“If the Death Star was blown up by the Genesis device”

This challenge will be interesting; it should cover a few areas of whatever program you’re using.

The first part of the challenge is to cover or recreate the original vector graphic path through the Death Star as seen from the original Star Wars.

The second part of a challenge is to pull away from the original vector graphics to reveal a fully polygonal or sub patch version of the Death Star.

Part three of this challenge is to show an explosion in the area of the heat ducts to start the genesis wave shown in Star Trek II “The Wrath of Kahn. This wave will envelop the Death Star and produce a life sustaining small planet or moon.

For kicks, you could blow up the small moon with lots of pyrotechnics and shock waves like they used when they blew up Praxis or the enhanced version of the original Star Wars.

Rules:
Try to keep your camera motions so that you have the feel of the original movies.

Part one should be your original work for this challenge.

Parts 2 and 3 in this challenge, models from the resource area or from your library.

Final entries must have all three parts of this challenge compiled into one animation and must fit withing the upload limits of the forum.

You will have until December 31st at midnight server time to finish your animations.

Animation should be at least 800 by 600. Final entries will be posted here.

Works in progress should be posted in the WIP part of the forums.

Have fun, and be creative.:)

I'll start the ball rolling. This is just the first few seconds to check out the feasibility...

It took half an hour to make the model, animate it and render. Each frame took a whopping 1.9 seconds even with photoreal blur and 5x filtering. I think we have 1977 beat. I thnk the death star should be a breeze, but I haven't a clue how to do the genesis wave yet, that'll take a bit of practice. I'll post any further updates in a new thread in the WIP section.

Thinking of having a go at this challenge myself...

Here's my first test for the start of the wireframe sequence.

Youtube Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtVyrCB-IYM).

The points are a little bit too flickery at the moment but I'm sure I can get over that.

I also have no clue how I'm going to tackle the Genesis wave effect, should be fun to solve that problem.

but what if you want to update the entire vector graphic path to match the 2nd movie :P yes it gets me artoo can display full holograms and he's obviously 20+ years old and yet the rebels use ... point lights

Maybe it's just a format issue, he records like a TV camera (in 3D) and the Death Star plans are in their universe's version of Autocad?

Tony, your Death Star looks better than mine, I need to alter my model to include some of the missing lines when i make the rest of the model for the animation. I made the point polygons 2 pixels instead of one in my animation to help stop the flicker issue. I also included motion blur to better match the look of the film when the animation moves.

Both clips looked pretty damn good to me. I can't wait to see how this pans out.

Thanks mate, and the two pixel tip worked nicely...

Oh dear, now I feel really bad... this kind of fell by the wayside when I lost the plot the other week.

I would like to finish this project even though it looks like the competition has died a death, I've got some free time now since I lost my job again so I'll start working on it again tomorrow.

Pity really, I really liked the idea of seeing how others would tackle this.

Would love to see what you have come up. :)

Seems like with all everything going on people put this on the back burner. :(
