Default Bulk image conversion retaining folder structure?

Hi All,
Something that's come up occasionally in the past has just reared its head in a big way...

There are plenty of programs around that will do bulk conversion (and optional resizing) of images, but I'm not aware of any that will operate on sub folders, and recreate the folder structure for the new version images...

Photoshop Elements 9 has loads of options - but I can't see that one anywhere. If you select sub-folders, it scans the input directory but dumps all the output in the one output directory.

To explain, I've just received about 11 gigabytes of images from NASA archives. They are all very large with slight or no compression. They start out sensibly organised in folder by the subject covered, so there's a folder for nuclear propulsion, and a sub-folder for NERVA, and so on, with dozens of folders.

And I want to convert everything to medium compression JPG images, without changing the folder structure, so they are nice and easy to browse on my tablet, without using too much storage unnecessarily.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Cheers,
Nick

You could give The Compressonator a try. If i remember right it will allow you to preserve the directory structure when batch compressing files.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a go this evening.

Any one got any other ideas?

Cheers,
Nick

You can do it with Photoshop Macros.

Is that full photoshop, or elements?
And is it provided or would it mean coding a macro?

If all else fails, do one folder at a time.

I don't know if elements has it or not.. but its a simple thing to set up if it is. You add a macro. give it a name and hit record. Process one image the way you want. It will record what you do until you hit stop.

Then in the file menu (photoshop) batch(?) in the requester feed it that macro you made and tell it to do it recursive. Then just leave it alone for a while and it will just loop the macro until its done.

PS.. don't forget to CLOSE the image while still recording... PS doesn't like having a few hundred images loaded if you forget that part.....

I can see how this would handle the image save settings - but how would I get it to create a new folder name matching the one it came from? No macro recorder I have ever seen is smart enough to pick up up that a new subfolder I type in matches an old one from the source file location...

If you have deep exploration.. it will do the conversion easy enough.. not sure about the file structure though

Photoshop(full, not sure with elements) has image processor. File>scripts>image processor.
This also keeps the file structure.

PS Elements 8 for Mac does not have any Scripts options on the menu, so that one is not there. Don't know about the Windows version.

Thanks to all for suggestions - I tried to trick PSE but no joy.

Compressonator looked good - but failed to load jpg's! I'm probably doing it wrong.

Currently I have found a thing called IRFANVIEW which seems to be chugging through slowly. It's creating a lot of files in my temp directory, so I'm hoping it will move them out when its done. This definitely seems within its capabilities, though I found the huge number of options a bit confusing...

I'll see where it gets to by morning.

G'Nite!

I can confirm that the free "Irfanview" did a brilliant job, and has more options than you can shake a stick at for batch processing of images.

Highly Recommended.

(In case anyone is wondering, I found about it by a highly circuitous route - I was wondering if there was a Gimp plugin for this sort of thing, and a google search led me to a page which basically said, don't use Gimp, use Irfanview.)

Surprised Compressonator didn't handle jpegs, but i've not tried it with that myself.

I forgot about Irfanview, haven't used it for a long time now but it's quite a nice program.

Irfanview! Wow, that's been around a long time. I remember using that in a web design course back in 1997.

What, do you work for them!

Why would you need to say the name of the proggie three times in the same paragraph!

I smell a large dose of SPAM!!!

Paint Shop Pro have a nice bath file conversion with lots of settings and you can choose the same folder or create a new one.

I use ACDSee for batch image operations, as it allows multi-selecting folders for viewing and also batch operations. Dead handy not just for file format stuff, but also renaming of files etc...

Cheers!

Not only tops softwares can do a good job !

I actually have CS2 but still using PSP 7 a lots in my digital paintings, Its more how wise you use it , knowing how to avoid the the limitations that you can get a great result !
