MKF's Random Trek Crap!
Wow, I didn't realize I hadn't started one here! :crazy:
Well to start this thread out here is something old remade anew for the 4th time.
The U.S.S. Onimaru NCC - 76890 based off of a set of images posted by lennier1 over on SFM some uh, 2years ago? Which were from Bridge Commander and inspired by an Altom Drawing. (ugh I hope I got his name right lol)
The ship design Slots between the Galaxy and Sovereign in technology and design. Her mission is purely a exploratory one, so she is riddled with sensor "buckets" With a modular design so systems can quickly be changed out, or updated. The Onimaru is the 3rd of 5 ships built of this class. 7 years later 8 more ships were commissioned with newer equipment, the first 5 were then refitted with newer technology consisting of newer warp coil sets updated saucer warp system, new sensor racks and options was well as a shuttle compliment update. Weapons are updated to newer phaser strip power units Newer torpedo units capable of firing the newer types of probes and torpedos.

Ok enough geek crap that I placed handwavium on and pulled outta my tookus. :crazy:
On to the ship.

Info: modeled in 3ds max9 rendered with Mental Ray 3.5 (hence all the cool glass efx and reflected light etc.) Ship is roughly 530k polies.

Just some screwing around. TMP era or something. Not too creative in the fact it follows the typical layout but I could never bring myself to add nacelles to things or do away with a visible deflector dish ;p
But it is still a "sketch" so you never know what it'll change into in the end.

Catch up update.
The only things that are firm in design right now are the nacelles and saucer. And neck layout.

Very nice MKF!

I look forward to watching it progress.

One thing about the OniMaru that strikes me odd... I am not one to pander to the Treknobabble but I like the believability of the designs. I dont see the feasibility of a shuttle craft landing pad on the outside of the ship.
I am curious as how you envision its serviceability?

Serviceability as in it's function or use? Space has no friction to have the shuttle slide off with movement. Good example of this is Any EVA in orbit, the Astronauts don't fly off or get peeled away from the ship. Grav plating and magnetic clamps would secure things on deck. Intention the ship wouldn't be going to high impulse or warp with things here. Just during orbit or in dock/station.

As for function it is mostly intended for anything that wont fit height wise through the main doors. It is also used for staging materials for repairs or other things where you need a staging deck for receiving or departure of cargo and large objects.

Can't wait to see more on this one... As far as the shuttle outside the ship, it shows scale very nicely. I know a lot of people complain because most of the trek ships look very much alike, It's a fleet!!! Aircraft carriers look alike for a reason too, Function.

Changed some things around, dunno are the hull grids to pronounced? There is no black mat in the grooves but I have a sickening feeling I have to redo it all. Oh and the secondary and possibly saucer might get a redo anyhow. Just not happy with the struts and secondary atm.

More bodging about. I'm still polygon doodling so things are not at all stable or fixed. In the end I'm thinking up things to do with these TMP nacelles I made. ;p

Yet more messing around. Not happy with the recessed bridge or the surrounding structure so it might get removed for a less creative bridge arrangement, plan was to have it inset so that it would need heavy fire or direct top down fire to breach the bridge structure but leave it open for maintenance access.

I think I just have the underside and shuttle bulge left then its detailing, panels, and collapsing of any subdiv parts. I need to look at how to cram some torps in to this thing too. :crazy: :rolleyes: Plan is to have a semi detailed mesh around about 200K/250K polies when finished.
It will get TMP era impulse grill looks the plain blue glow is just temp.

Any opinions on the bridge? Should the sunken look return or should I approach it again with the idea of a more standard unit? Original idea was to have a more protected or sheltered unit due to this ships military purpose.

I think the spine slicing through that rear impulse section should go, or be changed so it doesn't cut through that rear center thing - split it and curve it round? - as I think it spoils the rear of the ship. Other than that I think it looks great!

What are the pointy pod things on either side?

Oh the little tubes are phaser cannons or whatnot seen on many non canon ships and the Miranda.

Messing with the impulse efx and added the control surfaces and fins to the nacelles. And redid the shuttle bulge. Impulse will need new custom maps and some adjustments. The grills are way too glass like with spec and reflective properties. (forgot to change them ;p) It oddly flattens the look of things too at steep angles. (note furthest grill in the 3/4 lower aft shot.) Shapes and glows in the Impulse are TEMP as well. Looking at the Miranda and a few others it is more of a round oval (granted it was most likely a light bulb or a U shaped cathode end on) SO, I will adjust to match later on.

I have to say I think I liked the inset bridge better but the raised up on is growing on me.

Very nice, very clean mdoelling so far and definately looks like something from the TMP era.

You also have a nice spot for a torpedo launcher on the aft ventral side beneath the shuttle bay.

Wow. I am loving how this is evolving. Very nice shapes, with dynamic views.
