Default SciFi - Aries 1b from Space Odyssey

I dithered a bit about leaping into another 2001 object so soon, particularly with several recent unfinished projects,. but what the heck.

Here's a start on the Aries 1B

I've put the plans on as textures, (which doesn't work quite as well as I hoped), but still should be handy. The red band is where the windows go.

I think this could be a lot tricker than the station, as almost everything is on a curved surface...

I've been working on the nurnies and stuff around the engines - these renders only have them roughly in place.

Like with the station, I'm not trying to get the nurnies exactly like the model, but I am looking at the shape and style of the more obvious ones. A lot of work for a rough approximation!

One thing OI have already noticed - all plans and models seem to have a tube inthe centre ofthe engine array inside the hexagoinal housing. From what I can see, there's a hole in the middle of it...

Dang dude. I was going to post my refs but you've obviously got it well in hand.
But in case you think you might need them:
Aries.zip
This has some hi-res ref photos, some schematics which I think you have better versions of, some interior images and some cg pics of Jaepus' model from 2011, over at sci-fi meshes. Anyway enjoy!

Thanks Tony.

This has really made me think about my approach to making these things look right, As I said earlier, I really don't ewant totry and slavishly make the nurnies look as much like the pooriginal as possible - not least because without high res views from all sides, it would not be possible.

So I'm very much going for the look and feel, such that I hope people who look at it without the priginal for direct comparison will think it's very accurate, but that will not survive close inspection.

For the engines housings for example, I made 180 degrees of it using shapes like those I could see on the real one. I then cloned and rotated 180 degree, before swapping some elements vertcally, so they don't look like exact clones.

One of the things that makes me nervbous about this CGI lark, is it sometimes feels like the only way I have of making these things look better is to add more / finer details, or make it more like the original subject. And I don't think this is something many traditional artists would do...

It's an essential approach in some cases, (for example if you are doing a refererence work, such as my N-1 project), but it's stiill one I try to get away from.

In this case I think I have better references than thosewho tackled this subject before! I think very few people have =been working from HD grabs from the film, let alone that book I bought!

But I hope that another factor is that I am getting better at this stuff!

Test animation of an engine unit...

I made some changes to bring it more in line with the Treybor refs, notabley the ridges down the sides of the trio of cylinders.

Default Update time!

I was a bit nervous about the thrusters as I was not sure about the exact slopes - what was really flat, what aligned with the hull, and what was horizontal. So I decided to do a rough version first - and very glad I did. It's not as simple as it looks...

Although below the equator I think the main thruster sticks out horizontally, and the fan shaped bits are flat but tipped towards the curved hull...

I also added roughly placed bits that block out non windows based on projecting plans onto the mesh, so I can compare how that lines up too.

That rough shape looks about right. - but maybe a little closer to the fuselage on the top blast plate. And remember the the open area between the lower blast plate and the ribbed underside. I forgot that on my first attempt.

The thrusters are fine, but the mounting and deflector plates arounfg them are driving me nuts! I'm sure the edges are all straight, which implied the groooved parts are essentially flat, but alighned to roughlythe curved hull. The thrusters stick out horizontally, but the riund bit around the base is sliced at an angle...

I'm getting lots of practice with the shear tool, and it's still not right...

This is turning into hard work, the ridged bits between windows were hell to work out...

Turns out one set of 4 is evenly spread between the attitude jets, but the other 4 are offset from the jets slightly, and mirrored X and Z for some weird reason, despite pretty much every plan I can see saying they were evenly spread...

Really?! This one feels a bit slow and painful to me, not really flowing like the station did. And I've not even got to the nasty big curved panels on panels yet..

My first attempt at proper curvy panels on a proper curvy surface... (As seen at the top of the ship)

I think I have the paneling at about the right height above the hull, and I think I can see how it's going to end up...

Looks pretty decent to me as well. I hate doing panels really, especially on curved surfaces.

For panels on curved surfaces, multi-shift is your friend.

It's more the set up that I have a problem with, then I can just use Vertibevel.
