Like a noob I leapt before I looked. I ordered an 8gb kingston SD card to replace the 256mb one my camera has had for ages as I'm going abroad in a month and want to be able to take more than 180 photos at a time.

I didn't know about SDHC or the compatability problems. Since there aren't plain SD alternatives of equivalent size and since I've read online about some cameras' problems with SDHC being overcome with firmware upgrades, does anybody know if it's possible for my Canon Ixus i5 to have a firmware upgrade to support SDHC memory cards and if yes, how I might go about doing it?

Thanks in advance.

I've had issues with support of 8gig SD cards in a couple of devices now. I've always had to resort to using a smaller capacity card.

I did a quick pretty good search and found no hacks that supported the bigger memory cards. However, I had a similar issue with my 1DS MkII supporting 4 gig cards at the time. To get around it I formatted the cards on my Win XP machine and then loaded them in the camera. They worked fine that way. The catch is I cannot reformat the card using the camera or it will spit a dummy. I Have to delete the images off the card using my windows commander once I've transfered them. This might work for you as well provided Canon hasn't found the loop hole.

I've found a netbook superb for checking over photos while travelling, I always copy up images from the cameras to it's hard disk, and to a USB attached hard drive too...

Which is not really whatyou were asking about, but anyway...
