Well, I'm sure there will be a publicly available XI Enterprise along soon enough, of course MadMan has already made a nice Blender version, that's been converted to many other formats.

All the decent models, are either unavailable, or require purchase.

However, there are the occasional generous people, like Dennis Bailey, Prologic9, etc. who release their excellent models freely.

I already took a stab at modeling, I couldn't do it, much less like you or Prologic, etc.

I'll stick to the free models, to which I alter to make my own, however still give credit where credit is due, for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GkelX5Zy14

Prologic9 made the model
KnightRider converted it to max
Flat Eric made the texture maps
Not sure if KnightRider and Flat Eric applied the textures, but nevertheless.

I've enhanced the effects lighting a little, for the nacelle and bussard light casting, and altered the glows on the bussards and warp grills, I've even taken a texture from one of the Galaxy classes for STBC, and used it for the nacelle glow, to give it a more popping effect, rather than a solid color, and I've added glows on the windows, and enhanced the glows on the directional lights, etc. KnightRider has done some great additions, but I further improved upon them.

I think my Forté is modifying already existing models, heck, I've even converted Bridge Commander models, that are relatively decent, I plan on converting a really nice Borg Tactical Cube.

Great work!

And with the help of tobian, I am sure that this will turn out to be awesome.

Lets just hope that it does not take as long as the Pluto Station. *runs*

What is it with the “download generation” and their out-of-control self-entitled attitude? They not only want everything for free, they feel they are entitled to everything for free.

Put the time and effort in to learn how to do it themselves? Nope, can't be bothered to waste time and effort doing that. Or barring being able to do that; to even think or consider about paying for someone else's hard work because they happen to want it (what a concept). Nope. That's just crazy-talk.

Or perhaps (extending you the benefit of the doubt, Chris); that angry face you used is just because you yourself can't afford the models yet, and that makes you angry. In that case, I can cut you some slack.

Looks great as always, dude. Sorry to hear your back is buggin' you so much these days, eh.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, I've suffered from back pain for months!! After RPG (physiotherapy) sessions, the pain has gone (at least I donīt fell it all the time). To keep the right posture all the time (walking, writing, watching tv, etc) is hard, but surelly helps. Therefore I have a new pain (now in the right arm) and Iīm going to see the doctor... The problem is that a computer career is what I have. My job isnīt about cgi, but my hobby is. I love scifi and meshes, so....
These pains and just a small freetime available are what donīt leave me to spend to much time doing cgi. So, Iīm an old and slow man when talking about my hobby.
Hey Alain, have you heard news about bionics??

Chris,

Not to sound rude or anything, but how long have you been doing CG? Most of the folks here have been doing it for years. I encourage you to try harder and learn the skills you need to create models of your own. Look in the Fundementals and Instructions potion of this site:

http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/f...splay.php?f=17

Also look in resources:
http://www.foundation3d.com/index.php?categoryid=39

You will find many tutorials you could benefit from.

In the meantime, download the meshes avaialable in the resource section, but DO NOT complain about how all the "good" meshes are not available for free. That will only provoke people who work very hard to create their own unique work. This is a place for polite discussion and help in training people to do better at 3D and improving their skills.

If you would make the effort to learn how to model you would maybe then appreciate Alain's attitude. Learning modelling is not rocket science but it does require a fair bit of effort and perseverence. And once you do achieve a level of competency at it you will get an understanding of how much work not only goes into making a model of that quality but to even get to the point of producing work like that. Would you expect him to also just give away the guitars he makes? After all its only a few pieces of cheap wood and cat gut. Like anything hand made it requires skill and effort to do which means it has value to both the maker and to people who appreciate such items. To expect that they should be obligated to just give it away is rediculous.

Some people do so but thats not because they don't value their work. I used to because I got a kick out of seeing people making images with it. The only reason I don't anymore is that I haven't made anything worth releasing in the past few years. But the fact that I used to doesn't mean I think others should be forced to. Hell if I did I would have been pestering Craig for that big crawler thingy of his years ago.

Also learning to use your 3d prog of choice properly also has other benefits. You will find your overall skillsets improving in other areas such as animation, surfacing etc. Don't fool yourself into thinking its too hard. Trust me it's only a matter of making the effort.
