Anyone who has ever tried to use the good (but rather complexly convoluted IMHO) renderer Mental Ray will know that while you can get some impressive results "out the box" to really get things looking tip top you need to dive in to the murky world of Mental Ray Nodes, usually with a huge reference book on your desk and a vague idea of exactly what you need to have as a final result.
With well over 100 nodes (with some mysterious names) Mental Ray can be daunting to mess with which is why Digital Tutors have released Mental Ray Nodes Online Library (http://www.digitaltutors.com/store/product.php?productid=3622).
Concentrating on Mental Ray for Maya (ideally 2008/2009 but it is applicable to all versions 7 and up) this online resource costs $89 for 12 months unlimited access.
Covering every single node with specific examples, downloadable demo files and a non linear format which allows you to view any video in any order, this online library is invaluable for anyone getting to grips with this renderer or experienced users wishing to work out what exactly a specific node does.
I've been using this resource for a week now and have to say I'm finding it very useful indeed.
