View Full Version : Photon Torpedo Effect Templates

I've spent a fair amount of time studying the torpedo effects from Star Trek to get them just right and I though I'd share the fruits of my labor. I've re-created various types of torpedoes seen that should fulfill most massive antimatter-destruction needs.

Example of TMP style photon;

I wasn't really sure if I should/could upload this to the resources section, so included as an attachment is a .PSD file which contains 15 different photon torpedo samples.

Here also are the notes that accompany the torpedo templates;
INSTRUCTIONS:

Each torpedo layer is labeled with a number that corresponds to the film from which it came. So Photons 1A, 1B, & 1C are all based on the torpedoes from “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” while Quantums 8A, 8B, & 8C are from “Star Trek First Contact.”

Most of the torpedo's can be rotated and sized as desired with little addition, but the Quantum torpedoes featured very specific lens flare features, and should maintain their orientation. Lens reflections could/should be added as well once the quantum torpedo is placed properly in frame.

The photon torpedoes from Star Trek VI featured a beam of light that trailed its white core. This beam should follow the same vector as the path of the torpedo and should be given proper perspective in relation to the camera. I've included two samples that already contain the beam—these will probably work fine for most uses. I've also included an “empty” torpedo layer and a beam template in case you want to adjust it for yourself.

I would describe the photon effects included as very “clean,” don't be afraid to blur them and alter them to suit your needs and add a little reality.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

The photon effects were made using a Photoshop plug-in from Digital Anarchy called “Knoll Light Factory, ” which creates various lens flare and lighting effects. This software was actually derived from a program visual effects artist John Knoll wrote to create the photon torpedo effects in “Star Trek First Contact.”

Using footage from the films I created custom presets to try to generate each effect as closely as possible. With the output as a starting point the effects were added to and manipulated in various ways to try and accurately capture their respective looks. However, as much of the work was software generated I ask that you please NOT credit me if you use them in your art.

there are some cool after effects tutorials using trapcode shine that should work using particles. if i can find the tutorial, i'll post it here with the LW way of doing it.

Looking great! I really love the TMP torpedos, but Fed and Klingon. Fabio has a tutorial on his site that does something simular, but those torpedos look closer to WOK style.

How did I never see this before?

How many owners of Optical Flares are here? I could maybe whip up some presets for that program sometime.

all I could open was the instruction image.

That's what I got at first too. Open it in PS, then you'll see each torp is on a separate layer. Turn off the various layers to get the one you want.

Awesome share Prologic. Thank you very much. :)
