Default LightWave - Gradually revealing a trajectory?

OK, here's an overview of the scene I have in mind.

I'm planning a view of the inner solar system, with simple hoops representing the planets orbits. And small sphere's moving along those hoops to show motion along the orbit. All very highly stylised. The objective is to make a 3d arrangement clear, not any sort of realism.

Anyway, I want to show the trajectory of a probe, which will curve in from earth to Venus, where it is diverted up to pass over the Sun, and meet Venus again on the other side, where it is diverted in close to the sun.

Now I can make a 2 point poly chain in modeller, of the required shape. This could then be used to guide a rail extrude to mark out the path. With me so far?

Now what I want to do with this trajectory path object is reveal it gradually, from starting point to finish. So for example, if it was a simple luminous white texture, this would appear to grow along trajectory, like the spacecraft was leaving a luminous path behind it.

Any ideas on how this might be achieved?

I meant to use a weight map to control the visibility of the object.
You could use a gradient on the transparency and animate it over time to move the point at which the object changes from transparent to opaque along the weight map.
