Default The inevitable (Spoilerous) Doctor Who thread

I think the one on LWG was one of if not the largest thread the site ever had

Anyway, Voyage of the Damned trailer is up on the BBC's youtube channel. I for one dislike the forced christmassy-ness of the christmas episodes, though I suppose it's "necessary" in as much as the eps would get shot down by half the audience if they weren't christmassy.

Also, Titanic in space! Very Douglas Adams, not that that's a bad thing. Looks pretty decent to me anyway, not that I needed another reason to watch

Demi-hiatus There will be a couple of specials probably amounting to about 4 eps worth. On the upside that should allow for a larger budget and more care put into those eps.

I think they'll come in at the 'TV movie' style, with subsequent bigger budgets and then tennant will give it up and pass it on to someone else. I hope they get someone who can replace him well. With Rose coming back for some of it it's looking good for the near future.

Lots of rumours that Tennant will be leaving after next year's series... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7145965.stm

Not sure why they'd bother giving him a year off if he's just going to leave.

Old news that I just found:

BANG Showbiz
Nov. 26, 2007 08:25 AM
Tom Cruise is set to star in a special episode of hit British TV show 'Doctor Who'. (My emphasis)

The 'Lions for Lambs' actor is among a host of top US stars, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Madonna, who the BBC are hoping to get on board for three installments of the British sci-fi series to be filmed next year.

An insider told Britain's Daily Star newspaper, "BBC producers know they can't pay these stars what they are used to, but what they can offer is an exciting role in a real cutting-edge show. And the big stars love that kind of kudos."

'Doctor Who' already has a track record of attracting top stars for cameos. This year's Christmas special, 'Voyage of the Damned', will see Kylie Minogue play a waitress at the 1912 launch party for the famously doomed ocean liner Titanic, which sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage.

The three 'Doctor Who' specials will be shot in 2008, but will not hit screens until 2009.

The three episodes are rumored to be the final time actor David Tennant will play the time-travelling Doctor.

It is also believed 25-year-old actress Billie Piper - who quit the show in 2006 to pursue other projects - will return to play his sexy sidekick Rose Tyler.

Re Tom Cruise: I think just threw up a little bit in my mouth...
Re Rose: I miss her, so I feel better.

Someone from across the pond please disprove the first...

Oscaron, that quote says that this is according to the Daily Star.... That alone is all the proof you need that it's made up

And yeh I wasnt that impressed with the xmas episode either. It was doing alright for the first half and then just became stupid in an RTD kind of way as it progressed. Ah well.

Just saw Voyage of the Damned.

Not bad. I agree with Raziel. Started off good, degraded a bit.

I have an urge to model the Starship Titanic just for the heck of it.

Worst scene (along with the mental image it gave me):

Apparently some Christian groups such as Christian Voice have been offended by the above scene as 'it portrays The Doctor as some sort of Messiah'.

I must say that I wholeheartedly disagree. Mind you, I'd love to see the Doctor show up and save our world, but the whole issue smacks of a groups trying to find something to be offended by and wanting to get press for it.

My sense of schlockiness was offended, however. And I sympathize for that alone.

Mr. Copper: So Great Britain is part of Europee, yeah? And just across the Channel is Great France and Great Germany?

The Doctor: No, no. It's just..it's just France and Germany. Only Britain is great.

Mr. Copper: And their all at war with the continent of Ham Erica.

The Doctor: No...WELL...Not yet...(under his breath) You could argue that one.

As a 'Yank', I approve of this snark. It earns one 'Coffee-out-the-Nose' award for hilarity.

BTW, I know it would neuter most of the stories, but The Doctor REALLY needs to get a Remote for his Tardis with Summon Function.

Then again, without it, no-one can hack the security remotely.

I thought it was great. Kylie brought a good emotional tone to it. 'Max in a Box' wasn't the best baddie ever - I'd have preferred a borg type thing - if Banakaffalatta can have a cyborg suit then surely the richer Max can have one too? But with a death laser arm or something. And Tennant still on form as the Doc.

I liked the Poseidon in space story, and the smaller characters still had depth. All in all a good christmas special. Roll on S4 and Torchwood S2

I didn't buy into this Xmas Special. It felt like a lot of previous plotlines all thrown together. My wife and eldest daughter on the other hand loved it and I have to agree Tennant does own the role now. Also I really missed a good companion in this one, bring back Rose.....even.....shudders......martha?....no I can't go that far.....bring back Rose

Just saw the Xmas special. I cannot wait until Davies moves on. That was almost the "End of the World" episode rewritten after having watched the posiedon adventure. Kylie was fine but then I've always had a soft spot for her. I can't stand her singing but she's easy on the eye and actually quite a sweet kid.

As for that abomination of a new theme tune..... my ears are still bleeding.

It's not enough. Rose was built to be an equal companion and until she is replaced or we see the Doctor grow beyond her, she casts a shadow that just can't be filled.

I suspect that she will come back in one of 2 ways. One, the Doctor travels back to 2005 or similar and meets Rose alive again, and somehow manages to say goodbye without her knowing he's the Doctor. Two, she, Mickey and family come back from Pete's World but something has changed. It's 5 years on and Rose is married to Mickey, with child and no longer wants to be a companion.

Either way, they need to cast a companion who is like Rose. Enthusiastic enough to counter the Doctor and down to earth enough to banter with him. I thought Sally Sparrow would be perfect for the role when she was in it. Martha sadly couldn't cut it. She was too weak, and not an actress suited to the role and it was VERY badly written. If the Doctor is written as having doubts about her for all those episodes, then it transfers to the audience. They wrote her to fail.

Donna might fill the shoes nicely with her 'stop bleepin me!' and 'youre stupid'. Just perfect balance for a Timelord - someone who sincerely thinks they are thick and doesn't know what they are doing.

Crook,

Thank you for your reply!

"It's not enough. Rose was built to be an equal companion and until she is replaced or we see the Doctor grow beyond her, she casts a shadow that just can't be filled."

Agreed, it was painfully apparent in the Christmas episode where a makeshift companion was provided.

"Two, she, Mickey and family come back from Pete's World but something has changed."

There are rumors on the net that this happens but I'm yet to see photgraphic evidence of anyone except Billie filming (not that i've looked too hard).

Also looks like we at least know what the "other Timelord" in the next series looks like, whether she is the Rani or not remains to be seen!

RTD seems determined to revist all the popular characters and aliens from the original series, so the Rani seems like a good bet. I still want Davros though. I think this might be the series to bring him back - or if not then one of the 3 specials after that.

Honestly, if I were writing it I'd introduce a larger story arc. I'd bring back the Timelords and the Daleks fully, but have the Timelords blame their erasure swuarely on the Doctor, who is either banished or on the run from them. Something to give him a direction rather than this constant flapping about. Maybe searching for something to bring the timelords back might be a story arc in itself? Something the older audience can lock onto but the kids can bypass and enjoy the weekly story.

Edit: Interestingly, just found this. Probably hogwash, but some aspects seem right, and some aspects of the xmas special were right, so maybe.......

Doctor Who Series 2008 - Season 4
40S. Time Crash. A Children in Need Special starring Peter Davison as the 5th Doctor and David Tennant as the 10th Doctor.
Special by Steven Moffat
Two Tardises crash in the vortex and the 10th Doctor finds himself face to face with the 5th Doctor when he goes to get the driver’s license for the time insurance company.
40X. Voyage of the Damned
The Titanic crashes into the TARDIS just as it is dematerialising. The Doctor finds that time is being manipulated by some spikey aliens called Porgs and he gets the help of a young waitress named Astrid Perth aboard the Titanic. It is about to leave on its maiden voyage so the adventure will probably continue until the ship strikes the iceberg. Hmm. Does this mean that the iceberg was really a space ship or that the invasion of these aliens actually caused the ship to crash? Astrid reveals her true nature at the end of the episode by vwoorping off into space. (Have you worked out the anagram of Astrid yet?)
[Stars Hugh Grant as a Villain and Kylie Minogue as the Doctor’s companion. Kylie Minogue is currently in Cardiff. Filming began in June 2007.]
401. Fires of Vulcan II
193. 220308 by Russell T Davies
Donna Noble encounters an alien emergency in London and there’s only one person she knows of that can help her. But what has ancient Rome got to do with anything? A quick trip to Pompei when Mount Vesuvius is about to explode. Can they save all the people?
402. Mind War
194.290308
Donna and The Doctor visit Agatha Christie, played by Fenella Woolgar, and together they investigate a strange murder.
403. Planet of the Ood (Title in a news report)
195. 050408
A trip to the far future. The Doctor remembers his eighth incarnation and knows that a storm is coming. Something he’d forgotten. Something to do with Davros. Something buried in the bowels of the Ship, Chesterfield. Donna has to deal with some Ood.
404. A Deadly Past
405. Axonite (Part 2)
196. 120408
190408 By Terrance Dicks
Something has taken control of the TARDIS. Something that has been trapped in a timeloop in geostationery orbit above Britain for 30 years. The Axons are back!
406. Sapphire Avenged
197. 260408
Joanna Lumley takes on the role of the Master, while John Simms reprises his role as the Master’s spirit. The Doctor and Donna track the Master down in the year 100 trillion.
407. Shock of the Sontarans
198. 030508
A strange signal is being received from Mars and a retired Brigadier is asked to help decipher it. He calls on the Doctor for the first official meeting of Earth and the Ice Warriors. But there’s another race with time travel capability that doesn’t want this to happen. Maybe Martha Jones can help?
408. Eternal Triangle
409. Destruction of the Daleks
199 100508
170508
Time continues to change. The rupture caused by the Axon, Ice Warriors and Sontarans is starting to pull the Doctor back into the Time War. He knows he destroyed Davros but now he’s back (Played by Ben Kingsley!) And what do the Eternals have to do with things?
More flashback scenes of the 8th Doctor during the timewar, including the moment when Davros kills him. Martha and Donna get on really well in this story!
410. Time War Part 1
411. Time War Part 2
412. Time War Part 3
413. Time War Part 4
200. 240508
310508
070608
140608
It is confirmed that this final story will feature Rose, Mickey, Pete, Jackie, Sarah Jane, Captain Jack, Martha Jones and K9 as well as Donna and the Doctor. It’ll also feature Davros though whether he’ll be played by Ben Kingsley, Patrick Stewart or Terry Molloy is currently unknown. It is likely to feature Sontarans and Daleks in a war as well as other aliens in a final gobsmacking battle.
This would also be story number 200 and worth a celebration in itself.
40X2. The 4 Doctors
201 231108 By Terrance Dicks
Rumoured that an extra special story will be written for the 45th anniversary to be broadcast on the 23rd November 2008 starring Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant with special appearances by other guest actors.
