hey chaps, thought i would start off in the new site with a new mesh, befor i carry on with my battle platform, let things settle in, plus fresh site, fresh work,
well here is a start, its the ford transit, sport model, i drive the next model down every day at work, if you have not driven one, they are full of gadgets and car cumforts nowadays, i used to hate driving the old transit, but ford have started to learn at last!
i thought this would be an easy model, oh no but how wrong, that plastic bit that holds the wing mirror on took me hours to work out!

Looks good so far, but dude, at this stage, skip the shaded renders, AO is preferrable to be able to see tings clearly :)
Cheers!

Yeah GI and wires are much better for critiques and suggestions in this satage :). Good start.

I like what I see so far. Have to agree on the wires and all, unless of course you're like me and just can't wait to get it into layout for a quick look.

Great looking start rusty!
@ Gordon Robb - Building a car should be no different than building the airboat you did a while back - Awesome work on that by the way!

i do find that cars can have some complicated parts, and you have to think long and hard about your splines, well here is a clay with a little update on the doors, sorry its not a light dome, i just used an area light for ilumination

and a wire, is there an easy way to render a clay with the black lines? i like the way those renders look?

Yeh, but don't you need to use SubDs? Can't go them!
rusty, clays look good. Go into the properties tab, and select render lines.

im just using patches and rounding tool, i just make a panel, select all the polys, copy them, flip them, smooth shift, left click.press t and move the polys out 10mm or whatether thickness you want, paste, merge points, you can then use the outline and select ring to select all the points you need to round, no subds used, also and an inset or bandsaw near the rounded surface with surface set at 40 deg there are no smoothing errors,

10th December 2007, 03:11 AM
Ah cool rusty. I thought everyone used SubDs for this kind of thing.

10th December 2007, 10:05 AM
well after this i will make a little mini tut something like a car door, alot of people asked me how i made and rounded off my tripod, and this uses many of the same methods, i think you can cut down on a lot of polys this way and still get the round edges, just takes a little planing, and sometimes remodel of a panel or two, but as i put them together like you would a real car it means you dont have to start from scratch if you mess up the shape some where

Cool, I look forward to seeing this.

10th December 2007, 04:46 PM
another little update, front bumper started, and started twice due to crash from stray poly, thats the only problem with rounder, you have to be so carfull! plus i had to watch the new bourne flick as i didnt get a chance to see it in the cinema,

Looks like very nice upgrade :)
Are you not working wiht Subds or it's just low subDs level so there is some small segmentation on certuan areas ?
rustythe1
11th December 2007, 02:59 AM
no subd used at all, all spline and rounding, the head light holes need a little more, it could be also i have low a a, also the clay shows up more than the paint but feel free to point out any other areas befor i get too far in to improve the rounding, i will run off some with high a a when i get a chance
Lewis

I thought you aren't using subDs when you mentioned Rounder :) :).

I recently spent a month in the Ford St. Thomas Assembly Plant (swapping PC's for them) and the way you are building this reminds me of how the Crown Victoria's looked on the assembly line.

Nice to see someone not using SubD's for car modeling, too :)
For the amount of detail, that's pretty challenging. Nice work, I'll be watching this :)

sorry chaps, ive been trying to post some updates but everytime ive come here the site has been down for maint or somthing, anyway, dosent look like a huge update but i spent a long time getting the head lights right, examined mine close so i could get the reflectors just right, even modeled the light bulbs, so if you put a point light on the element of the bulb it should behave like the real thing,

Great update and hopefully all the DNS issues have been resolved. Just part of the territory moving to a new server and platform.

well here is another bit of an update, been a bit too full with turkey to sit at the desk for a while, i added some colour for these as the outside is nearly finished, time to start on interior and underside.

sorry for the lack of updates, i have been doing little bits here and there, but xmas gaming has taken a bit of a front seat, fortunatly my xbox packed up xmas and i only had my ps3, and as you know, release dates keep getting put off, should have been playing haze and unreal, but alas, they are delayed yet again! any way, a big part of the intirior now started, sorry for the poor quality, to poly count is creeping up with the details so radiosity and aa is set down low, eventually when i start adding colour and textures ill increase times, that will hopfully lose some of the segmentations

12th January 2008, 06:46 PM
thanks chaps, and still no subds, is a bit tricky getting everything to line up,but managed a fair bit today, will hope to have another update with the dash board complete tommorrow, or today looking at the time!, and i am modeling all the text and graphics inside, i know it takes more polys, but then you dont need any images, so less to send if you need to e mail or something, also less to keep track off, nothing like losing your images in another folder!

12th January 2008, 09:35 PM
The level of detail is amazing Rusty.
rustythe1
14th January 2008, 02:38 PM
well it took a bit longer than i thought, i modled all the text and details on this, but just the very top section of the dash to go, then the rest of the interior should be easy

dont really know, i do drive one every day,and it would be one that not many people would do,if i did an evo or skyline or anything else along those lines there would be loads of others out there for people to compare to, also wanted something different to do while the new site settled in

thanks bm, not had a chance to post in a little while, but now finished the dash and messed with some of the textures, ive also included a quick fly around the inside so you can better see how the dash comes together, its 36mb in the xvid avi codec

22nd January 2008, 04:49 PM
sorry, havin a bit of a prob compressing it down so its small enough to upload, so give me a little time and i should have it up there, should have checked size first!
rustythe1
23rd January 2008, 01:29 PM
managed to compress at last, and still keep most of the quality of the original, still in xvid

Thanks! That was a great tour.
The gap on the rear doors is rather wide? Or is it partially open?
rustythe1
23rd January 2008, 01:41 PM
ive not put in the rubber bits or internal parts for the doors appart from the front, so there is a gap at the mo, the rear is unfinished and only a few parts of the underside are there, i will gradually fill in the holes!
