It's been a few months so it must be time to tinker with this one again

So, since last update I decided to try to make the surface more interesting by adding modelled panels to it, I've only done the ones on the armour above the mid line so far as they are mind bendingly tedious to do as the surface is actually slightly twisted. They're starting to look how I wanted them to.

I've also decided to have a go at modelling some decent nurnies in the spaces above the hanger entrance.

So this is where I pick it up today, let's see how far I get before I blow a fuse with LightWave again...

Hooray! Wonderful to see this one moving again!

Come on Tony, this has the potential to be the best B5 model ever made!

Some ideas for the first equipment bay, As you can probably tell I raided a few of my other WIPs to borrow some of the bits.

Cheers guys.

The poly count is over a million for the bow section so far and will go higher but I'm not too worried as there are / will be repeating elements with the rest of the ship and I intend to use instancing a lot, so in practice it won't be so bad (I hope).

That looks great Tony. I wouldn't go any further than that. You could even thin it out a bit and it would still look great.

I tend to agree with Rigel here--the work here is awesome and it looks great, but I also think that in some ways less would be more.

Work in progress it may be, but there are dam few finished renders that end up so impressive.

This is the mesh you were born to make!

Great ship, love the name too.

You know you probably have more polys on your one ship than they used in the entire series!

Thanks Nick, it's something of a labour of love, this has always been one of my favourite ship designs.

I was listening to War of the Worlds and thought the name appropriate

Yeah my poly count is well and truly out of control, once I finish building the bow I will go on a bit of a major poly cull when I break it down into pieces for instancing.

I think the whole ship model on the series was something like 250000 polys, just this bit of the bow is over 1200000 but I know I can get it down a lot so I'm not too worried at the moment.

I think the Thunderchild bit is my favourite part of the WOTW musical.

I am surprised they were able to get a ship with that many polys animated back in the 90s, they must have been straining their render farms to the limits.

Now that I'm unemployed again I have some time to work on this a bit more...

I redid the top details, I was never really happy with the things that looked like tower cranes and I wanted to make the two top antennae look more like warship masts.

Interesting design change. Asthetically speaking, it makes the ship look less linear, but from a space physics point of view it would work. There's no need to make this vessel aerodynamic, and it's not like you'd be blocking a docking port either.

I've really been struggling to get inspiration for any 3D lately so I decided to see what this thing in it's current (highly unfinished) state looked like in motion, in the hope that it would spur me on to work on it again...

(Best viewed in HD).

I quite like how it looks so far, even with YouTube's compression.

Gorgeous!

The rotating section needs the alternating running lights, though.
