My opinion is the purple works better for the format. It helps anchor them together more than the blue.

Although from a purely 'eye pleasing' point of view the blue color is more satisfying as blue is my favorite color.

But purple is best for this style, I think.

Thanks for the comments one and all. Sorry to be a little late getting back to this but I was still getting over being sick, what a PITA. Anyway, another adjustment to the composition, hoping it's about ready to move on to lighting.

You noticed. That'll get cleaned up for the final render. It didn't like it's import so it's no biggie to clean up when I am ready to set the lighting.

Default Lighting

Well, we didn't get very far but you can see the beginnings of the lighting. In the end I'll do one blue and one with the purple. For right now, I am concentrating on the blue since it's just one color source. Started with implied light sources and building it up from there so other than the rig lights there are only three lights in the scene atm, a primary star, binary star and a rim light. Almost feels like going back to square one but I think it's easier to sort the lights now that I know what the final comp is. I am building the scene with animation in mind now too so hopefully this will all work together when I'm done.

Very nice start to the lighting. It's very moody and cold.

I'm with Jack on the wallpaper idea, but I can't wait to see the finished article on my desktop...

Finally at a stopping point for today, got a LOT done and I'm very happy about that. I think this stage will have been the most challenging and the next two should be a lot quicker. At this point I am still rendering quarter size until I am sure we're done, done. At that point I'll render a full size image which will be 4096x2244 before ripping it into three sections. Anyway, todays work.

Excellent stuff... the lighting of the drydock really brings it to the viewers attention, while the sheer size of the stardock still sells that in the piece.

Nice work Bob. But what are the black marks on the bottom of the ship's saucer? Battle damage?

Under construction. It'll be very clear with the large image.

Added the lighting for the refit and fixed it's issues this afternoon. I've run out of time for today so another session and hopefully the lighting will be done. We changed the nacelle and still don't like it. May lose the nacelle all together but for now I'll sleep on it. And for those who wonder, this is image number 49 in the light tests. There have been a ton more limited region tests but I only save out the full render tests.

With the Connie in there, this image just continues to evolve. Nice work, and looking forward to the next stage.

One thought: could you add a little more blue to the lighting on the underside of the E that's in the dry dock?

I really like the image. The problem I have with the nacell is that it just looks like its floating there. In earlier iteration the workbees were really hard to see and its current placement gets a little lost in the lighting from the drydock.

Might I suggest a different compositon altogether?

I've had a quick play - don't have a copy of that drydock and haven't put full lighting in there but it goes along these lines.....

its a cool comp fabs, it probably works better as the single image, but it doesn't work as the triptych, the individual frames are kinda unbalanced, (plus at this stage i think bobs just wants to get 'er done

we still need to drop the Excelsior in to frame 3, and possibly some smaller background elements, a bit of tweaking of that nacelle in panal 1, but i thinks its pretty much good to go after that
