View Full Version : Wings of War

21st April 2008, 10:27 AM
Its time to sound the klaxons and man the battle stations. If you hadn’t heard Lockheed Martin has decided to levy war on all artists depicting their aircraft or using the designations or names of the aircraft, see article (http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/04/liberate-b-24-liberator).
A lot of us are really ticked about it and the EFF has sent an open letter to Lockheed Martin. We decided to try and do something positive so the Wings of War contest was born. Granted a contest won’t stop Lockheed Martin from being ridiculously silly but perhaps we can draw attention to the situation and by doing so engage more artists and enthusiasts to get involved in the fight and in the process we can have a great time making designs and copy right those designs. I highly encourage all enthusiasts and artits to at least support EFF on this effort and feel free to use this contest as a point of intrest to draw attention to the cause.
The Contest
The premise of the contest it to come up with a company, a logo, a brief history of the company and then design an aircraft, helicopter, VTOL, bomber, transport or what ever you can imagine that would be used in the military land, sea or space based. The design can be drawn from past, present, future or imaginary technology so long as you can make it believable. Any material the entrant can provide in the WIP will help with the points awarded, such as drawings showing the process of finalizing designs, logos and etc. The more complete the WIP the more points will add up.
Voting
Rather than just a straight vote as we have done in the past we will do a combination of points award and voting.
15 points - Create Company and history
10 points – Create Company Logo
20 Points – Create a unique design for a military aircraft
Use believable concepts but need not conform to propeller or jet power. This could be a fighter, bomber, transport or other, pretty much anything that would fly.
20 Points - Build the model
20 Points - Texture the model or have it textured
15 Points - Present it via a still of at least 1600 res
20 Points - Present it in an animation
25 Points - For completion of project on time
Points available – 145
Points will be awarded based on how much of the criteria the artist completed. Each point will count as a vote and will be added to the total votes at the end of the voting. For example if an artist A completed all but the animation then 100 points would be added to his/her final vote. If the artist had done the animation then it would have been 120 points instead.
Prizes
The motivation for participating is going to be worthwhile.
The first place winner in the states will receive a $150.00 Visa gift card that can be used anywhere you choose. If you live outside the US then you will receive a cashier’s check for $150.00 dollars in US funds.
Second place will receive a $75.00 gift card on Amazon or if outside the US a $75.00 cashier’s check in US funds.
Third, fourth and fifth will receive a signed copy of the 3D World issue that highlighted Foundation 3D. Yes, I bought several copies to use as gifts. ;)
All artists will receive a info sheet on how to copyright their work in the US along with all relevant details, links and forms.
When
The contest starts on May 1st and will end on August 29th. All entries must be finalized and submitted on August 29th. Voting will take place the following week starting on Sept 4th and will last for two weeks ending on Sept 18th. Votes will be tallying and winners announced and notified On Sept 19th and all prizes will be delivered the same week.
Who
Anyone can participate including staff, members of other forums or groups however all WIP’s should be posted on Foundation 3D and all entrants must notify us that they are participating. WIP’s should be marked as Wings of War – WIP – (entrants name). You will find a Category for "F3D Contest Entry", use that one so we will be able to search them easily.
What
Any 3D package can be used to create the model and artists may use any applications at their disposal to create the textures, stills and animations and effects. For animations artist may also include sound if they choose but should not use copyrighted music or bytes.
Additional Perks and Possibilities
All work may be considered for Premiere Content at our discretion, meaning that you could have the opportunity to earn additional cash for your work up to an additional $350.00 (US funds).
Artists may also want to consider the possibility of a tutorial as they are building the model. A tutorial could be; designing a Military aircraft, building a design from your own drawings, texturing using a specific app or animating to effects. The rate card for tutorials is $25.00 a page, US Funds, not to exceed 14 pages. Larger tutorials should be outlined and the outline presented before hand. Tutorials should be delivered in word or text format with all images and support materials if applicable. For video tutorials the rate is $25.00 per fifteen finished minutes of video. In all cases F3D has the right to review and approve or refuse material.
And of course those models that either we or the artist does not want to arrange for Premiere content are free to be uploaded to the general resources. For Premiere content the author retains the right to show his/her work on their personal site and else where for the purpose of self promotion. In the case of Premiere content the author must state the item was created for Foundation 3D. If a model is not made available for Premiere content then of course no restrictions apply to the model.

To quote J.J. Jameson in the first Spiderman movie:
"I resent that! Slander is spoken. In print, it's libel." :)
In any case, parody is protected.
"Parody is a usage of a mark that pokes fun at the mark and does not confuse the public as to the source of the usage. In determining whether there is infringement the court balances the public interest in free expression against the public interest in avoiding consumer confusion. "A parody must convey two simultaneous--and contradictory messages; that it is the original, but also that it is not the original and is instead a parody. To the extent that it does only the former but not the latter, it is not only a poor parody but also vulnerable under trademark law, since the consumer will be confused." From Cliffs Notes, Inc. v. Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, 886 F. 2d 490 (2d Cir. 1989) "

Yeah but you ghave to remember, most of the cars in the UK get above 35/40 mpg, most of the cars in the US are lucky to get above 20 right now.
Right now in Fargo ND we're about $3.39 per gallon. The sooner they stop growing crops to make bio fuel the better, I know it supposed to be better for the environment but all the cost is being passed onto the consumer because the crops that they normally grow are in low quantity and high demand so prices go up which means the cost of transport goes up so fuel prices go up; its a vicious cycle.
Add to that all those damned V6 and V8 engines running around, give me a nice 4 cylinder any day.
I wish I could model a plane the way you guys can though, this sounds like a kick ass competition. I'm slowly learning but this is like going from jumping into the shallows to the high dive.

Ok , here we go
As it seems, several Mokheed Lartin's "Wunk Skorks" engineers have started their own company , called Asymmetric Aerospace. Their goal is to create a Fast AIRlifter that would:
a) easily carry a standard 40-foot container filled with up to 25 metric tons of hardware
b) take off from and land to extremely short airstrips, preferably vertical , but definately STOL (short takeoff and landing)
c) have a low radar cross-section and low emissions if possible
d) be as cheap as possible and use maximum percentage of Off-The-Shelf items in the design.
--- More on this in the Next Post --

I doubt with current tech it is possible. I once looked up a russian ZUBR hovercraft. And was amazed when it said in the characteristics that the huge machine that transports up to 3 main battle tanks with their crews , has 3 independent gattling AA guns and moves over water land , sand and snow with the speed of 60+ knots has fuel mileage of 85 GRAMMS of diesel fuel per 100KM...
Be sure, my amazement tuned down when I read in a smallest possible fineprint 3 magic words: "per horse power" :) LOL

The concept around the contest sounds really interesting.
I believe in myself as an artist rather than as a modeller to be able to describe, but I will try a dare.
In the past my self-created models are limited to smaller objects and a bit architecture, but let's see what happened to me this mind.
The limits are broad and time, we have enough..
One question:
Is a fictitious company, which builds space ships, allowed?

Yes, so long as they are of military benifit, they could be a cargo transport or troop carrier so there is plenty of lattitude.

nah... The field is wide open. Anyone can play inside their comfort zone or "extend your wings" :P a bit and try something new.
Personally ... I'm all about comfort :D
I second that , Bill :)
And I just remember that someone posted the intention to release the contest works as general public content on the forums ... do not remember who and where , but I am all up for that, obviously as long as copyrights are respected
P.S. and Raja , if you can get Bill Flemming's books on photorealism , you may find some good rules and techniques there. I read each of them more than once and each time it helps to pick new angles on modeling. I hope other people will say the same about them :)

Post everything in the same thread. That will make it easy for us to find it all and associate everything with the right person when the contest ends.

I know how you feel... Lost my laptop, had no money to even think of fixing it or replacing it, then a neighbor helped me out with a bunch of spar parts and 24 hours was up and running again...
I have a few extra parts, What do you need?

not entirely sure. It's between the PSU and the MOBO. I'm leaning towards the MOBO as all the indicator lights on the Nic and my optical mouse are on and the monitor hasn't switched to testmode which means there is some power coming from the PSU. I've had two of those die on me before so I'm sure of what happens. Mind you they've both died on this board so maybe the board had enough with the wonky voltage :D. Thanks for the offer though, it's nice to know people out there care :D.
I've got my lappy up and running for now. Not sure if 9.3 will run on it though. It's an older Toshiba sattelite.
As for the desktop I'm not too worried about fixing it right now. I'm looking to buy a Macbook Pro once I get back into the work force. I just quite my job at a cabinet shop after reading the MSDS sheets and discovering that most of the stuff I was working with was insane. One of the nicest chemicals in the mix was Xylene, which by itself can cause cancer. So sufficed to say I needed to go :D. So now it's just a matter of time until I'm back up with an income.
Once again Delta thanks for the offer.

lockheed martin and censorship (http://graeme.instablogs.com/entry/lockheed-martin-and-censorship/)
I put up a comment on this today, also, as it occurred to me that:
It makes you wonder - if you are wounded by ordnance/munitions/whatever and when you are (if you survive) treated in hospital - does the arms/ammunition/ordnance manufacturer own the copyright to the x-ray imagery of the shrapnel or physical relics left in your body ?
oh what a legal Pandora's box this opens up...

A member asked me to comment on the voting and how it will happen and I am just now getting the chance to post the details.
I’ve been very busy with other things, server moves, DNS hanged, registrar changes and a whole bunch of other stuff. One of those other things is having a new voting booth done. Our dev team is planning on having it ready for the culmination of this contest and it’s very cool. Written as a plugin to VB it will require members to choose 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and won’t accept a vote until all votes have been placed. It also attempts to negate ties (near impossible) but in the event we do have a tie then we will have a runoff between the them. Considering points are also handed out for animations or not among all the other criteria outlined and I really think we won’t need to worry about a tie.
As for handing out points for the other criteria that will be done by the admins, mods and a select group of Premiere and Contributing members so it should be pretty unbiased and even handed.
Half a month left and I see a lot of good work so I am really looking forward to the final subs and voting.
You’re WIP threads will be the submission threads, if you are finished or when you finish you should make a final post with all the items presented via images, animations and text and links, etc. and title the post and FINAL. We will know that you consider your work done. Those who did not quite finish will still be included in the voting but will obviously not get points for the extra considerations.

Time is getting close, I know many have not quite finished their work. Would it be advntagoues for me to extend the deadline or not? I have no problem with extedning the deadline but I'll leave it up to all of you who are participating. I could cheapen the expereince for some where are approaching completion just as much as it could help others. Still, I'll leave it up to you all to decide.

I wouldn't mind a bit of an extension... but I don't think its fair to those that managed to pull it off in time. How about a few bonus points for those that did it and post it as finished before the actual time is up.

I was planning on getting it done, but having found out Lightwave doesn't like my computer anymore and refuses to render my file due to low RAM (I know, go figure!), an extension would be awesome so I can figure out what the problem is and fix it, or at least find a workaround.

I say no extension. The contest was originally designed to allow for people not presenting the complete package i.e. points for drawings, points for modelling, points for texturing etc.
I for one expect to lose points on the company history and drawings as I did not put much effort into those parts. I plan on snagging points for completing an animation (the machine is working nights this week).
And frankly, I've run out of steam for this project. The three months has been enough; more than enough perhaps. I just want it over and move on.

I'm actually starting to lean this direction too, now. Managed to sort my technical problems out for the most part, and that was what was going to stop me getting it done.
Plus, 3 months is a LONG time to be working on one model for me... Gotta agree with Rigel on this one, especially since everything is back up and running.

As the vote would stand right now it would be:
3 for
2 against
I'll give this one more day. What I might do if I extend it is to allow extra points for finishing everything on time. That way those who are done on time can be done and now they are rewarded for that and those who needed a little extra can have it and perhaps make up for it by excellence.

I'd love to have a little extra time, but I don't honestly think I'll get it finished to the level I -want-, no matter how much time I've got.

Okay, not everyone weighed in but I think it's a good cross sample to make a decision and I want to make a decision today while there's time to communicate it.
I see both sides and I believe I have found a way to satisfy both sides.
I will extend the contest to end on August 29th, that is a Friday.
However, knowing that several of you are nearly done or will be done on time I am adding the following points for having scheduled and worked hard to achieve that goal.
25 Points - For completion of project on time
By doing this if you finished your project on time you will automatically get a 25 points boost. I still think a few of the projects that aren't quite that close could make it a real running even if they are done late but we'll have to see.
I think this should satisfy both sides as much I can.

LW9.5 gave me quite a scare last night, I lost the model , the file became corrupted for some reason and Modeler crashed, but took a step back and re-did it from the previous versions and from "save as transformed" within Layout. It was strange because though modeler was crashing up on the object, Layout loaded the scene and worked as if nothing happened.
So after 2 sleepless nights I made it just in time :) Hope you like what you see , folks :)

WIth that being the case and since this deadline, being an extension, doesn't count for extra points based on meeting a deadline I will continue to accept entries until midnight Sunday. Admin perogative? ;)
Come Tuesday I will start putting the voting booth together and tallying points. This was perhaps a bit too aggressive a contest right out of the box but I am impressed that nearly a third of you actually completed to the animation point. I will review all threads to determine how many of the others will make it to voting, I believe if they made it to final render phase they will be inclided since the animation was an extra points perk.
Thanks again to everyone for your participation, we've got a couple of ideas brewing for the next Ad LIbitum and Delta's Monthly Challenges will be starting soonish based on the disires outlined in the contest thread a while back.

If you have a completed entry in by the time I get back tomorrow, sometime in the afternoon I will accept it.
If you aren't able to finish an animation but have the model done otherwise, then submit it as a completed to that point.
In fact everyone who completed up to the texturing phase should submit their final entry. If you aren't sure how to do that, take a look at any of the completed entries.

All entries have been marked accordingly now and notated to the exact date they were completed. 40% of the group made it all the way to an animation. And from the looks of it another 10% may have made it to a final or close to a final render.
All those who entered will be in the voting booth and I will tally the points tomorrow I suspect and get the results up.

You were really so very close. A company, history, logo and 1600 res render would have put you in the finalists. ;)

Uhm, the guys who posted on the original deadline got 145?
Excuse me but you extended the deadline, so why do they still get like 25 more points...
Doesn't seem fair to me...

Because they finished by the original deadline. (25 point bonus for fulfilling the original contract.) Seems very fair.
Now it is up to the popular vote.
And as before, Good Luck to everyone!

It was because we extended the deadline. When we did it was a split as to whether we woud or not, obviously those who finished on time should get something additional for that. The second deadline was because we had to have a cutoff date biut no points were awarded for that. It's recorded in this thread and we asked for eveyone's input at the time. In fact I sent PM's to all entrants asking for their input but we only had a week to make the decision.
It was either that or we would have only had three finalists. ;)

I missed that... I choose to meet the extended one. Becuase I wasn't like 100% ready. ( Just like 99%).
Next time I should read this thread instead of scanning thru it :)
Good luck to everyone :)

Tis ok, we're finding that you practically have to push information in people's faces before they see it. ;)

SaHin, I think it would be easier if you read the first page of these contests, they all explain when they start and finish and what is involved in entering the contest.
