Default A Bump in the Road!

Thanks TrekMD! - Glad you're enjoying this... I am too

I was so close to my deadline of “a day or two” and then… shortly after I installed the whole facility into the belly of the Enterprise-D, I identified a significant loss of relationship between the nicely even spaced decks of what I had modelled versus the much more irregular deck spacing that’s implied by the rows of windows on the secondary hull. For the most part, decks 40 to 42 lined up with the window layout on the secondary hull however the closer you ascended to deck 30, the more out of whack those decks were. My Main Engineering level wound up on deck 35 (all the fans know this should be deck 36) and my deck 30 was punching well into deck 29.

I get that all of this is right in the centre of the ship and so nobody would ever know unless they investigated the final model for flaws, but I just couldn’t settle on leaving this as is without at least attempting to harmonise things and redefine some proportions, if only subtly. – I basically settled for reducing the ceiling height of the antimatter pod facility a tiny bit, though that did require redefining the proportions of the antimatter pods and then reduced the overall scale of the warp core tunnel part of the model (warp core and all) to preserve its proportions.

And all this after I smugly reported zero alignment issues, which was absolutely 99.9999% true for X and Z… All this nonsense has been Y’s fault! Irritatingly, subtle though the alterations have been, I preferred they way it all looked before but... what can ya do?

I've been rendering constantly so I have more to show, perhaps by the end of the day!

Default Warp Core Ejection

Eject the warp core: How many times did Geordi threaten to perform that manoeuvre? ...and never did! If you think about it, in the face of certain destruction, the Enterprise blew up more often than it was saved by the very safety system that was engineered into the ship to prevent such a catastrophe. - Don't get me wrong, it was all fun telly all the same!

Fortunately for Pro9's Enterprise-D, this edition of the ship will always have this option in its toolkit

Default Antimatter Pod Ejection System

...and some more poses to illustrate how the ship gets rid of its antimatter.

I was thinking that in anticipation of an emergency situation requiring this manoeuvre, the aft antimatter pods could be smart enough to transfer whatever fuel they were carrying to the forward most pods, thus cutting down the number of pods that ultimately had to be physically ejected from the ship.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will note that only the forward pods are what you might call "hero models"; all the subsequent ones were simplified during the poly reduction exercise.

Default Living Quarters -- Troi

Quite a few months since I posted my last chapter. Still been very much on it though.

I've been modelling the larger of the two sets that were used to provide living quarters on the show, specifically the living spaces for Picard, Riker and Troi. The exercise was entertaining enough but I was a little handicapped by the lack of some key references. Aside from a couple of low res QTVR files and a library of amazing HD screen stills, the floor plan sketches I keep in my archive are about as crude as you can get; rendered as a line drawing of the sets perimeter and that is all. This repeatedly caused me problems and I felt the need to restart the model twice because I just couldn't get the proportions looking right. - Even with version 3, I think the scaling is a little off. But I achieved some sort of conclusion eventually...

This was interesting: According to the set plans, this set was an open plan room that could be partitioned off into smaller rooms; up to five if necessary. The washrooms at either end of the set however couldn't have been permanent rooms as they appear to occupy the corridor spaces for the adjacent sets outside; the production crew must have had to assemble them everytime they needed to shoot scenes in/near them and then collapse them again when they weren't needed. My virtual set boasts the full seven partitionable zones (oh yes! ).

The things that cost me the most time (and polys) on this set of models was in the reproduction of all (well, nearly all!) of the character's stuff, their displays, their ornaments, their furniture, their books (why does Picard have to read so much! ) and my god, their plants! The materials list in the surface editor goes on for miles!

Other things to think about during this exercise: Has anyone ever noticed that Picard doesn't have a food replicator in his quarters? - Been watching Next Gen. since I was a teenager and never noticed. There is also next to no space offered for things like bedding or even clothing! And no bath or shower until... yes, in the episode "Genesis" we learned what a 24th Century bath on the Enterprise looks like and that Troi had one; no sign of a toilet though!
And why are there so many objects and ornaments in these rooms? The Enterprise is getting thrown about by anomalies and hostile ships several times a year; all that stuff is going to be on the floor. - If you served on that ship you would either want very little in the way of ornaments or you would need specific storage/mounting solutions applied to everything.
