For the new exploration tools, have a look at Obsis tutorial.

For approaching a station in super cruise, set a keybinding to 75% speed. That way you will stay in the blue area of the speed and shouldn't shoot over.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the tips and tricks. According to my Steam launcher, I've now been playing 32 hours. I love this game!

I've been reading tutorials and articles on the web, watching Youtube and just remembering a lot of how it worked in Frontier: Elite II (which I played for several years on my Amiga).

Captain's Log: December 28, 3304

Cmdr. Sidewinder Jack; Universal Joint CN1961

While making my way to Maia, I stumbled upon a system which was marked First Discovered but not First Explored. So I stopped and mapped out the 6 planets and moons.

I then decided to land on the moon of the sixth planet; Trianguli Sector RT-Q AF-0 4A. Once my Cobra Mk III was safely on the surface, it suddenly occured to me. I was looking at a place no other human had visited before.

Very cool!

Captain's Log: Supplemental

Sold my data to the Universal Cartographics. Now when you look at the map for Trianguli Sector RT-Q A5-0 you will see, first mapped by Sidewinder Jack.

I have my name recorded for all of history to come. Woo hoo!

Captain's Log: December 29 3304 (Galaxy clock)

Cmdr. Sidewinder Jack; Universal Joint CN1961

Entered the 16 H Orionis system and honked. Received a report of 37 bodies in the system. Six of those were stars/dwarves. Some bodies had been first mapped already. I was able to first map 25 of them. Need to reach a station where I can sell the data.

Supplemental: 01:45 hrs

Arrived at Hennepin Platform in HIP 24923. Sold cartographic data (other than 16 H Orionis) for nearly 400,000 CR and was promoted to Surveyor.

You really can make good money with exploring! Account balance now just over 1.3 million CR.

Captain's Log: December 29 3304 05:45 hrs (Galactic clock)

Cmdr. Sidewinder Jack; Universal Joint CN1961

Arrived at Darnielle's Progress to purchase meta-alloys for the engineer Felicity.

Will spend the night here before making the 400 ly (?) trip back. I hope this engine upgrade is worth the trouble!

Then I need to find something for another engineer.

You should set a goal to try to catch up to one of us that's already out in the black. I think I'm only about 3-4000ly away, headed toward the rim, but I'm moving pretty slow.

LOL I'll see what I can do. Now, if only this game had the wormhole bug from Frontier: Elite II.

So after playing my character Sidewinder Jack, for about 30 hours, I decided to start over. I decided that I want my real name on planets I get first discovered/mapped credit for. So I deleted Jack and created Rigel Chiokis. In about 1/3 the time, I'm at Maia to buy my meta-alloy for the engineer, had 13 million credits, so I bought a Dolphin and swapped out all of the modules (it can now jump 16.3 ly and carries 32 tons of fuel, cargo bay, vehicle hangar, plus sensors and fuel scoop).

Mapping worlds and selling the data is really good money! Did you know that surface mapping a water world is 600k+?

I also bought a Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X for the game. Makes life easier, especially doing the FSS scans.

Yeah, I've got one of those. Best bang for the buck, and really changes the game.

I recently bought the Krait MKII and outfitted it for mining. Was mining some pristine rings near Hel and netted over 100,000,000 credits in an hour or so. Looking to upgrade to either a Type 10 or a Conda soon and keep the mining train going. Just want to make sure I've got enough credits to A rate it. Before mining it was Rez fighting in a Chieftain. 705 hours in and I finally feel like I'm getting something done lol.

LOL It only took a 705 hours? LOL

Note to self: before heading out to mine stuff for engineering upgrades, make sure you have a refinery on board!!

My immediate goal at this point is to get a decent jump range on the ship I have, then I am going to head to the star called Rigel. Why? Because I'm named after it! I wish I could visit Rigel in Real Life(tm) but that isn't going to happen. So I might as well do it in a virtual galaxy!

I'm hoping I get the First Discovered for it, but I don't have any hope of that really. Rigel has always figured prominently in science fiction (it's one of the easiest to spell star names in the catalogue after all), so it would be a miracle that some SF fan playing this game hasn't already gone there. But still, it would be cool for people to look at Rigel, first discovered by Rigel.

I'm currently hauling Soontil Relics to unlock my second engineer. Odd how every pirate on the way wants to steal those tourist trinkets. It's just one bloody interdiction after another!

Speaking of names on systems. I came across a few systems last night where the planets were all marked First Mapped By (cmdr name) but not First Discovered By (cmdr name).

I'm guessing that means the character that had that credit was deleted. I've also found the odd planet here and there which wasn't labelled First Mapped By but I didn't get the credit for it. Again, I assume someone did it, deleted that character and the game removed their name.

Sometimes what it means is they honked the system but didn't do the surface scan. I found a few on the outer rim of the bubble where they obviously flew through with a basic scanner because the outer planets were undiscovered. Made a nice haul off those. Still haven't found an unclaimed water world though...
I think even if the account gets deleted the discovery stays. Did you turn in the data for the discovery?

Yes. I've been selling everything I collect. Even if it's just a honk. I've found 2 unmapped water worlds now (not undiscovered though) and they were good money.

I figure I need to get out of the bubble to find undiscovered systems. Eventually, I want to head to the galactic core. I may even aim for the opposite side. If you're going to dream, dream big!

I'm just so glad our characters don't require food and water!

Default Calculate Distance

So I was in Khun, preparing to head out Rigel. But the gal-map can't give me a range or route. I wanted to know how far away it is though!

Fortunately, I do know how to calculate the distance between two points in 3D space. The formula is:

Square Root of (sqr(X1-X2) + sqr(Y1 - Y2) + sqr(Z1 - Z2))

Co-ords of Rigel are: 390, -361, -690
Co-ords of Khun are: -170, 15, -56

So we start with X1-X2 squared, which is 313,600
Y1 - Y2 squared which is 141,376
Z1 - Z2 sqr 401,956

Added together they equal 856,932

The square root of that is 925.71 LY

So there you are! That's how to manually calculate how far a system if if the gal-map won't do it for you. I got those co-ords from the gal-map.

Have any of you CMDRs signed up for the Distant Worlds 2 Expedition? I have, we leave on Sunday.

The fleet (currently over 7000 CMDRs have signed up) will leave the bubble and fly towards the galactic core, somewhere along the way there will be a mining Community Goal, which if successful, will lead to the construction of a space station in a system neighbouring Sagittarius A*. There will be a second mining CG, which will take place at Way-point 7 which will be that station and will decide what services it will offer.

The fleet will then continue on to Beagle Point on the far edge of the galaxy before beginning the return leg.

Each way point will be about 5000LY apart and are announced weekly so for a ship with about 30-40 LY range it'd take about 2 hours a week to keep up with the fleet. Of course the idea is to spend any extra time to meander around and explore.

It'll take about 20 weeks to reach BP and about the same to return to the bubble.

I just bought an Asp Explorer and have it tuned to jump about 36 LY now. So I'm going to take a second crack at getting to Rigel.

I'm not much of one for running with a pack.

If have signed up for it and my explorer Cutter with a 50ly range is already parked in the starting system.

So yesterday I was driving around on a planet looking for germanium when I came across a crashed ship. There were two occupied escape pods. I did my first rescue! I never expected to find that.

I got my Asp Explorer upgraded as much as I can and it can now jump just over 40 ly. It was able to plot a route to Rigel, so I'm off to see that later today.

Cmdr Kennathus here. Playing solo mode (since the game has a high learning curve; or just me). I can't get some routes to plot.

Depends on the route you're trying to plot. There are a number of factors which come into play, the main ones being jump distance vs FSD jump capacity, routes over 20,000ly, and restricted systems. I've also had it where I searched to a system and it moved there in the map but highlighted a system on the other side of the bubble. I then had to manually select the system to plot the route.

I am currently working on my Federation rank so I can get a permit for Sol. Just got promoted to Recruit last night!

Oh, so it was your trip that kicked me out of my game Sunday night!

This is my current ship, the Universal Joint. It's an Asp Explorer currently capable of 40 to 45 ly jumps, depending on the load.
