ah ha ha ha! They're shooting it in Ontario, Canada but Ontario, Canada isn't allowed to watch the trailer.

I believe this tweet-embedded version of the trailer is region-free. https://twitter.com/startrekcbs/stat...61771685109760

youtube version of it, which might not be blocked as badly as those but who knows. Region lock is such bull$hit. It will likely spread over the day to other copy the video and add their BS at the end and repost it like that galaxy quest trailer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dxe_ugmIVM

probably not worth the effort IMHO.

I really think they should just start a new franchise.

eh that one might be US cancer too
netflix ver but I hear it is not the same video. Cant know myaelf cause well REGIONLOCK, sigh so 80s. . .

Okay, that looks pretty slick and well polished. Those were Klingons? Unh, yeah.

The ship still looks terrible.

The only real critique I have is this. It's 10 years before Kirk and the Enterprise and yet, uniforms, ship interiors, space suits and even the ship itself look more like they belong in the time frame of Next Gen or DS9. Enterprise did a better job of looking like older technology while still achieving a bigger budget production standard. This show certainly has the big budget production standard but misses the mark on looking like it's 10 years before the time of TOS.

^ What he said.

It looks like it might be worth a watch, but I'll look at it the same way I look at pretty much all of the series' since TOS: entertaining but certainly not Trek.

Even if it was good (which it doesn't look like it will be) I'm not paying CBS to watch it. I would rather watch the new Seth McFarland comedy making fun of Star Trek.

I really cant match these timelines and looks. Compare Enterprise, Discovery and Star Trek TOS.

I understand that of course if the TOS had had the budget and computer effects that modern shows have they would look allot more similar but at least Enterprise tried.

This trailer looks to JJPrise to me, i hope the show does well but im not convinced i want to watch it any more than i want to watch another JJPrise movie.

Also i dont care where the original idea for that ship comes from, to me its ugly. The original TOS Enterprise was no stunner but at least they had an excuse.

It's an interesting idea. If I were living in the US, I'd probably watch it (I doubt I'm gonna be able to in Japan). I kinda get the feeling that they've gotten bored with the original timeline, so they decided to stick with the JJ continuity, but as MKF said, they'd might as well start a new franchise instead. True, it's much riskier to create an entirely new IP, rather than reimagine an existing one, but labeling this "Star Trek" might backfire on them.

And yea, the Discovery looks silly. It's not a design that has stood up to the test of time, and it wasn't even used for what it was originally designed for.

The ship in the trailer isn't the Discovery. Sure we had that supposed look at the ship last year but we officially haven't seen the true Discovery yet.

Anyone outside the US can watch it on Netflix but if you live in the US you have to pay CBS All Access to watch it. They claim this is not the JJprise era but set in the prime universe ten years before TOS.

My bet is that there will be no "Discovery" spaceship. With all the hoopla about the ship design in the trailer, Paramount may have opted for a change of direction. The title will likely be a play on the noun - discovery: the action or process of discovering or being discovered. Just a feeling.

As to the the consistency of established canon for trek, I don't think Paramount cares, as long as the project makes money.

The ship in this trailer is the USS Shenzou, not the Discovery.

And I suppose I'm alone in being surprised at how good this looks, especially given the embarrassing teaser from last year. Good on them for trying something different.

I think if they wanted to try something different they should have made something other than Star Trek.
I'm all for new Sci-fi!
I would however like it if just once the people making the show respected it.

No. You're not alone. I love the design if the USS Shenzou. In fact I love most of the designs and concept art coming out of the show. I just am not sure how they're going to make this fit into a standard Trek timeline (if that even really matters at this point). If they try forcing it haphazardly into the previously established Trek universe they'll end up painting themselves into a corner.

I just want to see some good story-telling and decent visual effects. Look at the Expanse. Unbelievably well-written, dark and gritty. If they give that much love and attention to this new series I'll be happy.

I agree that the trailer looks good. The production values are certainly up there. I just don't think it looks 10 years older than Kirk's time is all. It would fit better in the Next Generation time frame.

I think Expanse is absolutely stunning.

Great writing, lots of shocks and twists along the way, and a long term story arc, rather than random episodes. Hard SF, no warps or ray guns. Characters with depth and complex motives, no white hats vs black hats

And with Shohreh Aghdashloo's character, we have the strongest female character since Mira Furlan's Delenn.

A prime candidate for the best DSF series ever, and that's not something I say lightly.

Nick

Saying this very quietly!

What about the writing? Have they got great writers lined up?

Very disappointed that no-one else in this thread seems to think that's the key factor.

My expectations for Star Trek producers caring about good writing went away with Enterprise.

In fact, one of the only things we knew about Discovery for a long time was it's all-star team of writers and producers, which currently includes Nicholas Meyer (TWOK/TUC), Kirsten Beyer (the Voyager novel relaunch), and Joe Menosky (veteran Trek writer, who wrote many episodes, including "Darmok"). And, while he's had to step back to focus on his other shows, the whole thing was kicked off by Bryan Fuller, who got his start on Trek and went on to produce several acclaimed shows like "Dead Like Me," "Hannibal," and the new "American Gods" adaptaion.

Enterprise was garbage, and I'd put money on this new series not lasting more than 2 seasons....I certainly won't be watching it - trailer has nice CG but it ends there.
