Default Landscape - Stonehenge, inside the circle

Yesterday I got to visit Stonehenge, and go inside the circle. The weather was wildly variable, and I got repeatedly soaked during the day, but with great good fortune, there was a bit of sunshine at the end of the day, and I was able to get some good shots.

I had not appreciated quite how large some of the stones were, or how tightly grouped the big ones are.

The henge refers to the shallow earthworks around the main stones, not the ring of stones itself. It also also worth noting that there are many ancient burial mounds in the area, and lots of these show up nicely in the low evening light.

A couple of shots have been edited somewhat. I removed signs with cues for audio guides, and also the occasional security guy in a bright yellow jacket.

And some stitched panoramas - this was really useful to get the combination of close up and fitting everything in.

Great photos but it's hard to appreciate the magnitude of this site until you visit it.

Sculpting, forget it without it (unless you aim for very low poly/mapped). I just recently modeled rocky island and i tried wiht LW alone but that was painfull as hell evne wiht drag net, magnet and similar tools. Doesn't look realistic at all so I ended up sculpting and then transfering 2.8 million polys back to modeler and then ran one QuemLoss to optimize at 50% of polycount to get to 1.4 mill and believable results. I didn't have time for retopolgy/Normal map but that would be next step to save on polycount .

The thing to watch out for is that if you just turn up you are kept well outside the main stones.

Various companies organise special tours before and after the main opening times, when about 20 people at a time are allowed into the centre. (The small number of people also helps get photos without ugly tourists blocking the view!)

As Elowan says, you really don't get the scale and grandeur of the place from photos (even mine!)

Nick
