I did this with Lightwave 9.3.1 and Photoshop. Photoshop was used for a bit of blending and tv noise.

the ship looks out of scale to the rest of the scene
but over all not a bad start

I think the scale has to do with the depth perception, ie the basestar is actually higher up in the sky than it looks.

I think I'll take the Star back in behind the closer cloud bank to help out sizing issues.

It looks a wee bit out of scale with BC Place there... More like it should be casting a shadow on BC Place and most of the downtown if it were from that vantage point. Cool concept though.

I have to agree about the size, I would try and increase it or place some clouds underneath to show that it is higher in the sky.

Thanks people! To be honest it was 6 minutes work of an idea that popped into my head.
Most of the six minutes was setup and render time...tiny post time.
I'll try taking this to a better place over the weekend.

Geez, huh.. i'm relived... they came to Vancounver not to Szeged :) Oh my it's not a TV documentary? :) :)
Okay, i agree a bit with the size issues, but aside that .. great pic!

I'm not bothered about the size particularly, but I find there's too much bounce light on the underside of the base star, if you compare it to how dark the buildings at the bottom of the frame are.
Otherwise it's a very cool shot with a perfect angle for one of those 'Theyre here!' images. Coolio.

Nice image Mikala, this is a serious, poor Vancouver. . . . .
Agreed about the perception but that is an easy fix, I think the color balance looks good you blended into the scene really well . . nice comp.

Well I can't really take credit for the lighting as I used the background pic in Image world cranked up to 140 percent. I think the bounce is happening from the bright area in the sunny area nearer the midtop right of the city. I may try turning the pic in ImageWorld and see what comes out.

If it weren't for the clouds, you would have pulled off the illusion well. The cloud height makes people feel that the ship is bigger than how you wanted it to seem.

I wish something like this basestar would appear over my city, give the city a wake up call.
Matt
7th December 2007, 10:14 PM
Well the people in that shot don't seem at all bothered... someone should really wake up and take a look around them sometimes ;)

7th December 2007, 10:34 PM

Another way to ease the placement would be to use less detail or blur the detail a bit. It looks so close because the detail on the ship is so sharp...

Mikala
8th January 2008, 06:33 PM

Hey! We will have the largest film studios in the world here next summer. Not to mention a thing called Sunlight, the type that shines down from the clouds, not the one you do you dishes with.;)
Mikala
8th January 2008, 06:55 PM
We have that everyday...the studios I mean...:)

How can you see the sun through all that smog?

It makes me wonder more about the outcome of the quest for Earth in the new series. It would be so nice to find models from the ID4 movie also.
