Hello everyone. I having been showing off my project at various boards and I know a few people who are members at them, so I appologize if you find this thread repititious; I am simply trying to show my stuff to as many people as possible. :) On with the stuff...
Project Cosmos is a sci-fi universe I am creating. It's a bit of a hobby right while the trademarks and copyrights are pending. I have a future intent to market it once enough content is completed.
Here is the first prototype poster of my galaxy that the universe exists. There will be 6 in total, each map charting 1/6 of the galaxy. I am currently working on the second poster.

I am also creating illustrated companion books that will detail the spacefaring races of the universe in greater detail, such as culture, biology, etc. This is a teaser crop of the cover of the first book that will detail the first 3 races from my universe.

More updates to come. I hope you will enjoy seeing bits and pieces of the universe as I create them :)

Okay here are some concepts for my universe as a collectable card game. I'm not actually making a CCG these are just proof of concepts. :)

Here is a concept of a species that will be on the second poster. I've been fiddling with different details of the head. I'll have to work out in what manner it connects to the rest of the body but for now here it is...

Could you describe a little bit of your workflow to get that "look" in your concept pics?
Is it traditional then scanned or straight in through a Wacom?
Tovette
25th December 2007, 07:02 PM
I do my concepts completely digital. I sketch the drawing through a tablet and then do a gray scale rendering to feel out the forms. Once I get a feel for the grayscale concept I move ahead and make a color rendering; making decisions on what colors I want to use for the race.

Thanks everyone.
Mikala- I would be happy to give a tut on my methods of painting. I can say that I'm rather chaotic in my methods as I sort of 'flail' around undtil I find the look I want. I do a lot of stuff by instinct- similar to a cook who creates fabulous meals just inherently knowing what to put and how much. I suppose it's because I am self taught and never learned the 'motions' that one does in art school. I can break down the 'steps' I take but the actual execution of the rendering is sometimes different depending on the piece. :) I hope that makes sense.
Mikala
26th December 2007, 12:31 AM
It makes perfect sense as that is how I do most of what I am able to do. The technical side does not make sense. I just do what I need to to get things done.

Here is a concept of one of the Human warhips. It is being modelled in 3D as well. Perhaps at some point I will post the wips of that. For now here is the grayscale concept art.

I am actually going to begin color studies for this ship as it will make an appearance on the cover of the first companion book I am working on. There will probably be posts of those as well later on.
Tovette
30th December 2007, 05:38 PM
I've started doing some color passes of the Belkuri ships as they are going to make an appearance on the book cover. My idea is to give the capital ships decals and logos/markings that would be similar on fighter craft to represent their squadron. Obviously the cap ships won't be in 'squadrons' but their battle groups will have the appropriate markings. For example, the cap ship i've attached would have the markings of 'The Morning Star Battle Group'.
http://www.foundation3d.com/uploads/studio/2007/12/1017-30-61471_tn.jpg (http://www.foundation3d.com/uploads/studio/2007/12/1017-30-61471.jpg)
So, I'll play with some more ideas but this is basically the way I think I'll go.

I decided to try making the blue darker to perhaps fit it in with the darkness of space. I think this looks pretty neat. I'll add some secondary colors to it, perhaps dark greys to sections of the ship as accents.

I've already started a model of it. This link (http://www.projectcosmos.net/Fleet_Formation_Pass01.mov) is to a very gratuitous animatic of an unfinished model of the ship...

All of the 2D artwork and most of the 3D is mine. One of the 3D ships that isnt completed yet was built by a friend of mine but outside of that 99% of the project is me. Hope that answers your queston. I have been working on this project for about 14 months.

About the colour on the Belkuri ship: I personally think the darker blue obscures the shape and detail of the ship too much. Now, speaking as someone who served in the military, I can tell you that obscuring the shape of your vehicle is a good thing. But, in an entertainment setting, viewers get uncomfortable with things that approach a silhouette look I think.
I like the animatic; very nicely done and the music suits it.

No he's no in 3D yet. The characters probably won't be in 3D for sometime as it's not a priority at the moment.

In the end the goal of this project will be an illustrated companion book to the large maps (which I showed a photo of the first one in my first post in the thread). As for a card game and RPG, that is a definite possibility but not a goal right now. I am working with a professional writer to create some canon literature for some of the characters that live in this universe.
I'm hoping to get the first poster on sale soon and there will also be a website for this universe whose purpose will to create a 'suspension of reality' for the view so that the content they see will be done as if they are living in this scifi reality.

Yes I agree about the color of the ship. In conceptual design it can sometimes be tricky satisfying the entertainment constraints against the constraints of reality. Harmonizing them to gether can be challenging at times. I want to use primarily cool colors for the Belkuri ships because I like the violet engine glow and a cool color would compliment that. Plus I have color ideas for other ships of differe races in mind and I don't want them to conflict too much.
I think I will try to add a little more vibrancy to the darker version but I definitely don't want to go as bright as the first- that was a bit too garish; but you have to push too the extremes at times in order to find a nice place to settle in the end. :)
Things have been developing slowly, of which I have no excuse as I have been on holiday from work over the past couple of weeks and new Xbox 360 games have been taking me hostage :p I'll have some more updates soon though :)

Those appendages are for gathering nutrition from the air. The atmosphere these people evolved in is dense with spores and microbes that are protein and mineral rich in which the 'gills' catch them in the air and absorb the sustinance.

This is the uniform of the Belkuri Star Navy. It doesn't have any pins or rank insignias yet, but I thought I would post the final rendering of the uniform. This will be going on the companion book. I have many other uniforms rendered just like this that I will be painting but this one is the teaser. To see the rest you'll have to buy the book when it comes out... but I'll shuttup now. Enjoy the art :)

Okay, so I just spent 14 hours on this thing. I was inspired by a friend from another 3D forum who painted an awesome planet and he was kind enough to give me the full resolution image so that I could make something neat with it.

Nice painting; I look forward to seeing the completed poster.
I also like the way his weapons are holstered. As an ex-soldier, I kind of wish our web belt had allowed for that. Of course, on our belts, those positions were occupied by magazine pouches, one on each side, and an emergency field bandage high up on the left side.

Here is a near final sketch of the Belkuri spacefighter uniform. I figured since it has been a while since I posted something, and painting this thing has been taking a while (to the fault of Eve, WoW, sleep, girls, and the military channel). Anywho, I am hoping this thing will be finished by the weekend. It is for the book and there will be extra bits of art supplied with the finished rendering of the suit that I will not show- this is a teaser after all. Hope this tides you over.

I'm hoping that I finish this SOB before the week is over- I'm actually getting pretty sick of him as I have other things I want to paint- like their fighter craft- but I won't allow myself to start those until this is completed.

I've started on Conceptual orthographics for the Sprykon warships. I've started on the dreadnaughts since the first cap ship of the Belkuri was a cap ship as well. This vessel is around 4,051 feet long.
As you can see it's just a wip and I've barely started on it. The design philosophy behind the Sprykon is that their ships are inspired from Roman and Greek triremes. Sprykon combat idiology is based around kinetic melee combat (KMC as the Belkuri Military Intelligence Bureau classifies it). This fancy wordage basically means Sprykons enjoy ramming their ships into the hulls of their enemy whereby they sever the target ship in half, or hit it just hard enough to rupture the hull and board the ship through reinforced hatchways in the bow.
If you notice the fundimental hull design of the Sprykon ships you'll see the that ramming 'nose' of the ship lines up precisely with the drive pilings, providing excellent stability and maximum damage to the target ship.
Belkuri War Colleges emphasize the importance of maintaining distance when in combat with Sprykon ships as a close in fight will turn the advantage to their favor.
I'll shut up now and let you look at the pic

I've got the windows in which really give life and scale to this baby. I've also started on the first pass of large scale paneling- not really paneling perse, but more of an establishment of pattern that the small actual panels will have. That little light greay spec is my smuggler ship to scale with the dreadnaught. The nook on the belly of the beast is one of it's docking bays which appearantly can quite easily fit the smuggler ship!!

Okay here is the finished version. I added a close up of the subtle paneling but I dunno if you'll see it. Anywho this is as finished as I'll get on it. The long rod-like objects I'll do a close up of to better render them out, so as they are now is just suggestion.
Anywho, I have to do other views of the ship and I may render them in a different manner than I have here; a bit more quick and dirty than this.
@Starbase 1: I don't have a render any larger than that. Hope that's big enough for ya.

Hey everybody! I've gone back to my aliens and decided that a few of them needed some 're-doing' as I was a bit lazy creatively the first go around and never completely satisfied with them.
One race specifically were these guys- the bugs. I was never thrilled with these guys. I mean c'mon the original was basically an ant head on a pseudo-insectoid body. If this were the 1950's that head would be perfect, but no it's not the 50's so I'm going to actually put some effort into this guy and make a truly alien bug. :)
Yeah so right now I'm just playing with ideas but I'm liking the general direction and I like the outline of this dude's noggin. It's looking sufficiently alien bug now.

So the bio lumenscent was too good an idea to pass up. I gave these guys glowy jelly fish type bodyparts. My idea is that their 'brain' is composed of bio-lumenescent material and the glowing parts of the head is actually the light being immited by their brain. The jelly-like parts on the top of the head are sensory organs and also help radiate heat produced by the brain deep inside the skull.
Their spongy tongue is what they smell and ingest nutrients with. It's transluscent just like the 'head matter' and you can see all the juicy veins and stuff inside :p
These guys are sort of a pseudo-insect species now. They have both an exo and endoskeleton as the exoskeleton only covers certain portions of their body. So here it is...
Almost done with him/it lol.

Okay here's the finished alien.
I decided to change the glow from lavender to green as I think the green helps it look more alieny. Also added in a fungy-silk type growth on their back. I'm not sure if it's part of their biology or maybe some kind of separate life form that it shares a symbiotic relationship with.
Anywho, I'm gonna load of the galaxy poster and replace the old version with this guy.:D
Next alien I will revisit are the Dalnoth, the avian race.
I was never totally sold on these dudes. I like where it's going but I think I could push it some more.

Okay, here is the new Avian race that is going to replace the blue chicken men as I call them now :p
I like these guys way, way more. And the backstory I've given their people really fits with this look now, so I'm happy. :)
Next up to paint this guy up!

I'm now re-imagining another race that I have. Originally, these guys looked human. That didn't fit with the revised lore I now have for them so a re-paint is necessary.
These guys are the Calchekan- a spiritual race of people who control a good chunk of the Alpha sector. They share a border with the xenophobic Cheldrak (the bug guys), the Belkuri (the human looking people), the Aerusians (gas bag race who live in a gas giant), and the Taurbeshi (dark blue dudes with gangsta koala ears).
The Calchekan actually have a rather entangled history with the Belkuri as they had first contact with them which eventually resulted in what is now known as 'The Sovereign War'. Needless to say Belkuri and Calchekan relations are rather neutral/cold at the moment.

I've been paintin' him up quite a bit and getting close to something that I'm liking, but still a few tweaks are needed...
I need to add a complimentary color to his skin tone. I like the warms but I want something that will make it look a little bit better. I was thinking of some green but not sure yet. I guess we'll see when the next post comes lol.

Okay new update!
I've tweaked his palette a lot and added some more color to help with the 'mass' of the head and make it a bit more solid. I also started playing with the cloak, adding folds and whatnot. He's almost done I think; just a tad more stuff to do and I'll call him done. :)

The side arm on the Marine isn't really a functioning weapons. It's a retired weapon used in the Sovereign War and the ammo for has long since been abandoned. The weapon is more for protocol than utility really.

Here is the Flag officer uniforms. The style is fundamentally the same except this variant has a bit more 'flare' included on it. The blue chevrons on the boots and garrison cap represent the level of flag officer. One chevron is the lowest, 4 is the highest.
I'll do the other branches of military and government soon. After that I'll start on conscript uniforms which is the equivilent of enlisted.

Ok so for fun I decided to paint one of my characters in the uniform instead of having the photo of my friend that I used earlier.
This guy is Dane Larsson. He's the CAG of a fighter wing aboard the Carrier Equinox. He's a Captain and transitioned to active duty from being an Instructor at the Star Navy Academy.
Anywho, I'll add his rank and pins and things so everyone can finally see what a fully dressed uniform looks like. :)
Oh yeah, and I'll finally render out some actual hands and replace the fuzzy photo ref. :p

Here are the Conscript uniforms. Personnel who are fresh from training are issued this type of uniform. I didn't post the version with the jacket removed because it's the same as the officer.
Next up is formal dress uniforms. They might be pretty different from the standard I've got going but I'll have to play around them. I think I'm also going to do Cadet uniforms- issued to conscripts who are in training and not yet graduated.

Here is an unfinished version of the new portrait I'm making for the Belkuri leader. The old version was some younger woman who didn't look the part of a national leader, so I chose to create someone older. Plus, I had to update the uniforms as well as the first version had an older layout of uniform.
It's not completely done yet. I still have to touch up some areas and then paint in the rank pins and all that stuff. :)
Stay tuned for more uniforms!

Okay, I've taken a little break on uniforms to design some more Belkuri warships. This is a smaller vessel than the dreadnaught I designed a while back. This ship is designed for defensive roles wthin fleets. They have two massive shield generators that can either project a planar shield in a linear direction in any axis or they cane emit a spherical shield but with considerably weaker defense. Large groups of these ships are assigned to battle groups for defense and usually positioned on the perimeter of the fleet.

I love the design on this, great stuff. I racked my brain trying to find something I could make comment on but you've covered it really well. I think the only thing I could possibly add is that a few more panels or panels lines might help to add to the sense of scale. Smooth finishes don't convey that very well though the big guns help with that. I guess I found something after all.

For this it's maybe 3 layers. One main layer that has the majority of the work on it and two 'work' layers where I add details that are experimental and I haven't decided whether or not I want to keep them. Once I do I merge it down to the main layer.

Very nice work though.
I made the numbers big for aesthetic reason and also that personnel in other ships could quickly discern which ship is which. The number of guns it has can be determined on the side view although there are a few more on the side view that cannont be seen. This ship's operation profile is primarily for defence. The large arrays on the top and bottom generate massive shield barriers that defend the fleet from bombardment.
Also, this isn't not the true color scheme of the ship- it's simply a black and white rendering. The true color scheme is actually dark blue with colored accents.

I like the large numbers I think it looks good, I hadn't thought of doing that with any of the ships I've ever built.

Now I'm embarrassed, I thought these where the ships colors. Guess it's because I assumed that this was the a color rendering. Silly me.
Still in my own defense, I think those colors give it a menacing feeling, makes it look like it means business. ;)

I started painting my new alien. It's coming along... I may not finish the whole body right now, but complete the top half for the new galaxy poster I'm doing and perhaps for a card.
Anywho this is how it stands right now...

Here's another update... almost done for my purposes. I probably won't paint the rest of this guy until it's necessary because I have other things I want to work on for Cosmos.
I raised the levels to make the alien easier to see. :)

I've decided to remake the Calchekan homeworld on my poster. It was the first one I made and since I've remade New Haven in 3D, this world was starting to look way dated. Sooo here's the in progress version of the 8k color map I'm making for the new and improved version of the planet.:)

This planet will be rendered in 3D, but since it's an 8k texture painting is taking a while lol.
Yeah, at some point the alien guy will be completely painted. I stopped at where I was because for right now, all I require for a poster is that much of him rendered; the rest I cropped out.

Would either of you guys be willing to do a tutorial on the matter for Foundation 3D? I come across one ages ago that used a map of Mars and showed some tricks to 'terraform' it but I haven't seen anything like that in a while.

Beautiful artwork, but I am unsure where you are taking this.
It has the feel of a attempt at marketing merchandise for a film that was never made. That sounds like a criticsm, but I am not sure it is.
I invest similar amounts time and effort into many similar projects, and my excuse is that I am 'fleshing out' worlds for use in later role playing scenarios. Perhaps it is myself that is strange for needing to justify the time I spend on such projects, rather than accepting that I am doing them just for the fun of creation. I would be interested in hearing other peoples opinions on this.

Well, if Tovette thinks it looks cool, that's great... :)
It never fails to surprise me though - if you were to model a car for example, and had the scale of the wheels out by 50 percent, it would be treated as a gross error. But somehow if it's an astronomical subject then people just stick the word 'alien' in front, and anything goes.
No planets have fuzzy limbs that strong, even the ones that are 100% gas. And that's a factor of the way gases behave in an atmosphere - piling more atmosphere on, of any composition would not change that, density would still fall according to a scale height.
Like I said, if people think it looks cool, no problem. But it's not realistic, and calling it 'alien' won't change that.

My take on this is that we have not seen everything that's out there yet. So who knows what is out there to see and go "Holy crap!" about :)
Tovette
22nd February 2009, 09:10 PM
One of my reasons for adding more than the usual atmosphere is that when I look at actual photos of Earth from orbit, the picture looks fake. It looks like there's hardly any atmosphere at all and the planet looks flat. The reason I had a heavy amount of falloff on the atmosphere is because it helps make the planet look more solid.
Every time I mess around and give it a 'realistic' atmosphere the planet looks retarded, even more so that what I have now; it just looks bogus.

Who's to say that I'm not going anywhere with this? I didn't make the two websites and make all this art for my health. :p yes, it's a hobby right now, but in the near future I plan on selling this universe. I already have the Project Cosmos name pending trademark and I'm working on an online store to sell the pieces of the universe. :)
My motivation for this is to try an reinvigorate the scifi community. As late we have not had anything on a grand scale like Star Wars and Star Trek; which are 32 and 41 years old. That's old. There hasn't been a franchise on the scale of those two in a quarter of a century. Sure you have smaller franchises, like Stargate, Firefly, and the new Battlestar Galactica, but they aren't anywhere near the scale of the two 'greats' Star Wars and Star Trek. My goal is to create a Star Wars/Trek of the 21st century; give some new and refreshing to the fans of Science Fiction by creating a vast, deep universe that's full of mysteries, complex characters, and deep lore.
So stay posted, there's more to come. :)

I am glad you didn't take my posting the wrong way, I knew when I sent it, that it was contentious, ( one of the down sides of having to send 6 posts before you can download material, it tends to turn off the internal censors). I don't think you will ever get the same sort of franchise as the 2 Stars, simply because you now have so many smaller francises, one of which will will ' ring your bell' better than any of the others. Also fantasy takes away some of the market. Previously if you were an SF fan you had Star Wars or Star Trek, that was it.... period... if you didn't like it, then go write your own mega blockbuster! Now you have much more choice, I suspect if you add all the smaller franchises together, then you would swamp Star Wars/Star Trek several times over. But this is getting away from the point, I like what you have done so far, and hope to see more later. Best of luck.

So I'm starting a new planet. This is the Dalnoth colony world of Pirawk. It is the last planet they control- a left over of their once massive empire.
This is the base that I'll use to mask out the continents from the oceans. From here, I'll begin painting in tones that will represent the palette that I'm gonna use for the planet.
The reason it looks like swiss cheese is because the planet is recovering from a massive orbital bombardment compliments of the Sprykon during the fall of the Dalnoth Combine three centuries ago.

Here's a cropped version of the planet that I've been working on today. I painted out a foundation for the climates and then started adding photographic plates above- erasing out or painting over depending on what's needed. In the end it's a mix of my foundation, the photo ref, and the painting on top that makes up the final product. I haven't added craters yet as that will be the last thing I do for the land masses. I also have to paint in shore line and river run off.

The April update for Project Cosmos (http://www.projectcosmos.net) is now online.
You may have to clear your history for it to update the flash cache because the site for some reason isn't downloading the newest flash files. You'll know if you have the latest feed if the first article in the news section is an alert. Sorry for the extra work. I'm working on that issue now.
If anyone knows why flash is doing that I'd love to be informed. It'd save me an assload of time. :\
