They did a new Battlestar Galactica series. I think it's time we either get a re-release of B5 (similarly to Star Trek's TNG Blu-Ray), or a remake, too! I'd watch it!

This looks great!

Just a thought Ted, have you modelled any turrets?

-IF- I ever had access to use the model I'd like to recreate a few battle scenes, or make up my own. Close ups of turrets firing are always dramatic. Of course panoramic flybys are just as cool.

Just askin'

Thanks, Oldcode! My panel texturing may mess it up again, though! I may have to resort to "generic panels" or "B5bighullgrey". Swore I wouldn't but...!

Thanks, Overseer! Most likely to get a re-make. That would be great!

Not specifically modelled the turrets as there are some great ones already modelled, which look good close up! I have them somewhere in my B5 archives. I'll dig them out and see who did them! Fabio's ref images don't show them too clearly unless I'm looking in the wrong place on the superstructure. The Cobra Bay doors open though!

Default Defence Grid Guns!

Hi Rich!
OK. Managed to find the B5 Defence Grid guns by none other than Fabio done initially in 1999 in collaboration with Matthew Tarling. There are 4 files with the four different guns. There is also a later set, version 2 made in 2001. The files contain movement and firing setup scenes.
I downloaded these off the old B5MG site way back! Don't know if they are still available on F3D!
If I knew where on the superstructure each type was situated exactly, I could model in the relevent hatches to open.

You're determined to get my lovely station into a battle!!
Ted

Aside from the big quad-gun next to the communications tower at the front of the spine, none of the guns had definitive postions, probably so they could be wherever the sequence needed them to be. I suppose you could figure out where they were implied to be by the context of the surrounding scenes, and there was a graphic in GROPOS that showed something that may have been the defense grid, but I think you'd have to make up the exact arrangement.

Thanks for that input, David! I have to admit that I didn't even consider doing the Defense Grid as I can't remember it being deployed in B5: TLT. I must watch that again and also the GROPOS episode. Thanks!

I saw Defence Grid models in the Severed Dreams fan made video, but did not find any of these models are available for download. Can you upload your archive in the Resource section? If it is possible of course.

And look here
http://www.foundation3d.com/forums/s...3&postcount=74

Also from Gropos

Trying out some modelling of the hull panelling plates on the reactor cooling panel supports. Looks OK but lots more polys. Is it worth it I wonder?

The LW render status says there are now 3.7million polys! Huh!! Modeller says 870k including 183k sub-patches (pipes). My render time for a 3840x2160 3/9 AA No GI has just gone up from about 1m20s to 2m35s. If I model the panelling on the Chassis/Superstructure/Spine (Take your pick!), that will need a shed load more polys!

Feel free to voice your feelings, folks!

That does look nice. Although Fabio made it slightly different i think.
He gave it more layers of detail somehow.

I made a quick pic for that.

You can see the first layer in the red lines (with a very module shaped and simple pattern) and the second layer in the purple lines (a bit more random to break up the first layer). And then he added even another layer with that very small bits. That way it does look less random i think.

Thanks, Amras, for the feedback! I think thats how mine is except simplified for the sake of poly count.

I started with the basic flat panel (shown in blue) then beveled and inset it down to the green level and then used a shaped template to solid drill the pattern into that lower layer. The pattern is then bevelled up to the pink level. The process of drilling the pattern into a flat poly with lightwave is, however, a b***h. It doesn't play nicely with internal angles of exactly 90 degrees. So it took a long time to track down the bad corners and move the offending vertex down the z-axis (in this case) by 1mm! Over the whole of that part of the model it was a nightmare!

Perfected my panelling on this section. Modified the pattern and reduced the bevel height. I'm going to go with this and see what it looks like on the superstructure.

I liked some of the pre LED versions of those too (70's era)

And there was Marantz, Denon, Rotel, Technics, Sony... among others...

I see the window design of Rotel as the father of some of the SciFi window designs...

Thanks, Mikala.

Latest progress includes the observation windows around the front of the docking sphere and the cobra bay hemisphere. Tweaked the centrifuge texturing and added a bit more to the lighting rig, particularly around the docking port.
