Cool Stargate - Stargate Kawoosh

Hey guys,

looooooong time no see. It's been busy with non 3d stuff. But in between I did some stuff here and there.

After years of on and off tweaking, I finalized the Kawoosh animation. It's all done in LightWave 2018 using a complex nodal displacement setup, with some post processing in After Effects.

It's the very same principle as in the breakdown video I did years ago. The secret lies in tweaking the displacement until it looks and animates like a water surface. The rest is created by reflections of a proper background image, and a luminous surface behind the event horizon.

Born to be WILDE!

Love it. I need to take another whack at the kawoosh with the new volumetric (not to mention resurfacing the puddle and gate for PBR. And probably remodeling the gate, I've learned a lot since I made my version two, and I could use instancing to really make the most of all that recessed detail...). One idea I had to build on your technique was to set up the poly flow of the morphs so the points expand out from the center, to help get that pressure-wave effect. I'm just not sure how to hand off in series, or if there's some other way to get the surface to kawoosh to expand out as it extends.

Well hello there, Mr. Wilde!

I never watched Stargate (other than the original movie). But this looks very cool.
Those who say it can't be done,
should stop interrupting those of us who are busy doing it!

Other Projects

The Universal Joint
Beechcraft 2000 airplane
LadyBug (Firefly class freighter)
