Painting onto a sphere?
Is there an easy, reasonably priced tool that will let me paint onto a sphere with a UV map?

I'm fairly specific in what I mean by paint - I want something that works like the PS clone brush, from a flat image onto a sphere, with a soft edge to the result.

What I have in mind is to take sections of lunar elevation maps, clone them onto a much smaller sphere, and use the result as a displacement map, to make dwarf planets and cratered asteroids.

There might be another way without a 3D prog and an actual UVmap.
I used it once, but I can't remember the workflow for it.

you can make the poles of you planettexture with the polar coordinates filter of Photoshop.
Something like this.

You can use it as layer for the North and South of the map and add another layer under it for the equatorial region. After merging both, you can fine-tune the borders with a stamp or clone tool.

Sorry that I can't be more specific. But with a bit try and error you will find the best flow.

Work of 20 minutes. No love or care for details. Just a Moontexture reused. But it does work. :D

OK, that looks workable, thanks!

Anyone have a more direct 3d type approach / tool please?

Mari, there's a PLE that's very reasonably priced for industry standard 3D texturing software.

I can see it offers a lot for the money, but out of my current budget.
