Second lesson of win10, lock all network shares and disable full access or it will delete anything it THINKS is bad. Including anything with the word KEY or GEN. Lost a list of software keys and licenses I use for copy paste vs reading type on a crapload of dvds and cds i cannot even use on most pcs here. Also likely lost some images and files, god only knows as I had close to 6tb of shared folders. Still have not found what it is that is doing this to stop it so I might have wasted 1500usd on a pc I cannot connect up to my network for fear of it running amuck in a worse fashion than any VIRUS or Mallware I have ever had on a system INCLUDING blaster.

Can clearly say it is not Storage sense, and not defender as all of that bullshit is turned off. Installing winrar and amd drivers was enough to turn that crap off. Hell just copying the exe files was annoying enough.

Well sadly if you want hardware newer than a intel 6 series cpu your stuck with it. Want anything faster than a 500mbps ssd, win10. Want drivers that wont crap on you or act all strange, win10. Want anything amd or related to most new hdw. . . . win10. Most stuff will not work at all in win8, more so than win7 but I have run into a lot of issues of late and some are ones that are creeping into win7 without me doing anything. Apps that ran for decades with mo issue in the last year have started acting up or wont install in new installs of win7. Go fig. MS since vista or was it some ver of NT has had backdoor access to turn off things and update crap. So I do not doubt they are doing crap to stop people using win7 and 8.

Atm the last post is the one HUGE NO NO in my book deleting files on the fly without notice or permission. Doing so over the network has me considering sending everything back to amazon. If not eating the costs and throwing it all out.

OK sucks but I think I got it by disabling defender completely, did not want to but no way in hell do I approve of anything auto deleting shit without permission. EXP if it is just a txt file with Software_keys.txt. Thank god I have multiple copies of this or I would spend hours redoing it. Also deleted some images in my wallpapers dir on that share too. gen_yamato-2160.jpg and a few others that shared typical wares names in the file name. Real bullshit.

other than constantly finding WTFH things to turn off, I mean it acts worse than my phone. Wanting location, downloading MAPS and other crap. The only real nasties I have found is that blocking of files and annoyance of having to unblock each file or deal with code in powershell. Had to in the end change a group edit setting, basicly caving into the naghell and turning off a security feature. And this deleting files it thinks are bad cause of a name or words in the file. Sucks I have to remove sources of security I enjoyed in win7 and win8 and were benign and did crap in the background but sheesh.

Oh maybe the odd login screen/homepage foolery is another. I got this landscape anime image stuck there now and it wont change to anything else! It is more of a bug I think.
Trust though with my work files is waning though. Can I really trust it with my 3d files? My art archives? a open network of fileshares. I mean it is a real PITA to have to get up and move watched shows or something I am accessing over the network to a read dir or elsewhere. But if I have to do that to keep a rouge os from deleting shit it thinks is best deleted on me well FF****.

Oh yeah taskmanager is $HIT. Well it was in win8, bloody hated it in win8 and win10 is just as bad. Wall of mess you have to sort through and no matter what sorting it is in stuff bounces around a lot so selecting a service to kill is downright annoying at times. EXP when it is a failing installer and it is looping other exe in a attempt to finish what it is doing and having problems because the os keep deleting it or blocking it!

OH LINUX if you only had abilities to run wot I want and not be a PITFA and act like something worse than win3.11. I am not going back to writing INI files or custom DLLs

Does not help I almost tossed all the cats into a crate for a trip down to happy tails, spend hours cleaning piss out of the carpet for the 5th time and everything reaks of cat piss to me. I think one of these enzyme cleaners has the same smell so I cannot tell anymore. I love the animals but ugh, I hate mammal piss. I clean the 4 litter boxes at least every day cause of it.

Busy here attempting to get something decent out of Vray.
Boy aircooler suck! WHIRRRRRR and 81c. . . .
first go had hope except the huge white thing in the sky that was the light I used. . .

latter attempts are a bit meh, slots and settings are the same but results are far from it. Does not help I am using 2019 and stock set up so everything is awkward. Attempting atm to get my hdri back in render but all I do and noting happens. Getting subtle hull stuff is well the render says plenty on that front HAH

Might have to reinstall max as I think I deselected some options as all the tut stuff is missing as well as scene files max comes with. Might have disabled something when I thought it was junk extra baggage for software I do not use. :SHRUG

Also thinking of installing 17 to gain access to MR even if it is crap to test render times and as a way to ease into it but then again it could be too much of a way to ease back into using it. -_-. need to move on I think but vray eliminates a lot of the ways I got used to working least in the rendering and lighting sides of things. Materials and the like the UI is very much the same and it is able to use the standard shaders such as COMPOSITE that arnold is just divorced from.

anyhow renders are me just banging away and clicking things vs using any tuts to figure out what some of the terms mean in it.

Well here is another go after figuring out hdri stuff and still fighting exposure and shadows/contrast/ambient. Having to resort to the auto exp setting in the renderer, while results look good they suck because if I select a section of the render it will have a different level of contrast and ambient light. Because well it auto exposes for what is rendered not the entire scene. So need to fix that. As for materials I think I found a way to convert my MR stuff to vray then I can fine tune.

I also do not get more than half the render time as it seems to not be improving the render at all. ATM it is some overall updating vs a bucket, but this is roughly whatever vray had set up from the start except anything I mucked with so there might be better settings I have yet to find.

Think I picked up something while cleaning that cat piss that or from pulling the carpet and finding all sorts of GROSS underneath, so I need to go lay down and give this a rest.

vray has some neat tools like in viewport rendering and lq renders in viewport. Sadly gpu render is totally ****ing useless as it is CUDA only. More reasons to sadly retire this 570. Though I dunno probably pushing the 3900x will get me output much faster than a 2060 or maybe if I am a prick a 2070. Real draw back is the same with MR at times and with arnold. Viewports are clearly made for some other tool. Often in vray atm it is blown out or atm everything is translucentish, It is like Xray mode. Go fig.

Auto saves sadly are just annoyingly slow and well, annoying. Oh well. Issue is I will once things get moved not have a server that keeps bluescreening every 5 hours. Probably in 8 to 10 hrs I might have more to show.

Sounds like you're having a right nightmare MKF, hope you get sorted fella, nothing worse than PC problems when trying to be creative.

I had to ditch my old PC last year and forked out for a RTX2080 OC - absolute beast for gaming, utter crap for Lightwave, no discernable difference over the old GTX 780Ti

Your work , as always, is inspiring.

Well started again in converting this thing. Having a real issue with the lights and stuff as I cannot get the contrast I want.

Current render just has main hull applied to a few parts not all of it. The Vray converter is a bit useless as it leaves all my MR materials alone. Also found the glow/lum stuff is incompatible so I need to find a replacement. (hopefully there is one) Looks like a long haul of conversion as I have not found a global way to swap materials. I think some of my issues is light object dia, as the lights I need to make them huge or I end up with ridiculous strength settings. Maybe you should have large ones. Anyhow this results in soft shadows. So this might be part of the issue. Again I am guessing it is just fettling.

Also still have not found a way to render my logo background behind the ship in vray. I know I can set it in the hdri but then it uses it as a environment. With MR I had the option to set the image as a background replacement and it would not be seen by objects in scene.

It is nice these take like 1min to render!

Ok fettled a bit more so old images I was gonna post got tossed out for these. To note I really have not messed with the render set up itself. I am mostly screwing around with exposure settings etc. I am though having to avoid the Vray exposure as it makes viewports utterly useless, blows out to white. Using physical camera atm.
Other thing is white balance seems backwards. What I expect to be warm is cold or BLUE and what I expect to be blue like SUNLIGHT, is warmer. Shrug? Ended up turning off auto white balance too as it was going all over depending on what is in the render. I loath auto-inconsistent settings.

Stuff is also super whack with viewports vs cameras. Render in perspective it seems to ignore a lot of settings and sets an entirely different baseline for the settings. Render off a camera and it is like a whole nother scene. EG the images above are all through perspective view. Add a camera and your looking at a really dim scene. So I dunno PITA to have to render through a camera gizmo as I have to move that crap around vs just roll through the perspective view I am using while editing.

OK, found a tickbox. . . . . . . no decay. Well derp. So now I am screwing with the camera to match perspective to some degree and getting better results in what I expect of the camera settings. EG iso, fstop, and shutter. Still not happy with the exposure control settings as that is all turned off atm. So I will have to mess about with that later on as it is late.

New setup is always a PITA. I always feel like I just got it all settled in and out comes a new update for the OS or the APP.

Yeah I mean I was on the ball back in the XP and early win7 days but when you can sport the same OS install for over 8years now you kinda forget where all those custom settings are. Still pulling my hair out attempting to remember where the timing settings for the annoying tool tips are. You cannot disable the ones that show up over icon tools but there is a timing setting that helps avoid the tooltip blocking your click. So often I click and think I have a tool and I do not. wasted time and frustration. AUGH lol would think since max 2010 they would have fixed this crap. Or at least made one place to turn off al the tooltips at. ATM there are 2 places and none relate to most of the really annoying tooltips. . . sigh.

hehe going from 4 to 12. . . . . 30min renders to 1min ones. Though that is dumbed up mental ray vs vray.

I really gotta get this on water though fan ramp ups are so loud. makes me remember the old AMD XP days and those hairdryer thermaltake fans that could decapitate a rat. Friend got his finger in one, down to the bone. Anyhow it only gets up to 74c on the longer renders with the glow box fan it came with but heh.

Only other suck is the mobo you think ASUS would have improved fancontrol but no, each ehader does something odd and all the ones in the uefi are all the screwy ones EG aio header pump header high amp etc. So all my fans go at various speeds vs a unified one. So I need to spend on stupid hubs. Heck even with the lame AI suite it does not id all the fans or have the same config abilities for them! ugh. Anyhow thinking of going open loop as all the new AIOs seem to have a 3~5yr lifespan. Least the open loop the parts can be changed out or tubing replaced and refilled. Painful outlay though as it would be something like 350usd.

Can't fault this Noctua NH-D15 dual fan, my long render temps max @65 degrees c. Not very noisy either, specially wearin' the cans listening to bangin' techno rofl

Anyway, if render times are down that's a win

Yeah I gave up the mega air coolers when they started weighing more than the rest of the computer >_> I do run all their redux fans lately.

Been debating on going with a noctua for my media pc but that thing is STILL not in a proper case. Do not want to get a cooler and have it not fit later on. But I do not want to get a low profile cooler if I can fit a larger one.

I have a feeling even on water with a large thick radiator this cpu will still ride about in the mid 60s. What I wish is if this wraith used a 120mm fan vs the 90mm or whatever it is. What I like about water is the heat ramps up slowly.

UPDATE:
Messing with bussards and warp grids. having to relearn how transparent glass and translucent mats work in vray. Close not quite there yet.
Vray lum surfacing I again have a shader and a material type to choose from. They have more options and doo seem to spill more than anything MR had.

Ok I think I got the warp grills where I want, now I need to fix the bussards as now they look like slightly tinted glass.

Oh yeah, for anyone having multiple monitors not in landscape EG lined up horz from left to right and have the mouse or window hang up on transitioning from display to display you need to sit down put your face really close and adjust the display to have no GAPS. Default they SNAP and leave a gap. In the past this just was part of how it "looked" now though it denotes a barrier of sorts. So if you go really fast there is no barrier if you go slowly though it hangs up the cursor or windows you might be dragging around. It has nothing to do with snaps or any of the features that deal with the surrounds of displays. See image.

Note gap between mon 1 and the other 2, this is that default snap gap. 2 and 3 is what you need to do to avoid that hang up issue. And because it has a snap to you really have to move it about to get it to work. Those with nvidia can use the control panel for nvidia to set up and it automatically works right. AMD just opens the OS based monitor page. So yeah.

Also extra how the system looks atm, fans are not exactly where I wanted them but the amd cooler forced me to have the video card lower down so I was short by 3mm clearance for the fans to be on the bottom. Also fuzzy cause all the clingfilm is still on the glass for now as I have yet to bang apart the rack to adjust the shelves to get the pc in it's proper home vs a old 50s beatup phone stand.

I have a three monitor display for work and have noticed exactly what you describe. Going to do an adjustment on it and see what happens. Good tip.

Well think the nacelles are done, moved on to the upper bridge and matching up surfaces is MEH YUCK. Working interiors and setting up new lights in them. Kinda like the light material in vray. Does lengthen the render times as it takes a bit to get the noise out.

Still fighting a bit with the AO tool in v-ray, just cannot get it to scale out as well as samples show or as much as the one in max did.
https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...p+%7C+VRayDirt
Loads of mr materials still in the scene. Also conference room clearly shows I need to set up more light fixtures.

Slowly getting a long with the resurfacing of things. YUCK. Also I need to see what is likely up with things as I am having a hell of a time matching things up in editor and what not vs what I get in render. It reminds me of the old days where the samples never matched. I am running my typical 2.2 gamma. One thing i noticed is my grayscale color picker the gradient does not seem consistant it is like compressed. So maybe ther eis some setting somewhere that is off.
Hence some parts are really brown and I still have issues with the AO shader even showing as being ON at all.

Maybe this is something to do with vray camera VS perspective view? I know other software had odd things like that. LW comes to mind for some effect.

Also I really REALLY have a feeling I will ALWAYS have some mental Ray material SOMEWHERE on this ship. Finding it all and applying it all ugh. That and max has always had a limited material slot in the editor so your sorta stuck swapping them out and if your not careful itll COPY materials instead of referring to the existing ones. So if you make changes to one it wont affect the others of that same material.

Still not too happy with the hdri either, note how dark all the silver bits are. So reflection isnt there while ambient is too strong it seems. Likely all of this is my lack of knowing how to set things up etc.

MKF, any chance of getting some nice ortho's of the Mughi (with and without the Cargo pods), Onimaru and Balmung? I've seen for the Mughi (but all on one image so I can't truly check her out) but no so much on the others.

The only likely place is my blog and wip blog. Older stuff if not here on host is gone, unless someone reposted them elsewhere without permission. Links to blog are in my sig. Just use the search tool for trek stuff. Most likely they will appear as part of a series post. EG Trekshiporama, which is old in of itself but contains a lot of them.

I rarely do orthos anymore as they are just misused.

ATM almost all the old models are mothballed for now until I get around to setting up a database and converting them all. I just moved up to 2019 in max and using v-ray which while close to Mental Ray means all of those old ships will not render properly.
