Of course a woman can play the part.

Here's hoping Whittaker gets good stories to shine in. I don't think much of Chibnall's earlier Who stories but maybe with his own direction that'll change.

I'm not a Dr. Who fan. I watched it when it was Tom Baker but never really got into it.

I was just watching a commentary on Youtube about the 13th Doctor. That individual cited cases of other characters regenerating as female. He also mentioned that one of the recent Doctors actually patted himself to see if he was male or female.

So it doesn't strike me as odd that the Doctor could be a female. Hell, the Doctor could be an alien or anything else that he/she/it wanted to be. Time Lords are just that good, right?
Those who say it can't be done,
should stop interrupting those of us who are busy doing it!

In the Who universe, anything makes sense as a regeneration - woman / alien / no head etc, even ginger, but as a work of fiction the doctor has always been a man-child, irresponsible, flighty and sometimes cruel.

The 'make it up as I'm going along' idiot in a time machine / lonely God vibe doesn't work so well when translated to a woman. I think they'll have to write it carefully to account for the gender change - moving it away from what the doctor is / has been for so long, even before the reboot.

As ever, the results will speak for themselves next year.

As far as I can remember, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison's Doctor was far from "flighty". Their portrayal was more, "I know everything about everything. And I'm just going to slowly educate you." Tom Baker, was my favorite.

As for the Doctor *now* changing into a woman; yes, it was done with The Master, and a general in the episode where River Song died. I think it speaks more of the Times, with gender neutral issues, and such; back in the day, it would be unheard of gender swapping, but now-a-days its commonplace; They did it in BSG, with Boomer and Starbuck and Adm Cain. Yes it will take some getting used to, but if the story and character development is good you will not see them as a woman or a man, but the character.

I seem to recall "The Corsair" also being referred to as changing gender in "The Doctors Wife"

Tom Baker thought it should have been a woman that replaced him, so if anything this is overdue.

I was very happy with the news about the next Doctor being a woman, I think it's about time the Doctor isn't another white man. This will be very interesting to see how the Doctor changes
