally don't do much people photography but I am finding there is a biological imperative to force baby pictures on others after your kid is born. I do a good job resisting but I have no choice with this contest. The first photo is of our son at 4 hours old, sleeping next to mom. The second one is him at 2 weeks old.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. :) A friend recently had a baby and he is doing something neat. He is (trying) to put the baby in the same pose/position every month and snap an image. She's 18 months now and its really cool to advance through the 18 shots and watch the baby morph as as she grows. He plans to keep it up until she is 5 then do yearly.

Here is my second entry.
This was taken at the Weinachts Markt in Muenster, Germany just a couple of weeks ago.
For those who don't know Deutsch, Weinachts Markt means Christmas Market. These folks were lined up to buy crepes or waffles from this festive booth.

Down to the wire again, I'd better get my last-minute entry in!
Is it just me, or are the months moving faster? I wish time would slow down a bit!
Anyway, here are my entries for this month.
Entitled "Long Cold Trek" and "Poor Tired Angel"
oh and.... Happy New Year everyone!!
