Default SciFi - 'A place of Dragons and Men'

In the fall of 1969 I got a worn copy of a science fiction magazine and read a short story that made me wish that such a world was real.....Years later I discovered that world had expanded and eagerly sought the books out.....By the time I was in college I had read every book written in that world frame and had just purchased the 'third' book in the series. I was rushing to my dorm room and pelting up a flight of stairs when I ran into a small group of people (literally). I had knocked down a woman and our tumble elicited quite a gasp from the people in the party.....to my chagrin, the Dean and others were looking at me in shock and I was trying to stammer my apologies to the woman, who looked vaguely familiar. As I was retrieving my books the lady was 'tut-tutting' at the host of dignitaries and looking at me with a smile. She pointed to my books and said, "I believe you have my book, young man..." Since she was pointing at my new purchase I shook my head and said, "No, ma'am I just bought this at the bookstore...."Yes, you may have but I wrote it, she replied, and so it is my book, you see." I will never forget the next 18hrs and my meeting with one of my all time favorite authors. Anne McCaffery. So many years later I have been building the world I have enjoyed and these are some of my concepts based upon her stories....Another lonnnng term project.......Tenacious I is.....

I would have loved meeting Anne McCafferey.

Your models would benefit greatly by learning how to use UV maps. That would allow to apply more realistic terrain textures to the models and not get the stretching that we can see currently.

Yeah....but I am trying to get a look that is alien....tortured,...scorched and flowing like lava....I have actually mixed several different UV's and Planar, thrown in some spherical to get a constant churn to the rock......I still have lots of work to do....just started this in the last year.....I found a set of scene files I did on hearing about Anne's death.....if you read the books then you know that one of them is dedicated to the members of the SCA in Fairbanks, Alaska (I ran her down in Wood Center on the UAF campus....). We are all included in that book......

Default Progressions

The original set of scene files I did quite awhile back. When I found them again I started thinking about how I might do a series.....that's when I started messing with the terrain. Going over the descriptions in the books of the surface....How do I depict that.....? How do I create a landscape that ALMOST looks wrong but right....so Rigel can I get some specific critical opinion? Having just said I need to work on UV'ing ain't quite enough fer me...LOL....I am looking to create an almost jarring response of recognition/rejection....Because of copyright this is not Pern but a 'Place of Dragons and Men'....totally alien I have even used lighting that I hope has that jarring in it......

This piece is more than anything why I have cropped back up......beside the fact that I FINALLY have an 'unlimited' bandwidth connection again....
