View Full Version : Wings of War Vote

This contest represents the first time we have ever run a three month long contest and a compromise between popular opinion and actual merit. In the past I have always felt it was unfair for a vote to be driven be popularity alone since there is a tendency to overlook execution, poly efficiency, how well the artist adhered to the guidelines and etc. On the other hand a purely points based system takes the fun of a popular vote out of the equation, there’s nothing more fun than a good neck and neck race. So for this contest I’ve merged the two. The points will be added to the popular vote for the final outcome with each point counting as a vote.

The break down is as follows:

145 points equal a 1st place vote
120 points equal a 2nd place vote
80 - 60 points equal a 3rd place vote
55 - 20 points equal a 4th place vote

Before we start I want to give a huge thanks to all who started, whether you finish or not your willingness to participate helped make this a success and the shear volume of work and interest drew attention to the reason for the contest in the first place. And I would be remiss if I didn’t take a little time to point that out yet again.

While I personally support copyright and trademark protection I do not believe in overly aggressive zealousness to the point people would not be allowed to paint, model or represent real life items in their work. Such is the case of Lockheed Martin in demonizing modelers and artists depicting aircraft commissioned by the people of the United States of America for wartime protection.

What I am about to say is my opinion not a lawyers so please take it as such. Much can be said and argued regarding who owns what but the fact is that once the design has been sold to the government (that’s We the People) it belongs to us collectively. It is our tax money paying for the design work and as such it belongs to the public interest.

Even if you don’t subscribe to that notion it is never the less unthinkable that an artist may not represent those aircraft for public or private or for profit or not. With this contest it was our intent to draw attention to what we believe to be unscrupulous and unfair practices on the part of Lockheed Martin and encourage all members regardless of specific interest to engage their congressional leaders on this matter. For that purpose I am posting the contact links here.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2008/04/liberate-b-24-liberator) sent an open letter (http://www.eff.org/files/filenode/MacNeillLetter%20040908.pdf) to Lockheed Martin fighting back against this extreme view on copyright/trademark infringement.

Contact your congressional leaders (http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml) expressing your concern and the damage this aggressive stance will and is causing.

Part of the contest was to present all those who participated with a document outlining copyright/trademark and how to do that. True to my word I went and did my due diligence and present those documents here for everyone. A serendipity is that MattMan took the time to provide us with one for Australia and Bill has one for Canada as well. I was unable to find them but will add them as soon as I locate them.

Yup, Bill :)
Even folks who did not finish made a good effort in form and design, and just for that they deserve appreciation.

Me, for instance, in all the rush during the last week of the contest and technicalities here and there, I forgot to make a beauty-shot :)
But I will add it up AFTER the voting is over :)
It is all set up and ready to F9 :)

And, Bob, I think what needs to be done (in the next contests cause too late for here) is to make a score-based voting booth with scores for everyone, not just the first five places, because those of us who do not hit the first five, for various reasons, would still like to feel the heat of the race :).

After all the main point of any contest should be to make all of us better, not just for some of us to win the price ;) if you know what I mean.

I was wondering how the points standings and the popular vote will be murged to become the final standings? I agree that this was a hard one to nail down, Good Luck Everyone!

Its a real range of skills on display and the imagination from the original setup is clearly firing here! Great work everyone who took part.... Especially those who went seriously in to their company and the design work, not just the pretty renders....

Now, that's a curios response that I have to explore. Is that because you thought some were better than others or because you aren't familiar with the way the voting system works. Just curious.

No, just me voting differently.

Is there anyway in the future that the polls could be set up so you can see all the results, and not just the Top 5?

Unfortunately only the result for the number of selections. This poll is a truely weighted system. the information on how it works is here (http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2916). The quick description is that if first place is 2.0 then it had 2 percent of the population, the population begin those who have voted. And 1st is worth more than 2 which is worth more than 3 and etc. The more detailed explanation explains it in detail but its the same type of system used for voting.

Oh no! The only difference here is that we have the popular vote and the points vote, we had to convert points to a vote syste, to be applied at the end of the popular vote. All that hard work has to count for something and past expereince showed us that a popular vote didn't always reflect whether the item was really better or not.

hmm , it seems to me almost no voters are actually going to see the threads :) Because I have seen some amazing work that did not catch any votes? (and NO , I am not talking about mine LOL) I do not mention which ones because I do not want to sway the opinions at the last moment... but yes you probably know who you are ;)

I think it would be only fair to have us all rated and then pick up the top five rather than picking top five from the list ;) anybody seconds that?

I can't please everybody, unfortunately, this is the way we specified it would be from the beginning. But in essence you have the same choice, everyone's work is shown whether completed or not plus linked to thier thread and the best representation of the work.

Voting is voting, it boils down to who thinks what is best in thier own opinion. I've looked at the polls behind the scenes and everyone got some sort of vote, what I cannot tell you is who voted for what place. In other words I wouldn't know who you gave a 1st place vote to, only that you voted five times. This method absolutely cannot be tampered with, a complaint about the old polling system. This also forces you to place all you available votes for each place, another problem with the old system. You could skew the entire poll by casting only one vote rather than five. It's a much fairer and more accurate system and what I think you are really unhappy about is that we don't show everyone's percentages. or allow everyone to get a vote. In that case I would have to say, why even have a vote. If everyone gets ranked then mere 75 voters won't produce any definitive results.

That's my take on it anyway.

Seriously good entries, I'm amazed at what everyone managed to come up with.

Really sorry I wasn't able to keep up with this contest, various health problems keep getting in the way - for one thing, my eyes won't let me sit in front of a computer screen for too long any more. Hopefully this is only a short term problem 'cos I really miss my regular internet fix!

I’ve applied all the votes from the points score so the poll is now final and I want to officially congratulate the winners. All of the winners completed their projects as well so it’s great to be able to reward them for that.

BillS still took a solid 1st with Baroba following up with 2nd.

3rd, 4th and 5th go to CD2703, DELTA and Alp since I disqualified myself from prize competition which moved DELTA and Alp up the scale.

I also want to extend my thanks one more time to everyone who participated and I hope many of you will continue on with your designs and complete them.

I will be contacting the winners shortly to make arrangements for their prizes to be delivered.

Nice jobs all.

I have to admit that my first vote went to BAROBA. While the design isn't particularly out-there, looking as it does like a real existing plane design - which is a compliment really :p - the build and execution is absolutely top notch, with a few pretty successful composites thrown into the mix as well. First rate work, very impressive!
