Default VFX breakdowns for Space Ship Yamato

Kind of cool to watch how some of the effects shots are put together.

Yeah, it's a pity, that vfx footage is probably as close I get to seeing the damn movie. I don't understand why it's not released in the US yet?

This is a quote from a fan site about the international releases...

"For those still holding out for a version with English subtitles, the clock is ticking down to an Australian release from Madman Entertainment in December 2011. Keep your eyes on the Madman website here. Australian DVDs and Blu-Ray discs both require multi-region players to be viewed in the US, but those can be found without great difficulty. For those still holding out for a dubbed version, there won't be one since Takuya Kimura's contract specifically states that he can never be dubbed by another actor. So it's sub-only in other countries."

Oooh! Is there a way to find out if your DVD player supports multi-region (other than having a multi-region disc to try out)?

Actually MANY Dvd Players out there today can play Multi Region discs
with a small " hack " ....

Google your model number of your DVD player and add
MULTI REGION HACK or some similar language..

"" Most ""
of the time it's just a simple matter of entering in a code thru
your remotes keypad...

that's a shame because I will not watch sub titles, I want to watch a movie, not read one. This looks like a good movie but I won't see it unless it is dubbed.

I have the English subtitled version at home. Someone was nice enough to send it to me from Japan. It's quite nice. Reading it isn't a problem for me, obviously.

They compressed an awful amount of stuff into a 2 hour flick. It's nice though.

In the UK its really easy to buy one if you shop around. On the other hand just rip the dam thing and put your disks on a great big USB hard drive...

I'm not sure much artistic integrity will be lost by watching a dubbed version of Space Battleship Yamato

But in general I agree with you.

My girlfriend saw this at the cinema when she was in Japan last year, and said it was extremely cheesy.

The VFX breakdowns look quite nice though There's some lovely fluid work in there.

too true in this case, personally i just cant stand anything thats been dubbed and i guess you could call it a pet peeve of mine.

and yes it def has a Cheesy stench about it thats for sure but imo its worth watching for the CGI alone

You can buy a subtitled DVD and BluRay on Amazon now. As previously mentioned, there will be no dubbed version. Which probably explains why it won't be released here in the states. My fiance got me the Japanese super deluxe collectors edition on Bluray last time she was in Japan.

It's a gorgeous movie. Especially given the budget. As far as how good a movie it is...

What you need to remember, it's a Japanese movie, made for Japanese audiences. What might be considered melodrama to us, is drama to them. The plot stays faithful to what Yamato is, but makes, in my opinion, necessary changes for live action and the times we live in. (as opposed to almost forty years ago) And it does a lot more character development than most American films do nowadays, which some might see as slow. (i.e, it's not a Michael Bay film).

It also makes a lot more sense both in terms of acting and character development if you can understand the original language, rather than depend on a sometimes spotty subtitled translation. And as my future wife is Japanese, I've been learning the language so I can hold a conversation with her family when we visit without her having to translate everything. And as I learn more and more, I'm discovering how much more enjoyable movies like Yamato are if you can watch and understand them in the original language.

I know from living with a Deutschlander (that's German to you english blokes) for the past 19 years that language truly does shape how you think and not everything can be translated. Germans say things in their language that simply don't exist in english, in terms of how people think. So translated movies, unless the dialogue is very basic, tend to lose something.

Last night I watched a documentary on Australian genre films and the one director said that he discovered that action transcends language barriers. A good round house kick works in any language.

Exactly. And in Japanese there are a LOT of things that have no western equivalent.

I've watch Yamato several times now. Both with and without subtitles. And I think it's a great movie.

I don't believe that in terms of thinking. Certainly I can understand there are cultural and language problems where a simple phrase in japanese might take a much longer explanation to get it across in english and vice versa, such that there is no direct short western translation but the thoughts can surely be got across given time.

watched it in snippets on Youtube -- loving it - now to find a real DVD in the USA - checked at Amazon but there are a billion different versions -- any idea which one is the best one to get?

That's what I meant. I didn't mean there was no English equivalent Just not a short or simple one. I probably should have said there's no direct western equivalent.

All of the ones that I've seen on Amazon are basically bootlegs/grey market. If you don't mind that, just take your pick and buy one.

The legit ones can be bought from CD Japan. However they don't have subtitles and are region 2, which means you need an all region DVD player to watch them. The Blu-ray is advertized as region free though. And they will ship to the US.

DVD: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=TCED-1117
Blu-ray: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=TCBD-24

AFAIK, there is no "official" English subtitled version yet.

This a great movie IMO, all thr cheese of Starship Troopers, but with japanese visuals. The VFX are great through out the movie. Sure it has odd bits that are below par, but every film does pretty much. Well worth a watch!

Cheers!

I was a fan of the first season of the animated series and would love to see this movie.
