First new pic in a long time...
Background is a photo I found online, with the aircraft built in LightWave 8, with the textures created in Photoshop.
I used 4 lights in the scene; Two Area lights for the main lightsource: one for Diffuse and one for Specular. Sky light is a massive area light, with a spotlight underneath the aircraft used as a fill light.
I added a Skydome to create the reflections on the metallic surfaces. One render and 30 mins later & off to Photoshop, where I painted in the contrails and added a few highlights & details.
3 sizes, so take your pick.:)

The uber spec of he wing pods is off-putting, though it may well be correct for all I know, otherwise a pretty good render there Mister!

Cheers!

They really were that shiny Craig. The tanks were made of steel that was heavily polished, whereas the Lightning fuselage was polished aluminium and wasn't as reflective. In the 70's the RAF ended up painting the tanks to get rid of the glare from the sun.

I had noticed that and I figured in this case Jason knew what it was supposed to look like but I am glad some one brought it up because I was curious as to why they would have been that way. ;)

I believe there was also some problems of them heating up as from the sun as well. I seem to recall someone saying they painted them for this as well. Good image though!!
I have a port wingtip bulb lying around here somewhere from a lightning that got de-commed and is now lying in a dump on the side of the M1. Managed to 'scavenge' it a while back! Always quite fond of the EE Lightning. Good job!

I suppose that having jet fuel boiling can be a bit embarrasing as well as a bit lethal!;)
Good find on the Lighning nav light though!:)

Looks great. Very nice to see an aircraft like this which is not very often given the 3D treatment. I was thinking of having a stab at one a while ago but never really got around to it. Good work :)

I have a bit of a vested interest in the Lightning as my grandfather helped build them after was de-mobbed from the RAF in 1947.He was re-training as a draftsman at English Electric & needed a job to pay the bills until he was qualified, so he ended up on the shop floor at EE on Strand Road in Preston.
Give it a go; you'll not regret it. The lightning is a fairly easy aircraft to build, but make sure you get damned good references!

Andromeda: That is exactly the sort of feel I wanted. At the moment I am building a Handley-Page Victor as well as an Avro Vulcan, so expect a lot more Cold War jets to turn up in the future!:)

Hi jason, funny you should mention the vulcan, I first came to know it when i was a kid
and watched james bond thunderball for the first time which has a vulcan in it. a book i
bought just before xmas, the encyclopedia of Military Jets by thomas newdick has 4
pages on the vulcan I was reading 2 nights back. ;)

which version of the victor did you have in mind? right now I'm looking at the B.Mk 2R quoted as being the ultimate victor. had the avro blue steel missile

good work look forward to seeing more.

cheers.

Long long long time ago I had this model in a Revel kit, I kept thinking the tanks were on the wrong side of the wing.
Excellent render

Oh sweet. <sneeky nudge>Maybe you should open up a wip thread or two for the vulcan and victor</sneeky nudge> ;) I see they finally got the real XH558 off the ground at last. I was a little disappointed they didnt make Fairford last year but hopefully I get to see it on the airshow circuit this year.
