Default Surface Baking Camera... How to?

Surface Baking Camera How to question..

OK, its been awhile, sense i used the Baking surface camera...

How does one set it up, so it does not render the shadows ?? or the dark side of the object..??

Unless you're baking in the light as well, which is about the only time I use the baking feature.

Octane, have a Pole object that I want to texture..

finally found the help file, turn all lights off, color to black, ambient to 100 etc etc
and render out image...the LW help file had a few hickups ...

I need to UN-install explorer its a pain in the rear half the time..

The Pole texture, at least it fast...to render out

and thought I would try the Surface baker Camera, was trying to build the texture using the nodes but was not getting any good results, they said I could use the IFW2 nodes and plug them into the octane nodes but it was not working, probably wasn't doing it right..

Still battling with the nodel knowledge of understanding them..

I wish the would write a book or make up a few hundred presets so people could
tear them apart to see how the are used..

Need to start writting down how many times LW crashes.. Some days no problems, somedays crash, crash, crash, ........

But I save everything every other minute so i never really loose everything,
But yesterday I had Octane IPR open using both cards, and the puter would not respond, had to do a "Push Reset Button" hate to do it.. but had to...

After reboot, no network responding, can't reconnect to network, bla bla bla
and a few other things where messed up...
Stupid M$ Windows... dam....
Had to shut everything down, and reboot all the Network Storage units and Nodes.
and Modem, Router.. what a pain M$ is sometimes .... gosh darn it...

Yeh, I don't have IFW2, but have been getting Normal LW textures and procedurals to work with Octane Textures. It's complicated, but words.

Ya, there is not much documentation, examples of setups... to explain what we can and can not hook up to the nodes...

More examples would be nice..

Have you visited the Lightwave Materials thread I started at OTOY lately. There are some really nice materials getting posted there.

Just noticed this, the only problem I had with baking surfaces was the resolution, I never found a way to up the resolution so they just didn't hold up to hi-res. Don't know if that's accurate or not since I shelved them and went back to normal mapping.

I don't understand the problem with baking resolution - surely you just render to a larger image?

I've found baking to be painless in general, though I have not tried baking normals.

I've used it with IFW in several different ways, for example to bake the panels so the surfaces work for someone who does not have ifw2, or to bake procedurals (including IFW) so I can then overlay decals and the like onto the maps.

I generally have ambient up to 100% and all other lights off, and rely on lighting in the final scene for any occlusion type effects. Or for occlusion type effects baking, set the background to pure white and all lights off, ambient light at zero.

About the only thing that can get messy is baking a bump map, where I generally change the colours, (for example, making panels have a white surface and black gutter, or making grime and rust dark on white tiles for a spec map)

This. No matter what software I'm in, I still struggle with node editors. I know they're extremely powerful, but I tend to start plugging in this or that and it doesn't do much, and I get frustrated.

Well, if anyone wants a bunch of examples (for Lightwave) there's always preset central:
http://www.presetcentral.com/

As for nodes, I find I can generally make my own node networks easily enough once I really understand what I want to do, (just adding items a bitata time works for me, particularly with VPR preview on), though I do struggle to understand what other people have come up with.

I often want to connect nodes BETWEEN surfaces though... For example, if different surfaces on the same blue object use the same shade of blue, it would be a whole lot easier to adjust if that colour was defined in one place...
