Default Space - Interstellar Solar Sail.

As the customer has put the video on YouTube, I can share it with IAAA members!
I much prefer Vimeo, not least for the video quality, but what the heck...

The project visualises a serious design for a type of Solar Sail known as a heliogyro, which spins out extended blades. The nastiest part was getting the deployment animations right, as it unpacks from something that fits tidily into a Falcon 9 fairing, to something kilometres across. By combining this with a VASIMR engine, and getting well inside the orbit of Mercury, it gets to a speed where it reaches Alpha Centauri in a couple of thousand years, or better.

As it would be the fastest thing ever built, I think it's also a natural for deep space missions, such as the Thousand AU mission, or Kuiper belt missions, or heading to the Sun's gravitational focus.

I also did the soundtrack.

Nick

That's an outstanding video Nick! This is such an intriguing design. I also like the idea of putting people's photos on the blades.

Thanks Rigel, Graham. It was easily the most demanding animation I have ever attempted. A really cool concept too, which as far as I can see is really credible too.
