I'll be uploading my old models to the resources this week and thought I'd make a thread about it as many of them will be updated.

I'm working on the Enterprise right now and I've remodeled about 25% of it, and cleaned up a lot of the rest of the mesh. She'll have all new textures as well as the old ones don't look that great to me anymore.

I always meant to do a scene with your TOS meshes! Glad to see you're doing this :)

Hi Prologic, glad you found your way here.

Your freighter is still being used in my Avalon to the Rescue animation; once I find time to get back to working on it that is.

I'm just glad to hear that Avalon to the Rescue is still in production. ;)

I saw your thread about that, I'll check it out later when I have some more time. I was asked if that particular ship could be used in the upcoming "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men," I cant wait for it to be released so I can see if my ship made the cut. :D

Hey Prologic Niner!

Glad to see you made it over to the new ship. Looking forward to your improvements! Based on how good your work was before, it should be great now.

Cheers,

That would be totally awesome; but hey, it is a nice model. Let us know if it makes it in.

I worked on a few things before finding something that kept my interest, but now I've finally got things going again.

I'm doing all the geometry in Modo this time, and I'm going to try and create a fully finished model in modo's format as well (in addition to a Lightwave model).

PEW PEW PEW!

what has happened to your version of the Refited Enterprise .. any progress ?

Loving that Akira. there's something about Modo's renderer that I really love. It makes everything feel so... creamy, I guess, on the defaults. There's something about it that yields these really soft-looking surfaces that I just really enjoy looking at. :D

Refit was coming along well but then I stopped working on her and I'll probably start her again from scratch. For the time being she just doesn't hold my interest. I want to do a nice Enterprise-D but I need some more practice with complex curves before I can tackle that I think. Even the curves on the Akira turned out a bit... wonky... in some spots.

I know I love to get my hand on a good Enterprise D .. But loosing interest in a model I can understand ..I have lost interest in BSG for a while ...... I have even started a k7 space stations for the fun of it.. :D

Coming a little further. There's a lot going on in these modern trek ships. I don't really like the hull plating over all their surfaces. There's also a ridiculous number of photon torpedo launchers on the Akiras. From researching the design I know that fictionally she's supposed to have 15 (already way too many), but there are close to 30 on the actual model.

prologic NICE clean details on the hull .. nifty looking ship ....

MattMan thanks for the link .. I have that one .. :) I like more detail around the rim and there is no 10 forward windows .. other than that is a great mesh.. (I wonder if they mind if I added the windows myself ??)

Nice shot. I'm not much into Trek but the Akira was always a favourite since among a legion of samey Fed designs it stood out a bit.

Question: Are you planning on stenciling the registry on the hull or will you make it a texture?

Prologic9
24th December 2007, 10:10 PM
I'll stencil the registries in. If anyone wants to change a registry (and everyone is welcome to) all you would have to do is put a texture on the saucer like you would normally do and copy that surface onto the registries surface. No biggie.

I'd much prefer "floating" registries so I could include multiples, but this is still broken as of LW 9.3.

Also I've started work on an Excelcior, Enterprise-E, and 3 non-trek models (top secret) as well. So which one I get around to finishing first is a bit up in the air atm.

Parenting should be ok as of 9.3.1.

Certainly the floating registry works for me here. Though you do have to float it a little more than the old one due to less tolerence by the new rendering engine for non planars.

True some work ok, some don't. I've had several occasions where, by the time I had moved the geometry far enough away that errors no longer occurred, it was obvious the polys were not "attached" and the illusion was ruined.

Here's another example of rendering issues caused by geometry proximity (Picture). I'm not familiar enough with the technical aspects of the rendering to say this is a related problem but in my mind it seems to be. I've outlined two render errors I get in lightwave. I'm running 9.3.1 and I get the errors using every camera.

The angular panels on the hull are separate floating pieces, and it is their overlapping on the "hull" that is resulting in the render errors. If I move the panels to another spot the errors will move with them and if I remove the panels the errors are gone. There isn't any actual geometry from the panels where the errors are occurring. All of the poly's in question are 4 point and planar. With this specific example I had modeled many more panels but ended up deleting them as it was the only way to get rid of all the errors.

I've run into numerous problems because of this. For my TOS Enterprise I originally modeled a fairly detailed shuttlebay and the corridors that sandwiched between it and the outer portions of the ship. In theory you could have taken the camera through one of the ships outer windows, into the corridor, through another door or window into the shuttlebay. Would have been cool, unfortunately I got errors all over the outside hull and had to hack and hack away at the shuttlebay to clean them up. And in this case there was no overlapping geometry, it was simply the proximity that caused it.

Like I said, it's far less tolerent of non-planar geometry than the old engine. I had a few issues with a couple of things so I ended up rendering out orthos which highlighted the problem areas and went back and fixed the geometry to make a little more palatable. The quick and dirty way is to select the degenerate geometry and make sure they're all tripled.

Hey Prologic Niner,

Hope you had a good holiday and hope you have a good new year.

Sorry to hear about all you problems. It is frustrating when the program won't do what it's supposed to do, isn't it? :yuck:

When did these problems start? With LW 9.0 or 9.1 or 9.2?

Just curious.

Nice stuff dude. I must say, I downloaded your TOS E and (aside from my own and al3d's) it is the cleanest Trek mesh I have looked over thus far. And nice job on the bussard efx.

Well done. ;)
