Wow, a lot of negativity here.

"Why don't they just create a new series?"
Because the Star Trek brand has a huge amount of built-in brand recognition.

"It doesn't look like 'The Cage' era design-wise."
Let's face it, modern technology caught up with and surpassed the look of Star Trek a long time ago. A new series set in the 23rd century that looks like it was filmed in 1964 would be laughed off the air.

I'm with Starbase1 on this one. Tell us a good story, with good acting and good production values. I for one can't wait until this airs.

True. But you can modernize the look of TOS without drastically altering the style. A big part of why ST:TOS doesn't look "futuristic" any longer is the 1960's style lighting, camera work and let's face it, the 60's hairstyles.

Fans produce TOS based films with faithful reproductions of the sets and props and they look fine. There's a new one in production set int the time when Earth had it's own ships separate from the UFP. Their tech looks even more dated than TOS or Enterprise but it still works as a future time period.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree. I also think this will fail because of the CBS All Access thing. I've never paid to watch a Star Trek series before and I'm not now. As for the look, I think they should have placed it in the Kelvin (JJprise) timeline, it looks like those movies do anyway plus it has too many actors involved, the Klingons look nothing like Klingons, the show has been delayed twice because of staff leaving and it should be free!

The more news i get of this the less i think im going to like it. The transporter looks to steampunk and whats with the body armour. I think the deviations are becoming to much now.

It does look great. Their VFX shots are quite impressive so far.

so there is a new trailer, and It now says its a Netflix original, not CBS original? part of the delay maybe, perhaps Netflix actually caused the changes in production, being as there home for things like stranger things could be a good thing, or maybe just nothing?

It's only on CBS in the US, Netflix is distributing it in all other countries. I think it's some kind of co-production thing. Which is why when I click on your like here in Eagleland, I just get a frowny-face saying the video isn't authorized in my country.

Here's a link to the American trailer, which is almost certainly the same as the international version above except for the Netflix/CBS part.

In Canada I can't access either the European or American links. You'd think we'd be past region locking at this point.

You know, between the "Challenge your preconceptions" quote in this and... a considerable amount of Beyond, Enterprise is getting a lot of love for such a little-regarded show. The reference in this trailer isn't even from the good half of the show!

Probably helps when it's the one series common to both timelines. What a twist of fate for the "show that killed Trek."

They released a new trailer today that shows more of the ships and a lot of f/x including the new Harry Mudd. This show is just trying to hard, even if it was going to be on regular television it would fail. BTW, if you read the article you will not like the comments, they have some religious nutcase posting Bible verses and ranting about homosexuality. I go there to read about Star Trek not homophobic Bible thumpers.

Please don't get me wrong. I LOVE Star Trek. It's been part of my life since I was a little kid in the early 70s. But this trailer just doesn't get me fired up. If anything I'll FF through the talking and watch the space shots.

But I had to laugh at the 'I can sense the coming of death. I can sense it now.' fade to black. Full screen text popup 'Coming Soon'

Aye Aye Captain.

I will admit that I like the new ship except that it doesn't fit in the timeline.

It looks a bit more promising with the new trailer. It certainly seems to have a higher production standard than any Trek series to date.

Good grief, that's going the full 100% Shatner in the cheesy dialogue!

Reminds me of the great "Zombo" from 2000 AD.

I was thinking Saber class but the Centaur looks similar, this reminds me of how the NX-01 looked like the Alkira on ST Enterprise.

Some of the plot was revealed from the book description on Amazon,

Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.

She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea.

As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so, she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life—until now.

This novel ("Desperate Hours" by David Mack) is set about a year before the Discovery pilot (and about a year after "The Cage"). There's speculation that the man she's avoiding is Spock, but that's just a guess. Mack also mentioned on Twitter that the title is more literal than you'd think, and the story takes place within a day or so.

There's another DSC novel coming out early next year (by Dayton Ward), and that's the book set ten years prior to the show. Nothing else has been revealed about that one.

There's also a four-issue comic-book miniseries about the backstory of the main Klingon character. There'll be other comics after that, as well, but they'll also be side- and back-stories, not other adventures set during the run of the show.

A couple test shots of an intermediate version of the Discovery have been released. It's more polished than the one from the Comic-Con teaser last year (but what wouldn't be,) though it's also got some notable differences from the final ship (it hasn't had the cutouts added in the saucer). http://ncc-1031.com/news/test-footag...very-surfaces/
