Welcome to the
SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER IDEA CHALLENGE
Well with the first challenge out of the way, we wanted to say that you all showed just how varied a simple IDEA can be, and that even though everyone was competing, they had no problems showing their progress or asking questions about how to do a particular task. That is what makes this group what it is to me, a family from all walks of life and backgrounds that strives to be better at what we do and help everyone else along the way... Bravo people, Bravo.
(Wipes a tear from eyes and roles up speech...)
This month we wanted to kick it up a notch. The link below is the "IDEA" that everyone will draw from...
The IDEA this month has a very wide scope to it depending on how far you would like to go...
As an aide to you, all the Foundation3D model resources that you have access to, will be at your disposal as long as you give all the proper credits...
Just to be clear, not all of the IDEA has to be used.
When you Download the IDEA, you will understand just how big of an arena it will open for you.
Stills and animations welcome.
Minimum Resolutions
Stills 1024x768
Animations 800 x 600
codecs: DivX or Quicktime please
Enjoy!

When you say 'September & October,' do you mean that we have until 31OCT09 to finish? Or is it a two-phase event? Voting on 30SEP09 and 31OCT09?
Oh, and just BTW ... utterly badass selection of music. Who is it by? (And if you say 'Holst' I'll probably have to steal someone's pointy stick and go to work on you with it.) I wasn't planning on playing this month - I've got some projects of my own that I really need to work on - but this is just so brilliant that I may have to play in spite of my better judgement. Damn you both.

I must be utterly dense or really out there but I don't get the "idea" out of the music (and I cannot agree that it was good music)
It's a ... somewhat avant-garde cover of Gustav Holst's 'Mars: Bringer of War' from 'The Planets, Op. 32.' I (a) like classical music (among other types), and (b) like listening to cover songs - it's always interesting to me to see what take someone else has on the same track. If I wasn't already familiar with 'The Planets,' I probably wouldn't have liked this, though - it wouldn't have made sense to me.
If you want to hear some other versions (including more traditional classical renditions) here's a bunch of them from Youtube. (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mars+bringer+of+war&search_type=&aq=0&oq=mars+b)
The original version is very theatrical and dramatic. It could almost have been written for a science fiction movie. It's obvious that it was a major influence on John Williams and his work for the Star Wars movies. A lot of the music from Star Wars has themes that are ... I'm not going to say blatantly, (but it's not far off) drawn from it.
DELTA

The original was by Holst. Performance (http://Performance) Mars: The Bringer of War! The version I chose for the Challenge is an adaptation by Isao Tomita in 1976. IMHO it is a very powerful piece of music that when I was growing up brought visions of aliens and spaceships into my head... I hope it can spark some of those ideas into yours...
Now all you have to do is sit down at the computer and create that vision!

I am not stupid, I am extremely familiar with The Planets by Holst, and that was one of, if not the worst interpretation I've ever heard. However it does not answer my question of what is the "idea": that is attempting to be conveyed.
Well then, my most humble and contrite apologies.

I don't think anyone was implying that you were. The idea is what ever this music brings to your mind. I could have just as easily picked Pink Floyd or something from Fiddler on the roof... Again as a boy this was just a good as a good sci-fi novel..

I'm sort of debating between two ideas. Three, actually.
One of them is an animation ... a lot of work, more for the animation itself than the modeling or rigging, and maybe beyond my ability (or at least my time constraints), but would be REALLY freakin' cool for a show reel if it came out well.
The second of them is a spaceship design that I've had floating around in my head for a couple years now, and haven't ever gotten around to building. An animation of that would be pretty cool too - cannon firing, VLS hatches popping and launching waves of missiles ...
The third one - and this is one that might be a little questionable, vis-a-vis the rules - involves the tank that I've been building off and on for the past few years. I got modo because of some rigging and animation capabilities that I saw specifically for a tank, and I wanted to re-build the thing from scratch anyway ... but I don't know that I want to do it -just- yet, or on a time constraint.
Hm. Decisions, decisions.

Hate to be all contradictory, but the first minute or two isn't Mars. It's Jupiter. Then it segues to Mars.
You might recognise it as it's the same tune holst later turned into "I vow to thee my country"....

It's a novel way of stimulating ideas for a comp. (Especially as it's such a visual medium that we work in.) I think it'll fire our collective brain cells in different ways then just giving a title. Kudos for suggesting it.

As a Trombone player I enjoy all kinds of music (Jazz is my favorite) I understand the talent and dedication it takes to produce the power of Mars: The Bringer of war... The Tomita version is more in line for what I wanted for this challenge. The light almost music box like beginning, than the musical roller coaster ride to the end...
I saw a commander sitting in his ready room listening to a music box from his daughter when the alerts go out... The captain talks-sings to his first officer and probes get sent out, fleets mass at some location to wait for conformation... The probes send back their data then all hells cut loose... That is just one of the visions I see when I hear Tomita's rendition of this work...

Hey, no disrespect for the music choice. I don't like it, but it does it's job. Can I just confirm, that an entry that is an animation, of whatever length is ok, or does it have to use some of this music?

If you want to hear how influential this music has been, check out "The Battle" from the Gladiator soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgARus5JFQY), or Mythodea by Vangelis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Tg0PaWaNM)
The question I need to ask myself is... can I turn an animation around in 2 months?
Maybe a tight deadline is just the tonic I need
I'm also curious about the animation music. Does it need to use Mars?

I think the idea here is to just listen to the music, let it suggest some images in your mind (not necessarily of planets either) then go with that. An animation with a piece of the music is certainly acceptable, but not a requirement I should think. The music is just the inspiration.

Time crunches are a fact of life, I focus better with them sometimes.... None of the music needs to be in any of the work, it is just the inspiration.. ;)

Just listened to the music now and while the music itself didn't really inspire me, there are plenty of ideas there. As well as the other suggestions mentioned, just looking at the title for the music there's Mars the planet, Mars the Roman god and "Bringer of War" alone could be an idea by iteself. You could even go with the composer as well if you prefer another version of the track or even another piece of music by him.
I did think there wasn't much i could come up with from a piece of music but after thinking for just a few minutes, there's quite a few oppertunities.

I don't think the tytle is intended as the IDEA but the music itself. The arrange is odd and quite sniffing the happy powder early on but this screams Flash Gordon 80s style. (durr wonder why ) The base arrange has been used a lot for the stereotypical spaceship fly by as well. Mostly in non American productions.
I really like the idea of this where the subject isn't written in stone, nothing to lock you in but still themed. Last contest "lighthouse" many first thoughts I bet were of ships and ocean shores with stormy seas and the typical lighthouse.
Anyhow i will try to do more than a quick speedpaint in SAI, unfortunately sept~oct is me packing up and throwing out 3/4s of everything I own to move down to calif.
Good luck to everyone and I cannot wait to see all the threads on this!
