I'm afraid that allowing people to speak freely is too much for governments to allow.

Canada is also working on a similar bill; probably at the insistence of the U.S. government. And the British government has a similar bill.
If we all stop using the Internet, cancel our accounts and cause all of the ISP's to go out of business, they might, MIGHT, change their minds. As if that would ever happen. People are too eager to sell their freedom and privacy down the river because, "omg I cantz live with no facebooks or twitters". |

The UK has its own version of this and it's awful. This text that I'm writing now will be catalogued and available for inspection should the intyellignece services want it.
This is in case I'm a terrorist. (has that keyword flagged this post up? If I were building the system that's how it would work) Every email to be open for reading? No. Not that I have anything interesting to hide particularly, but just in principle I want to encrypt everything now. |

Depends on the encryption. There are secure methods to be had, with open source code to verify the fact and verify no govt backdoors. And if it was just between me and someone else I can always make a one time pad which is in effect unbreakable.
But, as has been pointed out in the past, if you ARE arrested you have no legal right to withold the keys and 'I've forgot' is not a valid legal excuse. AND it's easier to lock you up and threaten you with a hammer to get the keys rather than try to decrypt it. |

Not to mention their logic that the very fact you encrypted it in the first case points to the fact that you have something to hide which is suspicious in itself....
damned if you do - damned if you don't |

But the kicking back is growing - see this link for politicians in Poland wearing Anonymous masks to protest ACTA http://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyols...-fawkes-masks/ And the kickback is very loud in the UK right now... Still, I'm connected right now via VPN with 32k bit encryption.. And as for encrypted connections looking suspicious, they are already very widely used by people working from home, or connecting to banks etc. |

I hope google come up with a way to obfuscate most browsing in chrome, somehow sidestepping any recording by ISP's, and encrypt (with no possibility of a back door) gmail for security.
The problem is that most people just don't care enough about it to fight it, so those who do will have to find workarounds. TOR is there for the future. I think darknets will play a big role soon enough but ultimtely I don't think this is one that we can win. |
