I know this is a really basic question, but how the heck do you delete surfaces from the surface editor. I've been using LW since version 8 and I still can't figure that out :wtf:

You don't, In essence everything is given a surface, even if you do not name it LW names it for you (Default). To kill the surfacing you did on something you select the surface in modeler Hit the "W" key and click on the surface name. This will select those polygons that make up that surface. Give it a different surface name or rename it back to default and save the object. close it and reload it and your previous surface settings are gone. Or you can just reset everything to the standard gray in surface editor.

Yep. As long as there are no polys assigned that surface name, then it won't show up the next time you load in the model.

:D
I've been using it since Amiga Toaster 3.0 and it's always been that way! ;)
It will retain the surface name and settings for the session even if there are no poly's assigned to it. Once you save and exit the name and settings are flushed if they have no poly's to be asigned to.

Thanks everyone!
Hmm, seems an odd feature (or lack thereof). You'd think you could just hit a "delete" surface button in the editor. Oh well.

There has been a couple times where it came in handy but it would be nice if there was a "flush unused" button just to clean up.

I'm sure I saw a plugin on flay for flushing them out, but personally, I find it a feature with some merit.
Cheers!

Yeah, I agree... I find it a feature and always have. I look at it like you would a register in a CPU. A place to hold a value you might use later.

Too risky, A delete button could clear the palette and screw up the whole function of the replace by part functionality where the textures values remain as a constant. As it stands it's not an issue, All unassigned surfaces are purged on any fresh re load.. Are you coming from a different App to LW Bells? If so it may seem strange the way textures are held and listed through the hub and into layout and modeller on a per session basis. It's not a fault it's a feature. and one that is truly invaluable to efficient workflow on occasion.

XSI handles it the same way pretty much. All materials stay active unless you tell it to flush out unused ones. But even then its tucked away in a menu so you have to look for it and can't hit it by accident.

**Surfaces are deleted permanently, and this action cannot be undone. Also geometry undo buffer is cleared due to the way it works, therefore use it wisely!**
Eeeek! :jawdrop:
Too scary for me to use... ;)

Jorjo,
Thanks for the explanation. No, I'm not coming from a different app. I've always used LW. I just thought it would be nice to be able to clean up the surface editor with the touch of a button. But, apparently, I just don't understand the full workflow of the Surface Editor, i.e., what is the "replace by part" functionality you mentioned?
mattc,
Thanks for the link. I may check it out.
JackN,
I appreciate the warning. Good to know.
