View Full Version : And so it begins ...

This project was begun on the old site and promised to be a long one. So far it's held to that promise. My (crazy) idea was to construct a 'set' depicting the discovery of another Ancient construction bay hidden away from the Ori et al beneath an ocean on an obcure planet and containing another Aurora-like ship (in this case The Lady in Red). It also has a smattering of my personal Antaran universe here and there.
This area has laid - undiscovered - for thousands of years but somehow an advanced SGI/SGA team has stumbled upon it.
The set is to be part original and part kit-bash using appropriate bits (with credit) obtained from other artists. It's as much a 'here's how I depcted that' as a W.I.P.
All work is done using LW 7.5d and PaintShop Pro. Any resemblance to anything existing - real or imaginary - is purely dumb luck.
The first thing to note is that this is a huge set/project as can be seen by the sizing boxes and the LiR in-situ:

Additionally there will have to be some pipes and stuff for nut-cases like myself and others:

The first order of the day - aside from laying out the floor and wall sizes and positions - was the partially tiled end wall. The textures - as seen in the close-up - obviously need work. The 3rd picture should help to visualize the scale.

Here's one of the first level doorway area. The Cargo bay Door is a freebie that should be available on Stefan Morrell's (Stonemason) site: http://stefan-morrell.com/index.htm. (http://stefan-morrell.com/index.htm)
His work is outstanding and was part of what inspired me to go nutters,

WOW Elowan that is some awesome work, love the details. Only suggestion I have, is to maybe make the hanger bay a bit wider, in order to add to the grand scale apperance. Love the use of major cache in one of the renders, it look real cool. Stonemason has some awesome stuff. Look forward to seeing some more.

I think making the floor a bit wider is probably a good idea. Maybe eliminate the right-hand wall to make it easier to do scenes as well.

LOL! Know the feeling, that can really be a royal PITA! Why not use procedurals on the walls? That way the texture would look random & more realistic rather than trying to mess with a texture you're trying to get tiled properly. If you're interested, I have a few concrete & metal procedural textures I can send you. Let me know.

Well as to that - I'll try it. They are tiles though not concrete so ...
I haven't got that much experience with Procedurals to date either.

Hey Elowan, this is much advanced from the last time I saw it.
Nice work as always.

Was able to produce a nice texture with what no-mad11 sent me. However - how do I add mortar lines? I would hate to have to model all the tiles.
I tried an alpha map for the mortar lines without success.
I shall soldier on but could use a few suggestions.
THnx

Nice work as always.
Thnx but please remember that not all the objects you see are my originals. Some are by Stonemason - namely his Cargo Bay Door. Of course Picasso used real people as models but ... :point:

Play with the procedural texture called Grid. You can set the spacing between the lines as well as the thickness I believe. Put one on your diffuse or colour channel and the identical settings on bump to give them some depth.

True enough. But you are taking those bits and pieces and arranging them in an esthetic and pleasing manner to create an entirely new whole. Therefore, it is still your work. ;)

I'd do exactly what Rigel suggested, that's how you'll be able to get the mortar lines you're looking for.

The texturing procedurals are also in those channels so do I put the 'grid' above or below the others?

You can sometimes do it either way depending on how you decide they are going to affect the other layers...additive ,multiply what have you.
Glad to see you are still on this.

OK! Here's how it turned out. I've attached an archive with the preset I used and in appreciation and in keeping with the season go here: http://www.savefile.com/files/1260048
and double click on DLed pps file. I learned a lot as well. Have to move the tiles down a bit.

That, sir, is called "brain getting ahead of fingers" syndrome. It happens to high speed touch typists as getting older causes the fingers to slow down, but hasn't quite had the same effect on the brain.
It is supposed to say looks GOOD! Good dammit, not Elowan! :)

Advanced technology in an advanced culture gives a precision of vector computation unseen in 21st century human technology, meaning, you can insert a large object into a small cavity without hitting anything. Or, because this is a construction dock, get said large object out without hitting things.
As long as you keep the booze and cheap drugs away from your helmsman. :)

Another view of one area. The floor bump map needs to be toned down. As to floor width - I may widen it a bit but remember that this is supposed to be a construction faciity bored into solid rock beneath an ocean. The finished ship would be moved out on a trolley.

If you're using an image for the bump, you might try an actual photo of dried up dirt.. creates a very believable effect
