Default Fantasy - Battle Legends – Episode 1 – A Cel-Shaded Short Film

Hello there, my name is Leo Tierney and I have recently completed a short CG film that may interest you all called Battle Legends!

'Battle Legends' is an original story of two young gamers who, against their will, are transported back to a fantastical time with orcs, paladins and dragons, only equipped with their brains and skills to help them survive. It then chronicles their tales as they attempt to get back home or stay.

In this short film I tried to recreate the original feel of 90s anime cartoons that some of us grew up with, but instead of using hand drawn images I created everything with 3d cel shades to give the illusion of 2d images.

I have designed a poster to help promote the film which can be found here -

UPDATE - Battle Legends Episode One is now available on the Machinima Youtube Channel and is available for viewing here -

Enjoy the film!

I didn't have time to watch the entire thing just now, but it looks well done. There were some obvious problems with shoulder deformations on the characters while they were hammering on the anvils.

And welcome to Foundation 3D.

Hey Leo. You obviously put a lot of work into that and its great to see an animator who goes all the way with a story, rather than just quick flybys and tests etc. I'd say certain areas of the film had more work on than others and some obvious deformation issues here and there but regardless it falls into a "stylised" vision and does look like a lot of the classic 90's anime which you aimed for. One little thing i would add is to keep the voice acting a little more "awake". Theres times when no matter how well you animate it, its very slow paced and i did find myself reaching for the fast forward around the start. Needs to keep going especially when you have a theme which most people here would enjoy....Fantasy etc. I hope that helps and best of luck with the rest of the episodes.

Thanks for the comments guys, yeah there are a few deformation problems, if anyone has any links to some good biped rigging tutorials I'll be more than happy
Hopefully for the next episodes I should be able to improve the voice acting as well, maybe some proper audio equipment wouldn't go amiss too
Thanks again!

Look forward to seeing more. One thing I've learned in the 10+ years I've been playing around with Lightwave is that the more you do it, the more you learn and the better you get. By the time you get to episode 5 it'll look really polished and you'll be wanting to redo the first four episodes!
