Hi all

New here, and looking to download a few tutorials on modeling (and specifically aircraft).

I'm a traditional oil on canvas artist but want to start using 3d models to help with the process, using Lightwave. I can see it having some huge benefits re overall composition, and the light and shadows within a scene.

Here's what I do

"On Final"

24" x 16" oil on canvas. A F9F Panther about to land on the USS Princeton during the Korean War

And the current WIP

This is 44" inches wide and I'm currently recreating the scene in LW to help plot the aircraft shadows. So far I've built a very simple airfield object including the runways, perimeter tracks, hangers and control tower. I'll post a render shot in a new WIP thread later.

Indeed welcome and that's darn fine canvas work.

Are you proficient with building models yet or do you plan on using models others have built?

Oh I really like the panther! Once you start modeling.. not to worry. There are loads of us here that model planes and can lend a hand.

Thanks all for the kind words

So far I've made a couple of boxes and slapped a basic UV map on them.

I've just started a WIP thread showing the relationship between the current painting and the 3d model I'm creating. I' don't think I'm going to find the time to learn to model to any standard so will mosr likely use 3rp party models but I do feel it's important I know the basics.

One more painting while we are here

Hi Pete!

Great to have you here! I'm actually just the opposite of you....I do aviation art, but from the computer as my skills with pencil/charcoal and paint have gotten very rusty!

Great work so far and as has been said, there's plenty of us here with answers (and many of us still with some questions!).

Hey thanks all for the kind words.

The A6 is available as a limited edition giclee print, with remarques as an option.

My favourite two so far.

Having some 3d references helps to get some good 2d drawings. Nice idea, having the right proportions in 2d to get a good image.

Cheers guys

I'm really pleased ( AND I MEAN REALLY PLEASED ) that the Panther painting "On Final" and the A6 piece "Into th Storm" have both been accepted into the Juried Art Exhibition being held at the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola this year.

The exhibition opens 6th May and runs through to April next year. Given this is the home of US Naval Aviation I'm really chuffed my pieces were considered good enough to make the cut.
