Well, it's finished as much as I can do for now. There's so much more I would have like to have done but I just ran completely out of time and expertise. I will probably work on this long after this contest. Like many of you I enjoyed this a lot and learned a lot in the process. Thanks for watching and good luck to all of you!

Overall, it looks great Bob. The still is a nice composite.

In the animation (for future reference mind you) while it's hovering and turning, I think the wings should tilt towards the inside of the turn; in this case, to the port rather than the starboard. Leaning starboard, the thrust would push her around to the starboard.

Well, now that the deadline for this is past and it's a continuing project I am trying to finish it up before moviing on. I decided I needed to do a proper scene and have started this. Posting it now becuase at this point I have completely run out of ideas to improve it. Time to give the brain a rest and come back fresh.

Its a good start Bob, although I think the rippled texture is a little harsh at the moment although that might change with a different lighting set up to match the shadow strength....

Perhaps keep the sand from the hills on the floor plane, stick in some brown / yellow ground fog to simulate some kicked up sand and graduate the sky from the fog colour to a washed out blue, to simulate an approaching dust storm...

Just a few ideas in my head, but either way I'll be interested to see how this turns out

Where did you get the BG for the 1600 resolution pic?

Good question now, I believe it was from the US Gov military site. It had three F-15's in the pic and I revamped the pic for a backdrop.

Thanks Lee, the next version will be quite different as it turns out. Nothing to post just yet but it's already completely different.

Well actually, here's a fresh render and now is as good a time as any to get some feedback. LIke I said, completely revamped.

You have some weirdness at the bottom left of the pic. It looks like the cloning is a bit of as the dune ripple does not line up. It could just be a display error though at this end.

I like the terrain, but your sky does not fit the camera angle IMHO. You need to find a shot similar in style and layout, to this one. It gives a better sense of size and distance.

You could even use this one, with some subtle additions to your terrain, to hide the green trees and red barn.

But definitely a promising start.

Hmmm. No luck so far. I'll try searching under F-15.

Well, a lot of help later, this is where I think the scene will sit. At this point I am ready to bring the model in and start working out the animation. I have lots to learn here, weapons firing, dust/sand being kicked up by the jets and etc. But I am happy enough with the scene to get started.

I think the backdrop is much improved there Bob..... Good stuff. Though the clouds as they get to the horizon line don't seem to be at the right angle almost as if the sky was dropped down a touch...

Otherwise though, this looks really cool

Personally, I liked the sky better the way it was so I'll compromise. I like light blue with the sand and this is not quite the perspective you guys are clamering for but close enough to still alow me the light blue.

Been fussing around with a motion test for the new animation and thought I would post this since I am not going to work on it anymore this evening. For a preview it's a little larger than I has hoped on. I have a problem with the rig in that the nose gun has disappeared in renders which I need to sort out and there's also a texture problem on the missle pods to point out the obvious. There are no effects yet, just working on the motion and once I have that in the bag I'll start on effects.

Overall, the movement is not bad. As the engines start to rotate, I would expect the vehicle to pull its nose up to use drag to help slow itself down, much like a helicopter does. Also, I would expect some side to side wobble as it rotates. Then, in the pull away, I would expect it to angle the nose up a little quicker, then rotate the engines once the climb is well under way (I'm thinking of how the Harrier does it).
