Greater than and Less than keys increase or decrease selection. If you want to select the object your polys or whatever are on you can just cycle that through with F8.

I'm not sure there is a 'select connected' tool in the strictest sense of the word, though one workaround is to select a poly, open the UV editor and go to Select/Select Shell, which highlights everything that poly is connected to. Might be what you're after?

In XSI there is a setting to "select island" Maybe something similar in Maya?

Select Polygon Island in XSI refers to non UV selection, select shell in Maya is probably UV-terminology. ;)
You've got a Select Island option as well, but then you select UV components, which aren't polygons/ vertices/edges/etc... in XSI. :p :crazy:
