Default Maya Annoys Me A Lot!

Hello friends,

Got a new PC. A Core i5 - not the most amazing on the market but works fine so far. Except with Maya. I have Maya 2011. And I have to use it with Win7 x64's AERO style - yeah I know that sounds like nonsense but that's the truth about Maya working on Win7. If you use it on Basic or Classic, Hotbox doing funky things. I might post screen shot later.

Well anyway, I feel like I reached the Rubicon right now. So I'm thinking to go with another package. I tried 3ds Max for a while but just don't like it, not for me. I'm thinking to go back to Cinema 4D or go with Lightwave. Because a full featured C4D is as expensive as Max and Maya. I'm working part-time with an architectural office supplying me using Maya/Max but I want to go separate ways with them too.

I know many of you using Lightwave and doing amazing work with it. But it looks REALLY hard to learn - despite the famous slogan of Newtek "go ahead and make a scene". I think I can go ahead and make a mess with it instead

So you think I can handle learning Lightwave? Also I spend a lot of money for the learning material for Maya and Zbrush. I don't think I can buy that much tuts for LW - is there a free learning resource you guys can recommend?

Sorry for the rant and too many questions buried in one paragraph.

Thanks in advance!

I use Maya 2011 on windows 7 64 bit without any problems.

What are the issues you're having?

Here's the issue I am having. I'm using Nvidia GT520 with most recent driver. Maya always offers new issues no matter what... I'm sure if I solve this one there'll be another one come up.

And that "glitch" stays in the screen while using hotbox so makes it impossible to read. But the VIEWCUBE is awesome! :-/

Can you give an explanation for this? I am using 501 right now and was recently considering the upgrade...but if it's got fatal flaws well, 501 does the job y'know?

@Kerem - Maya hates us, it's true. Have you tried rolling back to an older GPU driver? I bought a Quadro 2000 just for Maya, and it's still buggy from time to time.

Lightwave! , i see you use zbrush, lightwave has built in support for direct interchange between maya and z brush so you can still keep using your old apps as you learn!
best place for free stuff is william vaughans at newtek, a lot of videos and real easy to follow, i still refer back to them all the time, (even watched 3 of them today!)

I'm still using Maya 2008 on Mac, that I had from school. I have no problems, other then the problems that VK face And its still stable; and for a school project I rendered out a animation as images, took 9 days straight ;-)

Turkish prices are worse 3500 euros for Max, 4500 euros for Maya.

It doesn't matter what or where. As long as you are a student and have a student ID. Just looked doesn't cost a cent and is good for 3 years.

http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet...12&id=14185424

Just pick your software.

I recently signed up for that, checking the box that I am unemployed (which I am) and I was able to get 3DS Max for Windows, Smoke and Sketch Book Pro for Mac, for free.

I registered there too after I read this. I checked the same box with you. I'm downloading Max 2012... So it's totally free?!! Or putting watermarks to render or something? Or is there a expiration date of the software?

Sorry about the twenty questions - but I'm excited. I think I can also download Mudbox.

There mush be a catch though... I don't think they just give away their most expensive software to unemployed people (which also I actually am now)

According to what I read on the site, it's a 3 year license for non-commercial usage only. Didn't say anything about watermarks. Sounds similar to what Side Effects software does with Houdini.

It doesn't have watermarks, but saved objects, scenes, and what have you open with a dialog box telling you they're for noncommercial use whenever you open them in a version of Maya with a different license (either a paid educational version or the commercial version). That can get exciting when you have scenes that have a lot of stuff referenced in.

(When I was in school, a lot of the kids used the free student edition of Maya to work on things out of class, and we ended up with very complex scenes in our class projects)
