You can easily see the potential of it from the test render. A lot of work though, glad it's you and not me.

Thanks guys.
A bit more. Getting the back yard together has been more work than first anticipated.

On a recent Youtube series video there was an interview with Doug Trumbull, and in it he mentioned some stuff about filming the miniatures in Close Encounters. In order for the lights to get the appropriate flare and scale they had tons of smoke in the room, so thick that you couldn't see someone a few feet away. I think that explains why looking at these renders the lights look great, yet the model also looks too brightly lit. I think to get it to look like the movie would require quite a bit of fiddling and tweaking.

That could be done by having the visible lights not affect the model (in the light properties under Objects check to exclude the UFO) then light the mother ship with the scene lights. You still have the nice, visible flares but more control over the lighting of the ship.

This is going to sound stupid - but is there any reason not to try the same thing in 3D? In other words, why not create some volumetric fog and have the lights interact with that?

Quite likely. I find the fog in Lightwave leaves much to be desired (especially when I compare it to real fog). Also, fog is probably faster to do in post than at render time, but I wouldn't know from experience.

The reason I asked because that's what I've been trying to experiment with my scene, trying to add fog to make it look more interesting and/or hide some issues with the model.
What about the light attenuation? If you set that to match real world physics, will this help as well? Mikala - sorry if I'm hijacking your thread!

Very nice.... Here is a little info some may not know.

As a subtle in-joke, Dennis Muren (who had just finished working on Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope) put a small R2-D2 model onto the underside of the mothership. The model of the mothership is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution's Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Annex at Washington Dulles Airport in Chantilly, Virginia.

I think I'll just render out a separate "light" pass and screw around with it in Fusion.
That way I can save a lot of time with the setup.

@Delta I actually spotted the R2 model in one of the shots in the film.

Yes where the woman is going back over the mountain and the Mothership first rises up.

Yes, well the early stages.
Minus beard, scraggly hair and a lot of asymmetry to go.

Thanks.
I think I'll be building an armature and starting a 1/4 Engineer in clay. Should stand at around 3 (a bit under 1 meter) feet tall. I have 50 lbs of KleenKlay just calling out to me.

Seriously though, that's a pretty cool looking character you've got there. Even if he isn't really a musical raisin

My kids were just little then and loved the toys of the "Raisins".
A weekend of celebration here as it is a long weekend celebrating Canada's birthday.
So just a wee bit more.
