When it comes to animation, the process is similar to game models. You build a low poly mesh and use a high density mesh as normal maps. If I was to up the detail on this model, I would consider taking her into Mudbox or zBrush and increasing the detail there.
The difference between gaming modelling and animation modelling is that you need to be a little more frugual with the way you do your texture mapping etc in gaming. They can't be too big. Normally you don't need to get up close to the gaming character, whereas you do with the animated character.

I thought I might include something for Ros to stand on once she's rigged. So I built a TigerLily.

Many thanks for the reply and info....nice Tiger Lily by the way, and an interesting idea!

That Tiger Lilly is great, Colly. Simple, clean mesh and the texturing really sells it. Great stuff!
Only thing I could recommend is maybe upping the resolution of the textures if they are going to be seen that close, but they still fit the part great.

Some of you have been wondering what happened to Ros.
Well, She's in the throws of being rigged. I'll post these up to show you where I'm up to. Nearly finished.

Its not something I do often, so when I do its like putting my brain through a blender. That's why its taking so long

There are two possible approaches.
You could create extra detail through modelling or in Mudbox/zBrush and then apply them to the base mesh as a normal map. This doesn't get in the way of the animation.
If, however, you wanted animation in the pleats of the dress, you may need to add further detail to the base mesh. The amount of detail will depend on what you want as a result and how long you are prepared to wait for the software to catch up to your animating and keyframing.

Had a bit of a downer today.
There's an issue with Maya 2011. The ability to change the input order is broken. So when I added some blend shapes, the curves I was using for lip deformation stopped working.
The issue is resolved in Maya 2012. So, in order for me to continue with rigging the head, I need to upgrade.

Hopefully get that sorted in the next few days.

Great job on this CollyWolly, she's got lots of attitude! As for not being able to change input order in 2011, wtf? I mean, if it isn't broken in 2010, why mess with it?

Being able to change the input order is necessary for the facial animation to work between spline based rigging and blend shapes. I am currently using Maya 2011 and this feature is broken. (I tried a work around but no joy.) Moving over to Maya 2012 will fix it.

Cool looking forward to seeing your next update, did you have to un-install Maya 2011 to get 2012 installed

Its always better to do so but I have had various versions installed before. This time around I chose to just have 2012 installed. Nice and clean.
