View Full Version : Y-Wing Starfighter

30th Mar 2008, 01:51 AM
Thought I'd post some renders of the Y-Wing starfighter mesh I completed about 2 years ago for those who haven't seen it on other forums.

Modelled in 3DS Max 8, rendered with V-Ray Adv.

That looks really good! Very accurate too. Are you planning to release it or do any rendered space scenes using it? It'd be great to see either :D

Very nice detail on that. I think the dark grey dirt is a bit too heavy, but the texture work is nice. I love the patch of white paint that can be seen near the dome of the port side engine; nice touch.

I wonder how would a Star Wars ship look like when it's fresh from the assembly yard.

The same as this one... They only get pretteir over the years.

Very well done. I love the detail. The work horse of the republic. Slow and as nimble as a bantha. Really excellent modelling job.

I hadn't seen this and I'm glad you posted it. Very well done.

10th Apr 2008, 10:27 PM
Heck I missed this as well and wished I hadn't... I love the texture work you've done on this too :)

11th Apr 2008, 03:50 AM
orthos please!
great work!

11th Apr 2008, 05:32 PM
wow! I've seen a million SW models, but this one really stands out. Great work!

And FWIW I like the dark grey the way it is. It really feels used.

14th Apr 2008, 11:18 AM
Wow! that looks great! The only comment I have is that the "busy" half with all the nurnies is very monochromatic, it could do with some hue variation in all the dirty bits.

Nice mesh eh. Painting needs more work IMO though. Looks a lil' too generic at this point. Needs that extra added level of detail to compliment the excellent mesh construction. That's just my thoughts though.

:jawdrop:Awesome work!
The Y-Wing was always one of my favourite ships.
Especially when playing Rogue Squadron :)

excellent I was in love with that ship when Star Wars came out.

Excellent model!! Very detailed, very clean.

You know I once saw a version of the Y Wing straight off the construction yard in one of the tech manuals...too many panels. The entire body was covered in the same style of panneling on the nose. The story behind it was that the Y wing was so tempremental and required so much maintenance and jerry rigging that the engineers and mechanics just said to hell with it and took off all of the panels on the engine block. As a result, each and every Y Wing is unique because of how the engineers and mechanincs had to rig everything to work and because everything kept breaking down.

I can't speak for the Max version, but the LW version was released to a few folks in 2006 (or early 2007). I'm fairly sure I flipped it to one or two people around here. It was a while ago though.

Looks in Object folder....Nope wasn't me....

This is definitely the best Y-wing I have seen yet. Y-wings don't often get much attention compared to the X-wing. Nice work.

29th Apr 2008, 08:17 AM
great detail!

30th Apr 2008, 05:39 AM
This has to be the best Y Wing fighter model I have seen

By far my favorite Star Wars vehicle, and one of the best pieces of film design ever, for aesthetics and what the hardware implies about the conditions and philosophy of the Rebel forces. You did an amazing job with the modeling and texturing here. It really shines as one of the very best Y-wings I've seen.

12th May 2008, 12:55 AM
awsome texturing...

13th May 2008, 04:05 AM
movie ready. Very nice mesh and i love the textures...

Hi, really nice Y. FYI the base colour on the ILM models is a little warmer and less grey, and they're actually quite a bit cleaner and less beat-up than the X-wings, contrary to popular opinion (they also are just as fast - they keep up just fine in the Death Star fight). When I was a kid I thought they were the newer ships, and still do. Then again I thought Vader telling Luke he was his dad was an obvious ruse to get him off-balance, and that Obi-Wan was an honest and truthful sort of fellow.

I digress! The ship looks great and the modelling is outstandingly accurate. Good stuff.

Because this thread has been posted in I had another look at the images and I've noticed something - the 4 double prong things at the front of the two engines are the same parts that hold the Milennium Falcon's rear plates onto the ship. Interesting to see that the original builders used the same parts form whatever model and we've both modeled those separately from ref for each model.

29th Jun 2008, 10:37 PM

Yes, there was a much more limited selection of plastic kits available in 1975 and the ILM modellers used parts from many of the same kits on many different vehicles. For example, there are Saturn V rocket parts on almost all the ships! Also many panzer parts and 1/32 Phantom bits.

Awesome detailing and one of my fav designs from SW ,, always wished it featured more :)

Looks like a fair bit of work gone in to this model, love the details, perhaps a bit more grunge in the texturing would have made this even better, but thats just my personal taste / imagination: fantastic job ....well done ;)

Really nice strong sense of the scale on this one, great work!

17th Jul 2008, 03:56 PM
I love this. How detailed is the cockpit

29th Jul 2008, 09:29 PM
That's pretty sweet, I like the detail on the hull and canopy. One queston though, which mat files did you use for the hull to give it that dull metallic appearence?

OK, so the thread's a year old, and it's been resurrected... but damn! Who cares! She's one of my favorite ships from the SW universe, and you did a phenomenal job!

Great work! :tu:

22nd Mar 2009, 10:51 PM
In case people missed it when I posted in WIP, here's the resurfaced version. A big improvement over the original shaders I think.

Well done! I like the texturing.

Yes, the retexture looks good.
