EPIC ENCOUNTER

Have you ever built a model only to find at the end of its creation theres no future for it in your projects? If you're not an animator you may have taken the great model you have created and simply rendered a few shots. Then moved on to the next one and forgotten about it. If that's the case then this is for you. It's time to showcase that model of yours as it should be seen.

Welcome to the Epic Encounter thread. I'd just like to point out this will not be a contest. It is more of a joint effort to create a project together and have something exciting to show at the end of all your hard work. I say work, it's more fun really! It's building a spaceship and watching it go into battle and hopefully blast away your friends design

We do ask that the models are:

A) Your own

B) original

We don't intend to have Star Trek taking on Star Wars and then having to deal with BSG and finally Space 1999 :-) We'd like to present something no-one has seen before.

We intend to create an epic battle cinematic taking place over a vast battlefield in space and across several bases and moons. Two sides fighting it out in a blaze of visual effects, energetic sound design and a top musical score all provided by us. We will also write out a story and record voice actors for the pilots. All you need to do is build a spaceship.
If spaceships aren't your thing then there's plenty of other things you can build. Our mission is to create the battlegrounds for this "encounter". So a base, a gun turret, a hanger bay etc. Anything you think might fit in.

If you're suffering from creative block or can't get motivated to build something then why not try this.

Any design you want, any quality you can reach and let us do the rest. at the end of a six month period we will gather up whats been sent and begin making the movie. We will be adding to this as we go so don't worry if you are late to the party.

There will be no specific hero or any details about the story leaked. We don't want to make this a favourites project where the most detailed model or the most popular persons submission lasts longer. Everyone will be in the same league and anything can happen. We intend to show off the models as much as we can so don't worry if your ship is destroyed early on, it will have it's screen time.

Anyway. work in your own time and when you think its ready just send it. Theres no judging of talent, we just want what you can submit. Post WIP's as you go and lets all help each other to make this as cool as it can be as a community.

When you submit the model please include a small text document specifying what kind of ship it is (Fighter, cargo, destroyer, scout, etc) and whether it is an enemy ship or friendly.

Who knows you could be creating the hero or main villain of a short film. Have fun.

Submissions are to be uploaded to this link:

Epic Encounter Submissions (http://www.foundation3d.com/index.php?categoryid=38&p13_sectionid=435)

Thorsun-Escelce and F3D will be the only ones with access to the submissions.

Today:
Any objects you think might fit the setting will be great. This is meant as a community based project so we want to include as many members as possible. The story we will be creating for this will incorperate anything we recieve.

Andrew March:
This isnt a highest quality only project. Anything submitted will be included one way or another. No judgement at all on skills.

Bills:
We will be using Primarily Lighwave for this project. But we can work with .3ds and .obj

Tangster:
Great to hear:)

So we're sure it will be space stuff though then?

As time permits I'll make an attempt to do a few models I've been thinking about...

Sounds interesting. I'll bookmark this thread, and check back as often as possible.

BillS did bring up a valid point...what format should everything be submitted in? I'm pretty fluent in DAZ Studio (with Poser elements), and I'm getting pretty good at iClone4.

Another valid point - what genre are we going to concentrate on? Sci-Fi, Steampunk, Old West, Contemporary Early America, etc.?

Meurig

Nice idea!

Time is an issue for me at the moment, but I've had a design scribbled on my mousemat for a couple of months now that really needs to be built...

JackN
This maybe the first of a few themed projects for the community. This time it's a space battle simply because we looked over the thread and a lot of people seem to be interested in sci-fi. So we wanted a popular genre that people can play with some interesting designs. Next time it could be something fantasy, real life etc based. Also it doesnt just need to be objects based in space. We plan to include some bases and other areas.

Kb7rky
The format was addressed earlier. We are using Lightwave for this project. Which can use obj, 3ds formats as well as its own.

With regards to style etc, we fully understand that everyone here has their own visions of what a spaceship could look like and we want this to be that chance to build an object they really want to see animated. Because of that we havent limited this to a specific style. Just create anything you want. Our story will have mixed races and planets involved which will explain the different looks.

Meurig
Great to hear you'll take part too

Wow. Although I'm a total noob in modelling I finally have something to do in my free time.
Just one question:
Where shall I put my WIPs? In the WIP section with the prefix [EPIC Encounter]?

Same here: I have two ships I'd like to build from drawings and a photo of someone else's drawing. With the recent aquisition of a 46 Meg PDF file that shows the blueprints of a WWII German Sub (Thank you Karras!), I am going to start from scratch and build a new one.

I've needed something to kick me in the butt and get back into Lightwave, which I really haven't touched in ages.

I must admit I'm very unclear on how this will work in practice...

Do we get to play with the resources as they are uploaded?
If part done ones go up, can we take them and tweak?
Can the various resources be used for other stuff too?
Can other F3D resources be used for this?
Is the whole thing going to be a Blender style open source project?
Is the end result going to be creative commons licenced, sold, or what?
It does sound cool though.

•Do we get to play with the resources as they are uploaded?
I'm not sure how this will be set up, whether its a folder to put things into only or not. But we'd like to present the finished film at the end of this to everyone. So having the resources available to everyone could lead to people just making their own movies with only their favourite ships. The version we intend to make will showcase everyones work.

•If part done ones go up, can we take them and tweak?
Again I'm not sure if you can replace objects but if Bob can set this up theres no harm in this. We can just replace the objects easy enough. Also we will be waiting til the end to get the files anyway so theres plenty of time.

•Can the various resources be used for other stuff too?
Once the film is finished we can obviously just leave the objects in there to be shared around.

•Can other F3D resources be used for this?
We'd like to showcase something people havent seen yet. This was designed to show peoples latest work and give people a reason to make something. I think just sending objects that have been done already defeats the object a bit. We can gather up objects online easy enough.

•Is the whole thing going to be a Blender style open source project?
No idea what this means if honest, but it will be something we can add to over time. We don't want to tie people down to a specific deadline because we dont want this to seem like work. No pressure at all, just have fun in your own time.

•Is the end result going to be creative commons licenced, sold, or what?
I really don't know what Bob plans to do with the final result, but this wasnt designed as a profitable project on our part. Just a fun project for the community and gives us all something to work on together. As JackN said, an F3D showreel but with a story.

Thanks for the responses - by the 'Blender' style project I was thinking of the projects they have done to produce open source short films, where all the assetts etc are also published.

I got the bit about using existing resources, though I was thinking it might be, for example, a bit of a waste if the project needed an asteroid to fight around, and there was already a decent one available.

As for when other people get to see resources, I'd suggest that perhaps only those who have actually contributed resources and committed to being part of it get to examine the other resources. That was they could be improved without being that widely available.

A specific example - I was thinking about contributing a moon, (even did a ouple of trial versions last night!). I'm pretty sure that someone better at shading than me could (off the top of my head) quickly change it to an oren nayer shader or whatever, and improve it a lot,

The more I think about it, the more I think a closed forum for contributers, with access to resources, makes sense.

bmckain
8th September 2010, 08:52 AM
When you upload resources there is a category for "Epic Encounter". Once uploaded only myself and an approved Thorsun-Escelce account can view them.

As for posting work, I would say this forum is the place to do it but I will leave that up to Escelce.

When it comes to having someone else tweak something there's nothing to stop us from asking each other for help and then do a joint credit on the item.

I've actually got something bouncing around in my head... I like the shape and role... just need to sketch out the details.

Another thought.

I'm guessing that this is going to be two (?) clans/countries/planets etc? Since the ships could be any shape or form, it might be an idea for someone to come up with insignia for the sides. That only requires photoshop or the like. Then there will be some uniformity when it it comes time to texture the models.

Good idea - I'd also suggest that one side is assigned cool colours for where colours are used, and one warm (or some similar split)

WIP's
With regards to where to post WIP's the best place is either in this forum or in the WIP section. If you add the "EPIC ENCOUNTER_" or "EE_" at the start we will all be able to see your entries easier. Also please give feedback on each others work so this looks as good as it can be.

Individual or Team
At the end of the day this is a community based project so we fully encourage people to work together. So teams working on a model or entire bases is great. We intend to show off what we can all do, so the more we work together the more this will be a success.

Clans
Please don't come up with names or specifics for the teams just yet. The reason I say this is we have brought in a great writer who is going to be working with TE to make this a cool story and we want him to have creative freedom to incorperate everything we recieve on this. We will add any logos later on so don't worry about that part. The reason its best we do it here is because at the moment the idea bouncing around the office is there are upto 9 planets involved in this rather than just two armies. I'll be posting more on the story as we write it later on. But for now just say whether the model you are making is a good or bad guy.

I hope you enjoy seeing it unfold asmuch as we will enjoy working with your entries. We are also working on a promotional video which we will post here later.

One thing that hasn't been brought up but I would like to add it as a reminder... If your package supports it, we should all try to model to scale. ie the 5km long fighter will look odd and cause scaling problems when loaded into a scene that is to scale.

What about planets and moons? I normally do them at a few metres and scale in layout - working to scale at that size is not practical!

I have quite a few original series ships on my hard drive, although they are all in 3D Max format.

Escelce

Bills:
If you let us know the scale of the ship in the text file it should be fine. we can always scale them to their proper size in the scenes.

Starbase1:
No problem with the scaling on moons etc. Alot of the planet shots will be in the distance anyway so we can go with what works per scene.

Biotech:
Original series ships? Not sure what that means. If you can export them to either OBJ or 3DS it should be fine. We are only using Lightwave for the 3D part.

As far as a deadline is concerned we dont want to put too much pressure on people as we know this is done in your spare time. The plan at the moment is to gather up what we have at the end of March. This should hopefully give you plenty of time to finish up what you are doing. If you need more time let us know.

Sorry, Thorsun-Esscelce is no more. They had hoped the guys would get this one last item out the door before closing shop but it didn't happen.

Pity because I had hoped for an obj or lwo version of the Epic Encounters Fighter in Resources since it's crashed my MAX 2010 when trying to load it.

Sigh

I have Max 2012. However, I know absolutely nothing about it. Fine, easy enough to load a model and should be easy enough to export.

The model seems to load okay, except that half of it is inside out. I try to export to .obj it stops and gives the error message "vertex coordinate too big". What? Tried to export to .3ds (which Lightwave is happy with) and .dxf. Both will load into Lightwave but half the model is missing.

So I'm unable to get anything useful out of Max.

Thnx for trying :tu:

This situation is why I posted a request some time ago that posted models include an .obj version.

Elowan

Would posting an obj version of this mesh be a violation?

If not - could someone do it?

I've had no luck with Max 2010. The obj will not even load.

Hello! Anyone out there?

Is it possible that the mesh is filled with errors? Note Rigel's experience.

So ... you're having trouble loading the obj file into MAX? Sometimes MAX balks at obj files saved out of earlier versions.

Cybit
3rd June 2012, 06:51 PM
I agree, this is a bugger of a problem. My max 2011 keeps crashing when I try to open the file. Something about unexpected file length. I did get it to open in a 3d file viewer, but it's all messed up, missing faces and parts look inside out.
Gave it to my buddy who has max 12, he's giving it a go tonight. I'll keep at it and let you know.

Elowan

If you have Deep Exploration it may load there just fine as well as exporting into LW afterwards.

It was made in MAX version 2012 I believe.

I got it to open, will start converting it tomorrow. Not a bad looking model overall. I think I can reformat it to an object file or an LW file. Which format would you prefer?

Which ever is easier for you. Either works for me and thnx very much. Obj exports better out of MAX I believe. Then I can convert it to LW easily.

Cybit
3rd June 2012, 09:09 PM
Which version of LW do you have? I have 8.5, but I think I have either 9 or 10 as well. Been awhile since I've opened either version. 8.5 is my favorite...call me odd. :)

Elowan

I have LW 7.5 and 9.6. Just export it out as an obj file. Then it can be imported into any LW version

All resources on F3D are covered by the F3D agreement which is presented to you when you download a resource (unless otherwise stated by the author).

In that agreement it states:

6. You may otherwise modify your copy of this Package in any way, provided that you do one of the following:
* a) make your modified Package Publically Available by posting said Package to the Resources Section of www.foundation3d.com.

So no, you do not need permission to convert it. Once you get an .obj version, upload it to the resources and you are golden.

Downloaded this, tried to unzip it, and it says "No files to extract"
The zip file says 56+ mb.
An Avast scan of the zip file shows it scanned 190+mb's of files inside the zip.
So, is it me, or is the file corrupt?
I tried with the unzipper in Windows XP Home and with WinRAR.

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks... Did you ever read the write-uyp for the serenity RPG?

Imagine if you will the eerie and distant sound of a banjo slowly plunking out the tune of "My Darling Clementine" <O:p
<O:p
Oh my darlin’…
The commercial ore hauler, originally known as "Abbydale”, has had a long, colorful, and dark history. She served her original role for nearly 10 years, right up until the Independence War.

During the beginning part of the war she was converted into hospital ship by the ISN, and was re-christened "Clementia Adytum" or "Heart of Mercy". She served in this role for most of the war; becoming a giant, mobile, sickbay. At any given time, she could be carrying between seventy-five and hundred Browncoat wounded. Near the end of the war, as fighting became more intense and supplies became scarcer, the Clementia was sent on an emergency run to Shadow. The ship was loaded until it was overflowing with nearly four hundred wounded. She was able to escape the planet with her precious cargo only hours before the planet was bombed into oblivion by the Alliance.

Oh my darlin’…

The captain of the Clementia, Robert Lyons, wanted to steer clear of any Alliance ships, so instead of heading back toward his home base of Athens, he set course toward the rim. He and his navigator set a long, elliptical course that they hoped would steer them clear of any conflicts.

Their hopes were shattered when they ran into an Alliance patrol ship. With orders to destroy or disable any and all Independents ships, the patrol ship opened fire without warning. The Alliance missiles tore through the starboard side of the ship; destroying three of her holds and damaging most of the systems on the ship--including the fusion drive. Some 260 soldiers and crew were killed in the initial attack, including Captain Lyons.

Oh my darlin’ Clementine…

No one can be sure why the patrol did not finish her off. Perhaps they realized she was a hospital ship. Perhaps they were called away to a different battle. The truth and the facts were buried by the Alliance long ago. The only thing the survivors knew for certain was that they were on the drift, with little power and less resources. The crew was left with fatally wounded ship, 140 wounded soldiers, about 3 weeks of food and medical supplies, and a week's worth of fresh water. But the worst was yet to come.

With nearly half of the ship damaged and exposed to space, the surviving 157 passengers and crew had to get by as best they could. They rationed and repaired, but recycling and filtration systems were in bad shape and were slowly breaking down, the damaged reactor core was leaking radioactive particles, and the navigation and comm-systems were completely fried. The crew was able to set up a makeshift emergency beacon, hoping beyond all hope that someone would find them. Unfortunately both sides had a bigger distraction. The two factions had focused their full attention on Sturges, and the plight of the Clementia went unnoticed.

You are lost and gone forever…

The "Heart of Mercy" received none. They drifted in open space for about a week when their water filtration units went offline. With no source of fresh water, dysentery, typhus, and cholera ran rampant. Within another two weeks the survivor's numbers dwindled to only seventeen. The strongest of them was a man by the name of Terrance McCormick. With an aptitude for medicine and a photographic memory, Terrance had become a college professor before the war, trying his best to make sure people on the rim had a chance at an education. When the war broke out he became a medic for the Independents. He tried his best to rally the remaining men into repairing the life-sustaining functions of the ship, but lack of food and water had taken its toll. Those that had not died of disease or starvation were now showing signs of radiation poisoning. Within another three days Terrance was alone. As his life began to fade he began painting the names of all the dead on the walls of cargo hold 2. He floated through space in his giant, festering tomb; knowing he would never be saved.

Dreadful sorry, Clementine….

Six years later, on a routine flight from Persephone to the outer rim, the crew of the light freighter "Kanai" came across the drifting wreck of the Clementia. The horrors they saw on board most would take to their graves. In cargo hold 2 they found the body of Terrance McCormick, still clutching the paintbrush in his cold, desiccated hand. All along the walls were the 220 names of the passengers and crew who had died. The captain of the Kanai, Michael Bruyette, was a war veteran. He had fought on the side of Independence, and his brother had been on the Clementia when it went missing. To him the Clementia was another reason to hate the Alliance.

He applied for, and was granted, salvage rights. Using his entire savings, he salvaged and restored the Clementia to working order. He fitted her with new engines and new life support systems, and scoured her interior from stem to stern. The only part he left untouched was cargo hold 2. He left it as a monument to his fallen comrades and his brother. The cargo hold remains unused and untouched. He kept the name of the vessel, but refers to her as "Clementine".

Also Captain Bruyette has been making inquiries to find out who was responsible for the deaths of the crew. So far he has had no luck.

I once again tried to export the fighter and the comet destroyer out of Max. Going to .obj it says there's too many faces and quits. Going to .3ds it spits up another error and refuses to do it. I wonder what the point of having an export option for your software is when it can't handle the models being made with your software?
