First off I'd like to say hello and that I'm a friend of Mikala from another forum.
Now my title makes it obvious that I'm a huge stargate fan and since Mikala pointed me here I felt it was right that I should share some of what I have been working on.
Now here are a few of my finished models. (kind of a build up to the wips ;) )
1352
From left to right based on the top image: USAF Excalibur, USAF Ares, USAF Deadalus, USAF Tempest.
In a way its funny since it also worked out that from largest to smallest is also my oldest to newest.
Here are a few more shots of my 2 newest finished ships.
1351
1363
Now onto the wips.
Since the upcoming new ship from Atlantis "the Phoenix" turned out to be another Daedalus class I started my own Daedalus refit.
1356
1357
And since my fleet is missing an Al'kesh equivalent for a mid range bomber. (I'm slowly working my way down to fighters :) )
1354
1355
Well I hope you all enjoyed my designs and I look forward to sharing more as time goes on.

By the way they're taking a long time to load, why not host the images here using the upload tool.

We figured out how to do inline images in your posts, upload the images using the uploader and then start typing, click the paperclip when you get to where you want to place the image and select the one you want.

First of all, RJB, welcome to Foundation3D. Any friend of Mikala's. . .
Secondly, while I am not a Stargate fan, I do appreciate good modelling. And that is a nice collection of models you have there!
Thirdly, at the start of a post, just give a quick blurb about which software you are using to create your work.
Enjoy your stay!

RJB,
I have seen your Excaliber on another site and as I said there, that is a damn fine ship. Your design looks like it should be in the Stargate universe and I wish they would ask you to use it. I would love to see it in action. You have also inspired my brother and I to make a micromachine size model of it. It is not highly detailed but it is good enough. Attached are some pics. Thanks you for the ship and the inspiration. Keep up the good work.

2) Well I'm glad you can enjoy the models from both the design and modeling stand point.
3) Sorry, I guess that comes from being new here.

I'm not sold on the red and blue glowing bits on the non-canon designs, partly because they aren't present anywhere on the canon ones and so don't fit the trend. I also don't see any valid reason for having red or blue glowy bits on a ship design line that pretends to be function over form.
Good modelling all around though, the Daedalus especially looks very nice. Time to put it in a scene and post that up :D

Time to put it in a scene and post that up file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/PEACEM%7E1/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/msohtmlclip1/01/clip_image001.gifWell the red came from a render of the Prometheus I saw when it was jumping to hyperspace and it's two small side pods where glowing red inside. Since then the idea stuck with me and finally I’m working my way out of it. The blue is to represent the integration of Asgard technology into the ships since the original designs are set a while after season 10 of SG1. Also I seem to have a strange fascination with things that glow blue. ;)
Thank you Meurig and I have some scenes done I’ll just have to get around to posting them. :)
I finally just started back on the Phoenix. Not to much done so far but I have started to add a neutrino ion generator as seen on Thor's Beliskner.

Yeah it's now time to start with the detailing. Another long journey awaits. :)

that really big model is impressive cant wait for season 4 of sga to hit the shelf
for sure now. also that big ship reminds me of a model i made along time ago
but sure not that amount of detail i gotta get this ware lightwave, too many bills right now

Hi RJB, I think the ships are great. I'd say at least studio quality and the custom ships are very much following style of the show. Any chance you could post the poly-count for each ship?

while I like these ships, I think that form must follow function, in otherwords, one should design the look and feel of the ship around its function, and not the other way around.
I just wish the lunk head vfx guys who did the F series of ships on the stargate shows would realize this. you dont need to over greeble something to have it look visually interesting.
the phrase KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) comes to mind.
and for the record, no this isnt directed at anyone affiliated with this site, but rather the vfx lunk heads in charge of designing ships for stargate sg-1 and atlantis.
(feel free to moderate this if need be, just speaking my mind.)

sorry about that, saw this post, and just had to say something, I did not intend to sound like a ticked off klingon, so to speak, was just trying to get my point across in as simple and straightforward a manner as I could possibly manage(and now, I realize, with all the subtlty of a rampaging rhino........).

Love it's lines though. It's not all that uncommon. There is a variation of the aurora that shows up in the show that is symmetrical as well as the Asuran cruiser.
those small vertical/oblique wings give to the ship an asgard touch...
great work so far!The little wings are based on the idea of the ones on the back of the aurora class ships but mine are in and not out which I think fits with the design better.

Awesome to see you back at it, too bad the boys at mgm didnt see your work and say "gawd theres 10 more seasons left in this modelers work alone!"
I find myself very disappointed that sga is over with when they started so many good stories in the 5th and final season.
BOT: How do you decide the detailing is enough- is there a certain flow of symmetry (which of course there is to your work) that you say one more object is too many or do you have to rework a section to to stay within a certain boundry you've set for yourself?
Or are you really building these at area 51 and just messing with us...?
Man this work is outstanding- suppose you could do some animations with these for us some time?

Man these are amazing? How long does it take on average and would you be willing to post some of these as resources?
As for SG, been a fan since the begining, even have the screener dvd( yay for ebay ). Sad they canceled SGA, but alteast they have universe coming down the pipe AND on top of that its a ship! A ship stuck far far away ( like voyager was, i give no props to their plot on this though ). Gives a good opportunity for many many more races, ships, etc... for us to drool over and recreate.

I just pick a starting point and work on it till I feel it looks right and this sets the flow for the rest of the ship.
Finished model.

Started on a few new models continuing on with my ancient theme.
Both ships are based around a stealth system that does not use the standard cloak. Instead I wanted to go with a holographic system that aims to blend in with the environment so taking on natural space objects as well as other ships to match in.
This one is an unmanned probe.

RJB, I've seen the Phoenix images running around the 'net for awhile now, and I have to say that I love the design -- in fact, it's heavily inspired my Earth ship on the stargate modelling project I'm working on right now. I'm also really enjoying the awesome modelling on your ancient ships -- it's good to get some variety in Ancient design. (honestly, how many times could they use the same meshes over and over and over again throughout SGA's run?)

nice work, hey, did you ever post fore, side, top, aft, and bottom shots of your ancient bomber design?
also, might I suggest a cargo or civilian variant of that bomber frame?
it's perfect for those two roles.

No it does not. It would dock with a station or outpost. The underground hanger bay I started on had a crawler it would land on and then be moved into the facility.

Cheers,
NickI got it easy since this station is a lot smaller than yours but the other one I have planned will be as big if not bigger. I have plans to make a space based Lantian civilization with a group of stations and a center space based city at it's heart.
How big is Horizon going to be?
nhall
23rd August 2009, 05:21 PM
Right now, Horizon's as big as she's going to get. I calculate her to be slightly smaller than Atlantis in pier-to-pier diameter.
Height: 6690 Ft (2039.112 meters)
Width: (Docking-arm to Docking-arm) 7706.16 Ft (2348.84 meters)
Length: (Docking-arm to Docking-arm) 7561.35 Ft (2304.69 meters)
And I've still got interiors and ships to do. O.O
I look forward to seeing what you've got in store for the rest of your project!

The main city (Avalon) Is going to be about 6-10 times the overall mass of Atlantis so it's going to be a massive city. This does not count the endless support structures that will make up the whole capital. (Space habitats, shipyards, foundries and so on,)

I started work on yet another gateworld modeling challenge. This time it is to make a ground base set in the stargate universe.
Yet again I`m following the ancient theme and will be building a ground base that would have been used for the Lantean race. Right now I have started on one of the hanger areas (this hanger will be used for larger ships that don't need a runway.) but the whole scene will have 5 or more different buildings from living areas, command base, turrets, runways and so on.
